Like Crash Davis Said

Never fuck with a streak. For previews of Team America's second World Cup opponent, the Green Dragons of Slovenia, we recommend the work of Jerry's Wheelhouse or our very own Zman. Unless, of course, you'd like to learn anything about the Slovenians.

  1. this morning's washington post compares slovenia to new jersey. i think that's an omen, but i've yet to divine its meaning.

  2. many of the summiteers will be gathering at the dubliner to watch landon and the boys this morning. alas, i will not be in their number.

  3. very little, i'm sure.

to recap the summit in short form, it involved a lot more lionel ritchie than i expected, mark's tattoos are many and he makes it a habit of wearing pants after dark, shlara joined us and wore a bemused look for most of the time, greg ordered fried pickles, mark's friend mike was remarkably restrained as teejay called him 'the other guy' repeatedly, and - as expected - i left well before any real damage was done. good to finally meet mark and his friends, good to see greg again, not bad to see teejay.

we're planning the next one for new orleans next spring. mark your calendars.

  8. Summit was quite enjoyable. Rob's shorter than me (which is nice), TJ is as I remember him and Shlara was quite gracious in putting up with our jackassery. Good times. A very nice preview of what awaits in New Orleans next spring.

  9. I think I commented one time that my Slovenian co-worker says that this Slovenian squad plays Slovenian school football instead of Yugoslav school football. I must have looked confused because then he said that he meant soccer, not football, and then we were on the same page. This apparently means Slovenia plays much more of a team game than in the past, which was focused on making individuals look great. Think maybe four corners instead of isolation? Anyway, their goalie is the best guy on the team and everyone is young and hungry for contracts with teams in big-time leagues (none of which I've ever heard of).

  10. i'm obviously biased, but our national anthem kicks ass

    ReplyDelete
  11. dempsey was worried about getting booked there

  12. Our national anthem is no cakewalk to sing, paving the way for renditions like Carl Lewis's and Enrico Pollazo's.

La Marseillaise -- best anthem, wasted on a bunch of effete dinks, but very strong.

  15. Nice marking. And Sh*t. We look like crap.

  16. I agree Rob. Way too much time and space. Gooch has to close out quicker.

  17. we're just whacking the ball around without purpose. dislike.

  18. Wow. We just made five passes in a row. Hot damn.

  19. findley looks entirely useless thus far

  20. So far it appears that the team with the most zmen wins. Kinda like how the team with the most Buffalo Bills loses the Super Bowl. That's why the French couldn't lose when they had Zenidine Zidane. He had the strength of two zmen.

  21. 80,000 slovenians in cleveland? subversive bastards.

  22. i like the slovenian homage to charlie brown in their uniform design

  23. Those Slovenia t-shirts the fans are wearing are fucking atrocious.

  28. Well that's what happens when you mark men like the three blind mice.

  29. i just attempted to reverse-jinx the result. you'll see it one way or another at 12:44.

  30. too much room in the midfield, boys

    ReplyDelete
  31. the officiating won't cost us the match, but this gentleman has been poor to quite poor

    ReplyDelete
  32. wow, gomez for gooch. all the stops, out.

    ReplyDelete
  33. what a play by altidore to get that ball down

    ReplyDelete
  34. and the double post is the shrapnel

    ReplyDelete
  35. I wish we could put Gooch back in there. Feeling very nervous about our back line right now.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Without a point today, we're toast.

    ReplyDelete
  37. This match needs more yellows and more flaky foul calls.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I can't believe I can't see this...radio isn't sufficicent

    ReplyDelete
  39. Offsides. And that was bullshit. The Dubliner is electric right now.

And Rob, the officiating may have cost us this match.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I wonder what percentage of Howard's freak-outs are due to his Tourette's.

    ReplyDelete
  41. was just thinking that, mark

    ReplyDelete
  42. I feel like Mark is guest-hosting with the Teej live from the Dubliner. I may lose my radio gig.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Lt Daniels from The Wire should stick to his day job as a policeman. Terrible officiating job by him.

  44. I'm filling for you while I'm in DC, Z. And if you're up for a second show today, I'll fill in for TJ when me and my merry band arrive in NYC tonight.

  45. If my addition is correct, I think the US might be in trouble if England beats Algeria and ties Slovenia and the US beats Algeria. That would mean three teams have 5 points each.

What we really need is for England to beat Slovenia next week. It would also help if Algeria beat England today, but I don't see that happening.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Pretty sure that if we beat Algeria by 2 or more then we advance even in the worst case scenario in the two other remaining games occurs.

  47. According to Grant Wahl, this was only the 5th time in World Cup history that a team came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to earn a draw.
