This seems like appropriate filler...

...given yesterday's afternoon conversation in the post below.

Now we do the dance of joy.

We recently received the following video submission requesting a spot on our editorial staff. It was accompanied by a note that said "Give me a call coach. I live for this."

This mosque debate is one of life's little IQ tests...and most people on my side of the political aisle are failing it miserably. Depressing.

rob said...

that's okay, most people on my side are too scared of their own shadow to make a coherent argument on the topic.

T.J. said...

The Tea Party "movement" is a laughable joke, and Glenn Beck is their Carrot Top.

Geoff said...

There is also an arguably coherent (though still wrong) argument to be made in opposition to building at that site, but no one has successfully made it. Instead its a bunch of scared people (70% of Americans per most polls) who are unable/unwilling/too unsophisticated to differentiate Muslims from Muslim extremists. 70% of Americans probably do not know a Muslim.

Sorry--this is not a gheorghe-esque topic, but the coverage is unavoidable and its pissing me off.

The concepts behind the tea party movement are intrinsically fundamental American values. The people who are leading it and in large part participating in it are batshit crazy.

Maybe I'm failing the IQ test, but ... doesn't it seem improper to put any sort of religious building near ground zero? The folks who died there were of many different faiths, or of no faith at all, so it just seems inappropriate for any one religion to establish something there. Religion shouldn't factor into the place at all.

Am I wrong?

T.J. said...

Zman, it is TWO blocks from Ground Zero, point #1. And honestly, are you gonna make me go copy and paste the freedom of religion part of our Constitution?

And before we all get in a big pissing match, read this:

And after reading that...try not to be one of them.

this really isn't gheorghe. what in god's heaven, or allah's, is going on?
i'm with z-dawg...sorry, call me a ruh-tard. i'm okay with a compromise however with a variety of places of worship avail - jewish, catholic, muslim - whatever floats your boat. but one, and muslim...negative ghost rider, that pattern is full

I guess I see it like this: Constitutionally/legally, they unquestionably have a right to build there. So they absolutely should be allowed to build there...and if we are going to prohibit them from doing so, then let's just bag the whole freedom of religion facade.

That said, I think their motives for choosing to build at this location are questionable at best. Some have argued that the mosque builders were completely blindsided by the controversy. If that's the case, they are either criminally ignorant or criminally stupid.

As to zman's point, I see what you are saying about any religious building there, but there would be no controversy if a christian church was being built there. Furthermore, this mosque is proposed to be built not on the ground zero site, but merely withing several blocks of it. I'll hazzard a guess there is already a christian church equally as close to ground zero.

Trust me d-train, this is not what I expected to deal with this afternoon...the Teej is the least likely to engage in this kind of talk...ever.

But the damn tea partiers are in DC pissing me off.

T.J. said...

Zman, I apologize, I didn't read your whole comment. You are correct, religion SHOULDN'T factor in at all.

But we don't live in a smart, Utopian society. So this whole "argument/debate" has boiled down to some nasty unnecessary shit.

This is the first time Geoff and I have been in agreement in this century.

On a semi-related topic, Libertarians unavoidably give me their testimonial in bars. Seriously, it's 4 times now. It's as if I am wearing a T-shirt that says, "Please Expound Upon Laissez Faire for Me."

I usually go along, neither fully endorsing nor denying many of their priniciples. I can appreciate more than most the ineptitude of our government and why many folks would want less of it.

But the last guy was a dandy, extreme and humorless . . . When I asked him how he expected his roads to be repaired, he explained that all Americans roads should be privatized with tolls. When I asked him about public education, he slammed his hand down on the bar and excitedly explained that all public education should be halted immediately, and that education was a privilege worth paying for.

I asked him whether he'd completed the construction of his moated fortress on top of the mountain and recruited his henchmen to fend off the starving, stupid masses. Then I left.

I am familiar with the Constitution. It just seems inappropriate for people to worship in a place where so many died. It's an unnecessary can of worms. I don't care what type of church or temple or mosque is proposed. The site should be religiously neutral.

T.J. said...

Jesus Zoltan, they didn't build a fucking mosque around the wrangled steel of Tower 2.

Geoff said...

Z, I see your point, and I appreciate it. I just disagree. If they were putting a tribute to Allah on the ground zero site, I'd oppose it...but a mosque a couple blocks away and around the corner, while inconvenient and probably insensitive, must be permitted. I guess the debate has been more upsetting to me than has the actual issue being debated. Its been a buffet of ignorance, lack of sophistication and manipulation of fear for political gain by all involved.

Geoff said...

Choosing to be a libertarian says two things to me about a person: they have no interest in constructive debate and they are intellectually lazy.

Sorry for hijacking gheorghe for my own personal venting. Can we return to Mark's topic of "The first women of color I ever jacked it to?" I'm pretty sure mine was Lark Voorhies.

I'm on vacation just got a deep tissue massage, no happy ending, and everyone is napping but me. So I thought why check out G:TB for some levity.

Picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue.

And the reason for the massage: I swam, biked and ran my way through a half ironman on Sunday and I can barely walk. That was 6 hours and 22 minutes I will never get back.

Now back on topic, let them build it the 'cultural center'. There are numerous mosques and churches closer to ground zero.
