Back to the lemon cake

Langhorne Slim has a new album, Be Set Free.

It's practically indistinguishable from his last album which someone named "Rhymenocerous" dropped on us last year. It's good, but nothing new. More lemon cake, if you will.

Although Langhorne Slim isn't putting out red velvet just yet, he is on tour. I saw him last week at the Bell House, my new favorite venue. Tons of free parking, cheap good beer, really cheap good pub food, great performance space and sound system. And two women in their mid-twenties decided to make out halfway through the show while standing next to me. All this in scenic Gowanus.

Slim doesn't look like that picture on his album cover. When I went to get a ticket I asked this little tubby guy if he was in line, and it turns out he was not. He was there to headline the show. He wasn't a jerk about it at all though - he said "No, go ahead" and some superfan told me "That's Langhorne Slim" in the same tone you use when your girlfriend can't figure out which remote to use to change the channel on the cable box. He's babyfaced, about rob's height, on the verge of chubby, and he wears a stupid straw hat. At one point in the show he stripped off his shirt to reveal a white wifebeater. The "wifebeater and a straw hat" isn't a great look, but who am I to judge.

He and his band (the War Eagles) put on a great show. He sounds better live without some of the gimmicky production from his albums - he doesn't sound like he's playing in a root cellar, for example. He obviously loves to perform, and so does his band, an almost entirely acoustic ensemble including an upright bass and a tenor sax. He also loves to interact with the crowd and if you yell at him loud enough he'll yell back. When he came back out after a break and said he was done I yelled "I know you have one more left in you" and he said "We'll see." He started a song, croaked because he was hoarse, and said "I don't think I have one more in me." But of course he did, because it was an encore, and he played about three more songs. At one point I also got the crowd going with "Where Brooklyn at?!" Or at least one random member of the crowd. I never said I was cool.

Anyway, Slim's show is fun and energetic, even if everything starts to sound the same after a while. I went with some friends who aren't really into alt-folk and who knew nothing about Slim, and they had a great time watching him do his thing. So go see Langhorne Slim if you get the chance.

Langhorne Slim is playing NYC again on 11/21 at a place near Washington Square called Le Poisson Rouge.

He'll also be at a new joint in DC called The Rock and Roll Hotel on 11/17. Never heard of the place; it's on 13th & H NE -- Northeast, mind you -- and in the next month or so it's also hosting acts I like such as Liam Finn, stellastarr*, and Elvis Perkins in Dearland.

Before you tune into MNF tonight, you owe it to yourself to peruse Geoff's Top 100 Embarrassments of the Daniel Snyder Era. It's enjoyable for any fan of the sport, but for Skins fans, it's a painful, darkly humorous look at our prolonged annoyance.

Michael Strahan is on TV right now promoting a product called "Vaseline Men". These jokes, they write themselves.

Shlara, heard Simmons on the Junkies this morning as I was driving from the airport to work. I am quite sure that was indeed him you saw the other night. He has some sort of midnight book signing at the ESPN Zone tonight.

He was also about to be on the Mr. Tony show when I pulled into the work garage...

TJ, it totally was him and I'm really mad at myself that I didn't say anything. He was RIGHT next to me for like 30 mins.

And it really sucks b/c I had this grand plan of becoming the second wife--that's never going to happen now...

And you bet I would have introduced myself...and told him he sounds like a muppet on helium when he speaks.

Not sure how widespread this news is, but Leon Washington's broken fibula may be career-ending. It was a multiple fracture of the fibula, the bone was sticking out of his sock and they had to do emergency surgery in California because of the bleeding.

His agent is probably not too psyched that they turned down the Jets' offer of $5 MM guaranteed (and $5 MM in injury insurance) to Leon this preseason. They rolled the dice and played at $535 K salary. Dagger.

Joe Theismann thinks Leon will be fine.

Larry Johnson's tweeting style reminds me of Mickey Avalon's song "My Dick" only he tweets about his dad, not his Johnson.

By the way, it was nice to see David Spade and DirecTV trotting out footage of Chris Farley for their gain. Not many people know this, but Farley was a huge proponent of satellite television before he died.

Spade's face is looking very odd these days. Some sort of botoxed chubbiness making his face look as dead as his soul is for agreeing to co-star with the deceased Chris Farley. I guess Rob Schneider and Jon Heder are too busy to work with him these days.

I saw Mickey Avalon (I got in free) put on a show a few months back at a diver bar here in town. I-nteresting show, to say the least. He was high off his ass, his hypewoman (hypelady?) was even higher and he cut the show off twice to yell at fans. I had a good time but I wouldn't recommend ever paying to see Mickey.

Um, is there any reason the two GTBers who attended Homecoming have failed to mention the halftime "entertainment"?

Fellas, I don't like reading my GTB-related news in the state blurbs of the USA Today (though those blurbs are always awesome...for instance, did you know zombies are attacking people in Iowa?).

So...we going to get a liveblog for tonight's "festivities"? You know Geoff will join in. TJ and I will make rude, semi-impartial comments.

Whit or Rob...make it happen. I'm pretty sure it will be worth the time and (minimal) effort it would take to throw up a new post.

sure thing - stand by

Geoff said...

Yes, to be live blogging with the jokes and the anger and the stuff. Yes.

it'll go live at about 7:30.

I picked the wrong night to stop sniffing glue...and have a lost blackberry.

Mark, I will call you with all my comments and you will transcribe.
