Barack the President

Near the confluence of the three mighty rivers, a confluence of a different sort, as new President-elect Barack Obama and William and Mary’s own Mike Tomlin share a moment last week. If Obama’s half as successful in Washington over the next few years as Tomlin’s Steelers were on Monday night, we’ll all be smiling.

For my (meager, at least apparently compared to the GTB commentariat) money, the best line of Obama's victory speech last night, "And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn - I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President too."

You didn't come here for politics, so the customary silliness, poop jokes, and YouTubes will resume in short order.

Mark, this is your kind of woman:

FORREST CITY, Ark. (AP) - Police arrested a woman for public intoxication after she reportedly demanded an officer return the can of compressed air she was inhaling "so she could finish getting high."

Officers arrested the 46-year-old woman on Monday after officers received a call about a woman "huffing a can of air" inside a car parked at a Wal-Mart store. Police say the woman was slow to react to questions from officers.

When the officer again asked her what she was doing, he said "she wouldn't say anything except that she wanted her can back so she could finish getting high," according to police.

not for nothing, john mccain's speech last night was pretty great, too.

As a native Pittsburgher and Tribe alum who has been in the tank for Obama since the speech in 2004, this picture is perfection.

teejay - silver lining: the yankees' last 8 championships have occurred with a democrat in the white house.

Sam Wyche getting it done last night too:

PICKENS -- Former NFL coach Sam Wyche defeated Democratic challenger Wesley Burbage for the Pickens County Council District 3 seat Tuesday night.

With all precincts reporting, Wyche received 6,478 votes to 1,639 votes for Burbage.

Sam Wyche won Carl Pickens? I don't understand.

Not Carl, T-Boone.

No, no, not Carl or T-Bone...Slim.

Can we get an update on the pick em contest now that all this nonsense is behind us?

T.J. said...

I believe we went 4-1 last week and the Wheeldome went 1-4.

Wow, Al Davis just cut the guy he gave a 7 yr/$70 mil deal to in the offseason.

DeAngelo Hall, you are the bama of the week week week.

Mark said...

What was the signing bonus and/or guaranteed money on that deal?

big shout out to the good people of alaska, who appear to have elected a convicted felon (and noted enemy of the intertubes) to the senate. nice work, moosefuckers.

I think Hall made $8 mil for 8 games played.

T.J. said...

Did Minnesota elect Stuart Smalley?

Whitney said...

I think he lost by ~600 votes. Apparently they didn't like his work in Trading Places.

As one of the baggage guys? Nice pull Whit.

recount in minny. he's good enough, he's smart enough, and gosh darnit, 49.9% of the people like him.

rob said...

also, props to california for ensuring that they'll waste another $100m in 2010 on a battle that demographics make unwinnable in the long term for the anti-gay marriage team.

zman said...

I also heard Hall made $8MM for 8 games.

If Jesse "The Body" Ventura can be governor in MN, why can't Stuart Smalley be a Senator?

Whitney said...

Rob, seems like you're taking the time to point out two small clouds in your otherwise clear blue sky. Bask in getting what you wanted, brother.

rob said...

yeah, all right. i'm still getting used to this.

rob said...

we'll have mandatory gay marriage for polar bears in our lifetime, though. you can count on that.

Oh, but on the Ted Stevens point, this little morsel had me chuckling. On the Ted Stevens Wikipedia page, under Other Notes, we find this:

"When he is discussing issues that are especially important to him (such as opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling), Stevens wears a necktie with The Incredible Hulk on it to show his seriousness."

Alrighty then.

Geoff said...

Everytime Stevens had to run a hearing, markup or manage a bill on the floor, he wears that tie. I saw him wear it with a seersucker suit once.

rob said...

wait, that's not a wikipedia goof? the tie, she is real?

zman said...

It's true.

You wouldn't like him when he's angry.

Or spending your tax dollars on his new kitchen.
