Even a Miracle Needs a Hand*

rob's been here all week (and all season) banging the drum. You've seen the pretty "Team X" comparisons he prepared for us (or maybe you didn't, since he just randomly dumped them in the comments section the other day). FOG:TB MGL made the argument the other day. Seth Davis apparently wasted seconds of his life tweeeting with Squirrel over the Tribe's chances. The Washington Post throws us a bone this morning. And the William and Mary hoopsters' own Sgt. Hulka, Coach Tony Shaver, will be on ESPN Gameday at 12:20 to remind the selection committee one more time to check their board, and make sure the Wrens are included as a 12 seed in the West.

But, come on, all that being said, I think we still realize it would take an honest to god miracle to get William and Mary into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.

*First and foremost, we would need to see if this gentleman is available to assist us in our efforts.

*It probably also wouldn't hurt to get some Mike and the Mechanics on your music player of choice.

*Don't ask this guy for help...he's just gonna send the FBI.

*What are Chris Piper, Milt Newton, Kevin Pritchard and Jeff Gueldner up to? They might be able to help us.

*1947 Edmund Gwenn or 1994 Richard Attenborough might have something up their sleeves.

*Father Guido Sarducci represented himself as an expert on miracles...he's got to be looking for work. (Must say though I was never a huge fan of the schtick)

*Perhaps we can get Jerry Koosman and Mike Eruzione to team up in some sort of Miracle Wonder Twins duo. "Form of...a NCAA bid!"

I'm all out folks...let's just hope the miraculous happens later today.

*I apparently really enjoy this obscure holiday cartoon. Why I do not know.

For what it's worth, our name has yet to be seen on Joe Lunardi's "First Four Out" lists the last few days. I see us battling Seton Hall soon in an NIT game.

Quite an ending to this SEC Champ game...

rob said...

fyi, the nit selection show is at 9. so we can see who the tribe would've played if the committee didn't come to its senses.

TR said...

I wonder if theTribe will get any sentimental pull from the decision makers. Nerd school, Thomas Jefferson's Alma mater, never been there before, etc. Those factors make a more interesting story than a wishy-washy URI team sneaking in.

Is John Wall crying? And is there any way Cousins isn't Derrick Coleman v 2.0?

Dave said...

i have a typical dave post ready to roll-- obtuse topic, associated song, idiotic lyrics.

should i post it tomorrow, or will there be more college basketball mania posts because the selection show is on tonight?

TR said...

Can somebody with spare time on their hands see how Lunardi's final projections line up with the actuals?

Unknown said...

Give me that fillet o fish...gimme that fish! Duke sucks!!! Go Terps!!

TR said...

CBS says the bubble teams are Minny, Illinois, Florida, Utah State, Miss St and VTech. No Wrens on that list. Just reporting the facts.

rob said...

dave, in the unlikely event the tribe sneaks in, we'll probably have lots more to say. failing that, post away.

rob said...

brady quinn's a bronco. no word on kq.

rob said...

jesus, evan turner. same guy.

Shlara said...

Lunardi put Wake as a 12 seed in the East. He sucks

zman said...

The Browns would rather have Delhomme's carcass and Seneca Wallace at QB than Brady Quinn. And they'd rather have Peyton Hillis and a 6th rounder than Quinn. I suspect Quinn doesn't have the chops to be a franchise QB.

rob said...

taking my youngest to a belated birthday dinner this evening. first selection show i've missed in longer than i can remember. bring the tribe home, kids.

Whitney said...

They've only announced the #1 seeds and there are already people saying the Committee screwed up. Good stuff.

d-train said...

UTEP the first bubble team in

d-train said...

murray state - you'd think they were a bubble team that got in based on that reaction.

Shlara said...

Florida??? seriously??

d-train said...

wow, marks' gators....

Shlara said...

oofh. Minnesota taking a spot..

zman said...

LDT is a Jet. I can't wait for TR's rant.

Shlara said...

OMG!!! Wake is in at a NINE seed.
This is outrageous!!!

I didn't realize you folks had started a new post. So, allow me to repost my thoughts from the last comments section.

Sorry to break up the W&M wishing/hoping against hope session but I've had one hell of a day:

- Went to ST game with my old man to watch Stausburg and Wainwright start for their respective teams.

- Had the best seats in the stadium, right next to the Cardinal dugout. I literally could've reached out and touched LaRussa (not that I'd want to) and got to see Strausburg close up for a solid 3 innings. He was as expected, his fastball is sick and his curve had me (and half the crowd in our section) oohing and aahing on a couple occasions.

-Overall, just a beautiful day at the ballpark. Baseball isn't all bad all the time...I guess.

- Got home just in time to see the after effects of my younger dog being attacked by my neighbor's dog. Not pretty. Multiple puncture wounds, pretty bloody and a dog so scared that he threw up twice afterwards.

- Finally got the dog cleaned up, only to turn around and have one of my toilets overflow and (halfway) flood one our bathrooms.

All that, and I haven't even seen the brackets yet.

Mark said...

Sooooo...Florida's in the tourney. Hell...motherfucking...yeah.

d-train said...

todd bozeman coaches morgan state????

d-train said...

so when will neighbor's dog be taking his permanent nap?

Mark said...

Yeah Dan. They were the school to finally show cause and hire him. I think it was 3 years ago now.

As for Florida, they were clearly rewarded for aggressive out of conference scheduling and some decent wins against tourney schools. I'm excited they got in and can make a case for them (as can, seemingly all the guys on ESPN) but I would've had trouble bitching had they not made it.

Mark said...

TBD, Dan. I'm reticent to react thusly right now as my dog poked his head through the fence (wasn't barking or anything, just being curious...and this is according to my neighbors' account) and put himself in harms way and on the other dogs' territory. However, this isn't a done deal just yet.

T.J. said...

Siena-sweet 16. Lock.

Mark said...

TJ just copy and pasted that comment from last year's NCAA tourney bracket thread.

Shlara said...

dammit.
we better get a good seed in the NIT

d-train said...

tribe apparently wasn't even in on the conversation...

T.J. said...

Mark, you are correct I'm sure, but the non-Hummel Purdue is terrible...

Whitney said...

Hold your heads high, Tribesters. You knocked off #4, #7, and #9 seeds this year. CAA getting not much love, and it shows you need to beat the bad teams. Inexcusable losses undid W&M.

Mark said...

Too many bad losses, at least that's what Seth Davis told Rob. The Tribe certainly had enough quality wins to get in, not a high enough profile to overcome those bad losses to UNCW, Towson and such, it seems.

Digger Phelps...eat a dick.

Mark said...

I'm not doubting you Teej. I love Siena quite a bit as well. Just pointing out your consistency.

Who loves Baylor?

I love Baylor.

Jerry said...

Tough day for Mississippi State.

No complaints on the Tribe. Our #s were OK, but it's very difficult to make the case for an at-large bid with some of the losses we have on the resume.

No respect for Cornell.

Mark said...

They did end up with a good matchup against Temple though. Cornell's coach was an asst. for Fran Dunphy. Should give them some type of edge going in.

Mark said...

Is Seth Greenberg going to try and bomb NCAA HQ? Dude's been snubbed (according to him) for 3 years running now.

zman said...

Michael Lewis is married to Tabitha Soren?

Jerry said...

Michael Lewis is married to Tabitha Soren?

rob said...

i hate it when jerry's right. very fun run though - just having even a little hope was very cool.

Jerry said...

Trust me, I wanted to soapbox for the Tribe, but I couldn't do it. Cut out 2 or 3 L's and I think we still would've been on the outside, but we would've had a ton of righteous rage.

zman said...

I can't tell if Jerry thinks like me or is mocking me, but I suspect it's the latter.

rob said...

i know. the towson loss was the dagger.

Milt Newton: Helping to run the Wizards, so he should be familiar with lost causes.

i've never been more excited for an nit selection show. of course, i've never watched one.

bilas with cornell in the elite 8. whoa. billy packer may never speak to him again.

meanwhile, digger has the 1 and 2 seeds in each region.

zoltan - I wrote that at the same time as you. It was weird.

oh, come on. making us wait for the final bracket?

rob said...

northeastern/uconn in the nit. caa represent. or whatever.

rob said...

tribe/carolina! awwwwwwwesome.

Shlara said...

We need a viewing party.
I can't go to Chapel Hill.
Will be a nice game for Shaver to win vs. his alma mater

rob said...

game is at 9:30 on tuesday on espn

Marls said...

VA Tech is a 1 seed and the tribe is a road 5 seed bs north Carolina. This is such bullshit. Good to see that the nit selection committee sucks as much large conference dick as the NCAA committee does. Fucking assclowns. I am suprised that uconn, memphis, va tech, and unc don't just get byes to NYC.

Douchenozzles.

rob said...

fuck yeah. marls goes all william wallace on the nit committee. love it.

Shlara said...

Rob--how did you find that schedule info so fast?? I'm going to be on a train back from NJ until 10am that night--ARGH!

Marls said...

FREEDOM!!!!!

I would paint myself blue but somebody might mistake me for that morbidly obese fuck that heads the nit wHo clearly has a hard-on for the fact that unc is playing in the last iteration of his little event.

rob said...

went to the nit website, shlara.

and i'm too excited about the tribe actually playing in the nit (and too taught by litos and history that the cash money big timers rule the ncaa world) to care that they got shafted.

rob said...

shlara, i suggest you spend one more night in nj and find a comfortable tavern. marls will come down from the city to hang out. painted blue. or green.

Marls said...

Shlara,
If you are lucky, NJ Michael and TR will make it as well. I promise to be slightly inebriated and salty.

zman said...

rob channels his inner Method Man and comes up with C.R.E.A.N(CAA).

What the hell did Michael Lewis say to Tabitha Soren to get the ball rolling? "I wrote Liar's Poker and Moneyball. They're on MTV's required reading list for VJ's, right?"

zman said...

That's the beauty of Marls. There are several different ways to interpret that salty comment, and any of them could be what Marls intended.

TR said...

The Tribe will be on ESPN (and its sister channels) three times (or more) this year. Not too bad.

Can't believe you all didn't know about Michael Lewis and Tabitha. That's old news. They're raising a kid in NOLA.

rob said...

i don't get a lot of method man comparisons, as you might imagine.

zman said...

This is the best 30 for 30 so far. I can't wait for John Starks to open the John Starks School of Elocution.

zman said...

That ending still pisses me off. I was on DeBlasio's couch for that game and his little brother was excited with 18.4 left and I said "it isn't over, they have Reggie Miller" and he was like "You're an idiot, the game is over" and then ...

rob said...

flying to utah on thursday morning. gonna miss the odu/notre dame game. dagger.

rob said...

wow, i didn't remember reggie calling out john starks that directly. that's phenomenal.

Marls said...

Zoltan, the answer on the Salty comment is (D) All of the above.

As for the John Starks school of elocution, it is sister school to the Shaun Kemp school of Contraception and the Charles Oakley school of understated dressing.

zman said...

I'll attend any school where Oakley drops science.

Everyone called out Starks. He's like Nook Laloosh with less talent and a cheaper head.

Marls said...

However, Starks was the best grocery bagger in the greater Saskatoon area.

rob said...

after those three steps, that ball bouncing out was poetic justice.

zman said...

And just like that, all of rob's Shaolin Wu-mojo dissipates like a fart in the wind.
