'warren roark nfl' may be a hall of famer.

This post was going up with three terms or thirty terms...it didn't matter once I saw that one.

jim rice made the hall of fame - gotta say i'm a little surprised. pleased, but surprised.

TR said...

I would've taken the Hawk over Rice. Same fearsome reputation, same lone MVP season with ridiculous numbers, but better career numbers. But I'm no voter.

Dawson got screwed b/c his biggest year (1987) was in a homer ball year. And if you think the homer ball theory is crap, you owe me an explanation for Juan Samuel's 34 HRs that year.

T.J. said...

Tom Brunansky's 32 were also absurd.

if tony dungy coached the jets, do you think tomorrow's new york post back page would read: done-gy?

These guys received less than 5% of HOF ballots and will not be on next year's ballot:
Mark Grace
David Cone
Matt Williams
Mo Vaughn
Jay Bell
Jesse Orosco
Ron Gant
Greg Vaughn
Dan Plesac

mark grace should be a first-ballot hofer for bringing 'slumpbuster' to our collective attention.

Late but necessary addition:

"johnny cakes moustache"

Likely steroid us aside, I woulda thunk Matt Williams would've gotten at least 5% votes. The guy put up some big numbers, although they came in the go-go 90's:

378 HRs, 1,218 RBIs, 4 Gold Gloves, 5 All-Star appearances, 1 terrible head of hair.

That pretty much spells doom for Bagwell and Juan Gone, huh?

That Tom Brunansky refernce made me smile. I was a big fan of those late 80's/early 90's Twins teams: Bruno, Puckett, Hrbek, Gaetti, Gladden, etc.

looks like our boy roland burris is gonna be the next senator from illinois. awesome.

Mark said...

Tom Brunasky and Kirby Puckett were the only two members of that '87 Twins team I didn't want to stab in the eye with a rusty needle. Watching the Cards go down to asshats like Kent Hrbek and Frank Viola ruined 4th grade for me.

rob said...

spiced up my senior year of high school a bit, too.

TR said...

Good point, Mark. You had quality guys like Vince Coleman, Andujar and Tommy "perm-mullet" Herr to root for.

Whitney said...

How do you leave that dillhole Jack Clark out of that comment?

Mark said...

I was in 4th grade. Sorry if I wasn't performing thorough background checks, RhymeO. And while Andujar and Coleman were world class assholes, I don't think Tommy Herr needs to be denigrated because he had a fantastic hairdo (for the times).

The Cards also had guys like Ozzie, Danny Cox, John Tudor, Terry Pendleton (before he became overrated) and the immortal Tito Landrum. So, what I'm saying is...fuck off RhymeO. Its my childhood and I'll remember it however I want.

Mark said...

And wow, I never thought about it but Rob's 3 years younger than my oldest sister. She's always seemed sooooo old to me. The fact that I missed her high school graduation because I had an early soccer game that day and needed a nap has a lot to do with that.

You and Whitney are fucking ancient.

rob said...

amen to that, brother. i played hoops yesterday for 2 hours and can barely walk now.

Mark said...

Did TJ ever relay the message to you about me running into Wakefield at the grocery store last week?

Geoff said...

Joe McGrane was on that Cards team as well...and after 9 beers and 9 holes of golf he'll tell you about the sexcapades of his former teammates with a great deal of aplomb.

Greg said...

Rob, who you callin' "boy"?

peckerwood.

T.J. said...

I gave tiny the message.

Mark said...

TJ...your boy Harangody just got destroyed by Earl Clark. Not as good as Flynn on Rosario, but close.

T.J. said...

When Earl Clark remembers he's playing a game he is very very talented.

rob said...

mark, teej did indeed pass the message along. i told him that was good karma for your gators. i was right.

and greg, the atlantic tells me that we're in a post-racial society, so i can say whatever the fuck i want. you honky bastard.

Mark said...

Speaking of a post-racial society, did anybody catch Tracy Morgan's acceptance speech for 30 Rock at the Golden Globes last night?

Pure fucking comedy.

Mark said...

Also, this ND team leaves me conflicted. I hate ND and revel in my ability to hate all things ND. However, I really enjoy this team. Also, if Louisville had any kind of consistent guard play they'd be fantastic. Not sure why Pitino can't recruit guards all the sudden but it sure seems as though thats the case.

rob said...

tracy morgan was unmitigated, unfiltered comic genius. i thought jeff zucker was going to shit himself.

T.J. said...

Big East basketball is fun.

Mark said...

Yeah, the shots of Zucker were priceless.

Mark said...

Those booing hillbillies in Louisville are are aware that there's no way Williams' dunk would've counted, right? For christ's sake, it would've been late AND he took four full steps without a dribble.

zman said...

According to the NY Times, "Of the 539 ballots cast, Henderson notched 511 ...." The HOF should release the names of the 28 schmucks who don't think Ricky Henderson should be in the Hall.

Whitney said...

There are always a few morons who don't vote for the obvious choice just to draw a little attention to themselves. Nolan Ryan was not a unanimous choice. Jayson Stark writes a column today about how mentally defective these people are.
