Gheorghe Salutes George

Though his mild manners and humble bearing might argue against it, one could convincingly argue that George H. W. Bush is a genuine American hero.

Athlete, scholar, fighter pilot, politician, diplomat, and scion, our 41st President has given more to his country than nearly any man or woman, living or dead.

As we've celebrated recently, he's also got a predilection for the the slightly silly. And now, news comes that gives us reason to begin the campaign to honor Bush the Elder with the Legion of Gheorghe, the second-highest honor in all of Gheorghedom. (The first, obviously, being an invitation to become a posting member of the G:TB community.)

As reported in several places, Bush shaved his head this week in support of the two year-old son of one of the members of his protective detail. The youngster, named Patrick, is undergoing chemotherapy to treat leukemia. In fact, Bush's entire detail did the same.

(Note for the record: though I continue to support GHWB's colorful sock movement, I'm not planning to follow his lead here. Marls, however, has already done so. Good man, that Marls. And George Bush.)

Walter White has aged horribly.

Convinced the wife that we should start watching the Bridge, so we turned on the first episode. We made it about 32 minutes in (including commercials) before she threw in the towel, simply stating "there are too many accents". I believe she was channeling Lucille Bluth. I guess we'll just wait for Breaking Bad to come back in a couple of weeks...

Shouldn't the honor be called: "Leghion of Gheorghe"

rob said...

of course it should. duh.

I always thought of myself as more of a Lorenzo Loverman, to be honest.

Bernardo Evil over here.

Mayhugh- I watched the first episode of The Bridge because the series received some really good reviews. It was alright. Didn't love it. I'm going to give a few more episodes a try before I decide its fate on my DVR.

I've been watching Ray Donovan with the hope that something interesting will happen soon. I think I'll give it two more episodes before I start ignoring it.

Buster Bluth is one of the most underrated comedic characters ever.

Agreed TR. He was usually my favorite part of AD.

Mark - I think I'll pick the Bridge up when the wife is reading US Weekly and take it for another spin. Seemed somewhat promising, albeit slowgoing.

I think The Bridge is pretty decent. Of course it might just appeal to me because I'm destined to live in El Paso according to the internet.

Where I'll be called Armando Hazard. Which will sound familiar to Mets fans.

that's an impressively crafted comment. brings the whole room together, like a nice throw pillow.

Lots to get caught up on here. Back on home soil and sitting in O'Hare drinking a $13.00 bloody. Switchin to a straight tito's momentarily. Am with T.R. On the orange and tonic...good'n.
Trip was mostly work but did hang out for a day in Beijing including Tianenmen Square and the Forbidden City. Not surprisingly, you cannot Google the former when there. Fucked up.

I gotta tell ya, after a week without twitter, gtb, and yes facebook not to mention Big Brother, I just don't know what to do with myself.
Rob needs to man up and bring that Zacapa to OBFT.

Frank Ocean name-checked Ayrton Senna in his Chris Brown dis track. I'm impressed.

Clarence, did you make the Wilco, My Morning Jacket and Dylan show VA Beach last night?

And as I get older business trips suck more and more. Duluth isn't bad but it's no China. And four nights away without a car blows.

Can't wait for OBFT.

rob said...

danimal, my local establishment no longer carries the zacapa. i'll overcome this obstacle. also will bring some of loudoun county's own catoctin creek rye. once again, loudoun represent, y'all!

This Weiner is fantabulous.

I thought hard about that show, Squeaks. In an odd twist, there are dueling shows across the Hudson tomorrow afternoon. Wilco/MMJ/Dylan play in a small field in a pier in Hoboken in the afternoon, while Gaslight Anthem plays in lower Manhattan on Pier 26, which juts out into the Hudson just north of the Freedom Tower.

Heart said Dylan, but head says Gaslight. Hoboken is horrendous at organizing anything, and the venue is very much untested. So wife and I will stay in Manhattan and see GA, with earnest punky opener Bouncing Souls.

Two shows in a week is a big deal for me. Reminds me of when I was young. And had choices in life.
