Gheorghasbord: Science Edition

You know I'm grasping for reasons not to watch the State of the Union when I actually pick up a keyboard and get back at it.

Couple of things from the realm of logic and rationality struck my fancy recently, which is a nice counterpoint from the world of fabulism and insanity we currently live in.

Physics Today asked the question, "What comes after the Large Hadron Collider?" in an article released earlier today. If they'd read this august scientific publication, they'd have known that it would've been funnier to posit "What comes after the Large Hadron Col

Because it's gonna kill us all, and everything.

CERN realllly needs to check the hubris, because it seems the LHC with its 27 km circumference just isn't big enough to sate the atom-smashing bloodlust of the big brains in Switzerland. Didn't they learn anything from Professor Jerry Hathaway's greed? Now CERN wants to build the Future Circular Collider, a 100km megamachine that'll tunnel under Lake Geneva on its way to blazing smoking holes across the quad at Pacific Tech. That seems like a good use of $27 billion.

Would you buy a used spaceship from this man?
On the other hand, if Professor Avi Loeb is right, we may need something to prove to our new alien a scientific journal article suggesting that an extraterrestrial spaceship (or a portion thereof) may well be flying across our solar system.
overlords that we're sufficiently advanced to warrant their friendship. Loeb, the sober-minded chair of Harvard's astronomy department, recently published

The object, named Oumuamua by the Hawaiian astronomers that first identified it in 2017, appears to be very large and very thin, like the sail of an enormous stellar sailboat. And we thought America's Cup technology had gotten out of control.

There's a silver lining in Loeb's telling, and I'm kinda down with it. “It changes your perception on reality, just knowing that we’re not alone. We are fighting on borders, on resources. . . . It would make us feel part of planet Earth as a civilization rather than individual countries voting on Brexit.”

Being part of planet Earth sounds pretty good right now. Sure beats whatever hellscape the 2019 scriptwriters have authored.

Son of VaTech AD heading to the 'Burg to play football. I imagine he will be a contributor in a couple of years either at QB or DB.

We had a few stupid parties back at Unit M, ahem scale party, but I don't recall anyone dressing up in blackface at any of them. What is up with all these VA democrats?

Hoping FOG:TB, TK, not going to show up on the list.

Blackface is a broad term. The Va AG said he was dressing up like Kurtis Blow. Seriously. AJ Scratch. Basketball. The Breaks.

Serious question: is this act egregious?

Look, dressing up like Little Black Sambo or a classic racist image and/or standing next to a Klansman is bullshit. Dressing as an African-American person in any manner intended to be a mockery is bullshit. But I used to date a girl who once dressed as Prince years ago and she fucking loved Prince and she nailed the outfit and was apparently a hit at the party not because it was degrading towards him or any African-American but because it was an all-out glorious tribute. Should she be fired? I dare say she'd never do it again after all this.

Willing to listen...

These are the breaks...

None in my day either. I think Northam should be out just for the stupid "my wife tells me it would not be an appropriate time to moonwalk" response.

He should moonwalk on back the Eastern Shore, where blackface is possibly still acceptable to some folks.

zman said...

Does Virginia have a western shore?

rootsminer said...

No, just some old ass mountains over to the west. Eastern Shore refers to the landmass that's east of the Chesapeake Bay.

I've spent some time on Va's Eastern Shore. I've heard of, though never met, folks whose families have been there forever who retain the old dialect of their forefathers.

Whit - I’m not sure painting yourself black has ever been “OK”. Given the history of minstrel shows, I think it’s been a loaded act for a long time. You can put together a really good Michael Jackson costume without painting your face black. I think even back in the 90’s that would have been over the line - which is probably why I can’t recall anybody doing it.

On the other hand, I remember Pip painting his face red, wearing a redskins jersey and a coat hanger around his neck and claiming he was a coat hanger abortion.

TR said...

I’m not sure we want him as our moral compass.

Pip is making Long Island great again.

Wiz really giving it 100% tonight, in the wake of the Otto Porter trade. They held the Bucks to only 50 in the 1st quarter.

Virginia. Virginia. If there is a silver lining it will be in the expedition of women running the world.

True Detective is binge worthy too btw.

Excellent prior post on music/vinyl. I’d like to hang out with Dave.

Seeing Joe Jackson at The Lincoln sat. I’m old so I’ve forgotten what I’ve said, but Body and Soul is fantastically engineered and produced. Spinning it currently following Look Sharp and I’m the Man. Pairing well with Aslin and Veil. Cheers.
