Jay Bilas, Very Gheorghe-y

As Mark noted in the comments the other day, Jay Bilas took the hypocrites at NCAA HQ behind the woodshed earlier in the week, to such a degree that yesterday the NCAA, tail between their legs, fundamentally changed part of their business operation. All because of a Jay Bilas tweet blitzkrieg (tweetkrieg?).

A longtime favorite of G:TB, I took the opportunity to self-promote and tweet at Jay, reminding him (and my limited twitter audience) of Bilas' role in the seminal last 80s action flick "I Come In Peace". Much to my surprise, Jay Bilas tweeted back at me...

Jay Bilas, risin', grindin', oozin' gheorgheness. And now, amazingly, I get to use the "Bilas deserves an Oscar" post label a second time.

  1. Jay Bilas is also a huge fan of Young Jeezy. Most of his first tweets of the day reference lines from Jeezy songs. As someone who counts Jeezy among my favorite hip hop guilty pleasures (I love about 90% of The Recession), I couldn't approve more.

  2. Also, Tallahassee is a dump but my sister lives on the outskirts of town so its not nearly as bad. Country living isn't for me but I'm enjoying sitting on her huge back deck over looking the lake they live on. Looking forward to some cocktails on this deck later today.

  3. The NCAA is supposedly a non-profit. So where were the profits from these sales supposed to go in the first place? That's some shady feces right there.

  4. Why wait? The sun's over the yardarm.

  5. It's all fun and games until an alligator crawls out of the lake and bumrushes your deck.

  6. it is about time for a cocktail. i might have to sneak 1 or 2 during lunch theoretically of course.

  7. Recently had my first Ballast but not the sculpin. The Big Eye IPA. If any indication, I look forward to the sculpin.

  8. Six Point Resin is a badass mofo IPA

  9. doesn't the gtb style manual spell gheorghey as a single, non-hyphenated word? also, who has the copy of the gtb style manual?

    ReplyDelete
  10. danimal, you were jwhs class of '88? you're old.

    ReplyDelete
  11. The unabridged version has it as "gheorghe-y". "Gheorghesgue" and "Gheorghelike" are acceptable ersatz forms of the new revised version's "gheorghey".

  13. Rob. Fuck you.

UNI QLO might make fine clothing but their logo is turrible. They must be paying Shlara's boy oodles to wear that opposite Mercedes. It reminds me of roto rooter.

  14. Rob....please see the fish I caught last week during jbft....old my ass.

  15. Greg: Nonprofits can make profit, but those monies must be directly channeled back into the programs that support the mission. We make profits in most of our lines of business (employing people with disabilities), but those profits directly fund our other programs. This way we don't have to rely on grants and your kind donations, but rather we operate like a business -- one without ownership or shareholders, just the mission of helping individuals with disabilities. There you go.

  16. Jay Bilas vs. Gheorghe Muresan, game of 1x1 to 15 today -- who wins? H-O-R-S-E?

    ReplyDelete
  17. First, having a style manual is not particularly Gheorghe and thus we don't have one. Make it up as you go.

Second, I've said here before that MNDR is a UNIQLO spokescrew so try not to rip on the gear too hard.

  19. The company that employs Whitney employs disabled people.

    ReplyDelete
  20. and they make money off of them. that's fucked up.

    ReplyDelete
  21. How do they make money off of Whitney?

  22. I'm at the mall in Tallahassee that houses the Foot Locker which led to the Free Shoes University (h/t Spurrier) scandal. God bless that Foot Locker.

  23. Danimal--Adam looks incredible in anything. Even UNIQLO

    ReplyDelete
  24. how did i miss "i come in peace"?

    ReplyDelete
  25. I always yell "victory for the forces of democratic freedom," there's nothing peaceful about it.

  26. For those that enjoy the Avett Brothers (not Rootsy), here's a new song to listen to at NPR.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm going to go listen to it now. I'll report back as to whether my tastes have changed.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Nope. Even the arena rock drums and the 90s style electric guitar power chords can't drown out that awful banjo playing.

    ReplyDelete
  29. rootsy is the rare americana hipster elitist

    ReplyDelete
  30. I like the song. I mean, it doesn't have the banjo skill of "The Bear," but what does?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Can a guy who listens to jams from the 1890s be a hipster? I think he's too much of a throwback to be hip.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Aren't all hipsters elitists?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Jaguar Pre-season about to begin...really the best time of year for Jags fans....filled with hope, optimism, and curiousity, none of which will exist beyond game 4 of the regular season.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think Zman is on point. I toil in a musical field much too obscure to ever be a hipster.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well so far the best thing going for this jags game is the Culligan water commercial featuring one of our finer cheerleaders. It must be on a loop.
    Jags Football....Embrace the 3-yard dump-off!

  36. Have seen no stats yet...but 15 passes or so thrown, maybe 20...the overunder on avg length is 4 yards and I crap you negative.
Jags Football...More Shit Right Around the Corner!

  37. seriously, danimal, always thought you were younger than '88. clarence, dave, and i are '88. and we're old. so you must be old.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I would beg to differ Rootsy. Local NYC hipsters relish all types of old-timey stuff like moustache wax, steampunk, and not bathing. I think The New Roanoke Jug Band would be a hit in Brooklyn.

    ReplyDelete
  39. i do believe that marls just offered to be rootsy's manager

    ReplyDelete
  40. Just call me Ian Faith.

    Fuck the Napkin!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yeah, even though Rootsy is in my fraternal family, I'm calling bullshit on being exempt from hipsterness. I will say that Rootsy's pure appreciation for the music of that region/era is to be admired, and it's not an ironic adoration of it, but when purist notions start to make you demean perfectly enjoyable music... you have to take the heat.

    ReplyDelete
  42. when we host gheorghe: the music festival, what acts are involved? other than the new roanoke jug band and greasetruck, obviously.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Action Bronson should be involved.

    ReplyDelete
  44. obviously. this will be an eclectic bill. we'll need to figure out how to avoid a reprise of daytona '92 when mtv thought it wise to mix the ugly kid joe and naughty by nature fanbases in a single mosh pit. got a lot of faith in how much kids have changed since then.

    ReplyDelete
  45. hello, gheorghies. i have a perfect sitting-on-the-couch-friday-night drunk going. gonna put on some rootsy-approved tunes and wallow in my mellow.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I just want to say good luck, we're all counting on you.

    And hi, Gheorghies.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Rob. Oh. Sorry. Yeah, I'm old.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Call bullshit on the hipsterness if you want Clarence - most of the gigs I've played lately are in elementary schools (which are really fun and pay well).

I do love early American roots music, but also love real rock & roll, and a lot of other stuff. I just don't usually like this 'Americana' where the acoustic sounds are augmented by full on rock drums, extra kick drums and super angsty vocals. I say if you wanna rock, put down the damn banjo and just go electric!

Oh, and New Roanoke Jug Band is dead - we tried one reunion a few years ago but it didn't happen. It would have to be Rootstone - we've got some younger guys who could pass more easily than I for hipsters.

    ReplyDelete
  49. possible random idiots reunion at the festival? or will dave defect to the new roanoke jug band?

    ReplyDelete
  50. You guys got after it last night. I was up early with the kid this morning because I'm an above average dad. My reward is going scalloping with the Tallahassee family today.

    ReplyDelete
  51. i'm kinda partial to the old roanoke jug band. i'm a purist.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm a big fan of the Roanoke Jug Band as well, Rob. But with only 4 recorded songs to listen to (and only one with any singing), you kind of have to move on at some point.

And the guys I play with now can do all kinds of stuff, musically speaking. We could get a band together to do Dave's tunes. Who are the Random Idiots?

    ReplyDelete
  53. i believe rootsy just asked clarence to write a 5000-word 'where are they now' piece.

    ReplyDelete
  54. you should live blog your night-into-day odyssey. one man, one dog, one television.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hey Teej, good post. Much better than creepy shark hoochie with the inflatable breasts!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I should also add I'm not opposed to moody acoustic music. I'm listening to Nick Drake right now. About to head to the farmers market and roanoke's freaky spaceship of an art museum. Goddamnit, am I a hipster?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Trip to the farmer's market- or, do you mean microfestivus?

    ReplyDelete
  58. rootsy, any time you'd like to do a guest post on music, we've got a spot for it.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Not dragging the fam to microfestivus lumps, are you?

    Rob, I'll work on that.

  60. I have no idea of where I stand relative to others on the vanguard of pop culture, so I have no idea how well known this video is, but if even one of you is unfamiliar, it's worth it.

This one is in honor of Rob loving Blurred Lines (and is very much NSFW):

  61. I've been in towns named Wakulla, Paneca and Sopchoppy today. The panhandle of Florida is a rural, backward place. And my 1.5 year old definitely did not dig her first boat ride,

  62. Rob's boy Amari Cooper had 4 catches for 182 yards and 3 TDs in Alabama's scrimmage today. He's pretty good.
