NCAA Failure, Again

The NCAA's passive-aggressive stance towards the State of South Carolina and its stars-and-bars state flag is a well-documented and tiresome story. This weekend, I delved a bit deeper into the issue and found that, as usual, the NCAA's enforcement mechanisms are misguided and mistargeted.

Instead of focusing on a minor kerfuffle like a state flag that bespeaks the casual racism of a region, the NCAA should be spending its legal fees on a far more egregious and outrageous offense. To wit, the picture below details an actual restaurant in Cherry Grove, SC - hard by the Atlantic Ocean and just thisfar from 1964:

Heritage, not hate, people. That's the line, right?

Do they make the grits from scratch or are they instant grits?

You're trying to tell me some of these Nats were on the juice and they still suck this much?

Great burgers and sandwiches?

Tar before baby = offensive. Tar before heel = inspiring. Got it.

We are not very far off from a world where I can filter in and out the news I want to hear on my respective magic boxes (computer/tv), and when that day comes, I will be filtering out all steroids stories. I don't care.

T.J. said...

Once you've developed said product, can you send me the version with the Mike Vick filter?

Geoff said...

Yep. I'd like to hear more about Mike Vick once he is returning to the playing field. Until then, pass.

jerome said...

and the Brett Favre filter.

T.J. said...

Geoff, looks like you better get the boys in R&D working doubletime.

Geoff said...

Ok, so we don't want to hear about Favre, Vick and steroids. Agreed. So, since that constitutes everything ESPN covers outside of highlights, its begs the questions "Then what should they cover?" How about focusing in greater depth on "on the field" occurrences? Oh, right, here's where ESPN tells me that no one wants to hear about that stuff.

Geoff said...

While we're bitching about TWWL, this headline from their front page is fun:

Tests show Nowitzki woman pregnantAh yes, the Nowitzki woman...who we found was formerly the Tony Banks woman.

T.J. said...

As a baseball fan, I luckily can lean on the MLB Network now for actual highlights and analysis, and avoid the humongous clusterfuck that is the Baseball Tonight crew (especially when Winfield or Vina are involved).

jerome said...

ESPN is to sports as MTV is to music videos.

Mark said...

So much to comment on:

- Tar Baby's? Really? Even Clayton Bixby is offended by that.

- And I too want to hear nothing about Favre, Vick or steroids (unless its an NBA HGH scandal...that would be fun, for a whiel at least)but will gladly watch and entire E:60 or "Outside The Lines" dedicated to the entire crazy Nowtizki girlfriend/fiancee story.

- Champions League Final is one this afternoon and I have a work event to attend. So...who's live blogging this thing? I mean, it was such a damn hit last year...

Mark said...

I see Golf Packages welcome...that is a bit over the top. Even in the south.

I don't understand how any value is obtained from baseball highlights (let alone the games) aside from finding out who won. All of the highlights blend together: Strike out, throw out, double play, HR, HR, manager thrown out by the ump, strike out, semi-difficult catch in the outfield, HR.

Shlara said...

With the Nowitzki story in the headlines, I thought it would be appropriate to revist this list:

Whitney said...

Mayhugh, how is that different from any sport? Why have highlight recaps for any sport? Just provide a list of who won and we can get on with our lives already!

Geoff said...

What Whitney forgets is that baseball is boring and dumb. I believe that is Mayhugh's point.

Jerry said...

Everybody's complaining about something.

Geoff said...

Here's a mildly interesting stat:

The Redskins are so average, in fact, that they are distinctively mediocre. Since 1995 every NFL team has either lost 12 or more games in a season or has won 12 or more at least once. Every team, that is, with the exception of the Redskins.

Whitney said...

You won't find me saying that people who don't like baseball are stupid. I just think their IQ rating is significantly lower.

Geoff said...

I also generally subscribe to the thinking that people with opinions contrary to mine are dumb.

TR said...

Congrats, gents. Your banter has succesfully amused me during my first duece-drop at the new job. My poop, like the discussion, was lively, yet inconsistent. And fudgy.

Whitney said...

We've discussed a lot of condiment choices here. The Washington Post has a condiment article up today here.

T.J. said...

Complaining is the new complacency.

Mark said...

So...nobody's live blogging the Champions League Final? We need to get Greg working for us, stat.

Geoff said...

Rezvan live blogging his bowel movements wasn't good enough for you Mark?

Mark said...

Also, I like this "mayhugh" character. He hates Kobe, thinks baseball is boring and he's got a great name.

Mark said...

A nice appetizer sure, but no not enough.

Geoff said...

Okay, I'll live blog it. There have been a bunch of backward passes and people falling down feigning injuries. A guy with an accent is commentating along with another guy with a stronger accent. No one is scoring.

Mark said...

Game hasn't started yet, Geoff. Good work though.

Geoff said...

Thanks for pulling back the veil there professor. I had everyone going until you blew it.

zman said...

"hard by the Atlantic Ocean" sounds like a fratty beach week story, not a description of some racist bumpkin waffle house.

No, no you didn't.

Referring to soccer players as gladiators is probably a bit much, no?

Mark, that says "LITE MENU," not "little menu." Score 1 for the Florida educational system.

Mark said...

Whitney -- I have no idea what you're talking about...

rob said...

i just arrived in scenic cape may, new jersey. i'll liveblog, you effers.

1-0 barca 13 minutes in. i missed the goal, so look it up.

42 comments on a midweek post. you guys must really love pancakes.

and geoff's conflation of tar heel and tar baby is a cry for help.

rob said...

pique gets a yellow for a flagrant takedown of ronaldo. even that divey bitch couldn't oversell it.

rob said...

giggs hits the resulting freebie over the top by just a bit.

rob said...

messi ripped one just high in the run of play, then ronaldo missed low and wide a minute later. end to end action early.

the barca goal was from eto'o in the 10th minute.

Geoff said...

Rob...I'm sure its alluring to someone of your stature, but get off the high horse.

Whitney said...

Mark, we need to give you a higher level of privilege so you can revise history cleanly. It's fun. You can see why Holocaust deniers get such kicks.

rob said...

touched a nerve, i see. i'll be more sensitive in the future.

and xavi nearly touched the post with a free kick in the 27th minute.

Geoff said...

Yes, I'm all hot and bothered...but you're a tough little monkey and you'll live to fight another day.

Geoff said...

Back to the soccer. Did Muccie pass it to Prego? Did Arriago or Arriago 2 put one in the mixer? Pray tell...whats happening...

rob said...

some finger-wagging, a bit of mouthiness, a missed opportunity. a lot like pi lam on a saturday night at the moment.

Mark said...

Question: Is Geoff comprised more of gayness or xenophobia?

T.J. said...

Soccer sucks.

Mark said...

TJ blows.

T.J. said...

Your point?

rob said...

sick run by messi, squeezing through a space more closed than teejay's mind to test van der saar on a cross.

rob said...

barca lead 1-0 at the break and have had most of the play in the first half.

T.J. said...

I like everyone: geeks, sportos, motorheads, dweebs, dorks, sluts, buttheads...they're all righteous people.

Mark said...

Messi's run was great. Too bad nobody came with him. And, honestly, does anybody believe that John Kruk can do even a single one-handed pull up? Could he...ever?

rob said...

van der sar robs thierry henry at point blank range. that may cost the 'spaniards'.

rob said...

messi dragged down in the area as he slid to finish a nifty eto'o cross? no call.

rob said...

man u look lost this half. barca's gonna get one soon.

rob said...

xavi off the post on a free kick from 19m. whoa. man u on the ropes.

rob said...

in case you were wondering, wayne rooney still looks like he'd be more comfortable wearing doc martens and stomping immigrants.

rob said...

cross from the right just eludes park's leaping attempt. insert short joke.

Mark said...

AWL. Rob got me there.

Mark said...

Not with the short joke but the Wayne Rooney joke...

rob said...

nice little breakout for man u, but rooney can't elevate the cross. corner from giggs just too high for vidic. that's what passes for opportunity for man u right now.

rob said...

rob said...

another inconsequential corner for man u.

rob said...

messi! goal!

rob said...

messi snuck in unmarked behind the man u defense, potted a header. definitely not van der sar's fault.

Mark said...

Messi's should never score on header in the box. He's like Rob's size.

rob said...

tommy smyth said the same thing. minus the rob reference. he's been excoriating the man u defense.

Mark said...

My viewing has been somewhat limited but, from what I can tell, Man U has been dominated thus far.

rob said...

ronaldo with a yellow for a frustration-related shoulder charge.

rob said...

dead on, mark. barca has owned this game.

rob said...

paul scholes with a dirty, dirty tackle.

rob said...

brilliant piece of work by barca nearly yields a third goal - undone by a sloppy final touch by a euro whose name escaped me.

rob said...

sorry, it was puyol. he's been terrific all over the field.

rob said...

berbatov blows another man u opportunity on a corner. appeared to head it off his own shoulder and over the net. that's about right for man u tonight.

rob said...

extra time and man u really don't look like they've got anything.

rob said...

and ballgame. 2-0 barca. a thorough ass-kicking. vidic with a hard foul on messi in the closing seconds, just because he could.

zman said...

I'm convinced rob will watch anything as long as 2 or more people are competing at something. Soccer, horse racing, tiddlywinks, anything.

Mark said...

Yeah, soccer's on the same level as tiddlywinks, no doubt.

Mark said...

Um, who's the guy at the end of the platform that none of the Man U players will shake hands with?

rob said...

zoltan's wrong about tiddlywinks, but not about me.

Geoff said...

Mark's right about me...gayest, foreigner hating-est guy in town. That is in regards to those from other nations and not the band.

T.J. said...

The Birdman and Guile from Street Fighter are the same guy, right?

T.J. said...

Geoffrey, Michael and I all took the over...make a fucking shot please.

T.J. said...

Cristobal Huet is absurd.

T.J. said...

I hate the McDonald's "McCafe" campaign even more then the "Dollar Menuaire" billshit.

TR said...

I just finished the Man U game on TiVo. A terrible effort all in all by them. Vidic appears to have been bribed to lose the game for them. He and his East Europe swarth got schooled on the first goal. He then inexplicably avoided blocking a direct kick on a set piece, allowing the shot to come in and hit the post. I bet his family received a score of goats in exchange for his futility.

And Ronaldo sure played like a guy who can't wait to get that Man U jersey off. The announcers were dead on about that. He probably wants to move to Madrid to have a new town of whores to cavort with.

TR said...

FYI - Yanks winning, Sox losing, Jays lost. If that holds, the Yanks and Sox will be tied for first. Tex is now hitting over .275 and A-Rod over .260.

When you factor in the return of Posada this weekend and the return of Nady (allowing the faltering Swisher to get less ABs), this Yankee squad is starting to look a bit frisky, albeit with a former Mexican League pitcher as our most reliable reliever not named Mariano Rivera.

KQ said...

is magic wearing craig sager's tie from last night?

T.J. said...

If so, it has fake aids.

zman said...

Eastern European swarth kicks ass.

rob said...

tr, i think we're in for an interesting campaign. sox, yanks, and a lot of other squads are good with serious flaws. postseason crapshoot may start early this year.

rob said...

and, um, where the fuck was billups throwing that pass?

T.J. said...

Make Every Shot!

rob said...

nba basketball, it's ugly as fuck.

rob said...

michael rapaport and zac efron rooting for the lakers. i'm now really torn. as is teejay.

hey rob - earlier this evening my friends' second grader played the role of "big scary squirrel" in the highly underrated musical called "nuts."

T.J. said...

KQ, comment of the year.

alternate nickname suggestion for birdman: learn to use the square, man.

i can't disagree with teej - that's a quality comment from kq. and i love that play.

um, which team?
