It's been a cow's age since an April Fool's joke really hit home for me. Might have been as long ago as 1982, when Jimmy Damron showed up for pregame warmups for the Alabama state championship soccer game with a walking boot on his foot. Jimmy was one of our best players, and we were fucked without him. He took the boot off to much amusement. We lost in a shootout. Good one, though, Jimmy.
So we won't be trying to pull any of that nonsense on a crowd as discerning at this one. Instead, we'll celebrate some stuff about fools.
Like the Stone Roses song Fool's Gold. Classic late 80s/early 90s British Madchester alterna-dance. I won this CD from the campus radio station at W&M. It's not exactly a banger, but it's got a funky vibe and you can nod your head to it.
Richard Russo is my favorite author. And Nobody's Fool is the first book of his that was turned into a film. It starred Paul Newman as Donald "Sully" Sullivan, a charming idler/hustler living in an upstate New York town modeled after Russo's home of Ballston Spa. Bruce Willis is terrific in a supporting role as Sully's frequent antagonist, and Melanie Griffith is phenomenal as Willis' wife and Sully's mutual sorta-crush. And all's well that ends well - Sully walks out of the book's final pages flush with cash and with a new dog to boot.
Heads up, this video has a brief NSFW moment towards the end that's universal in its depiction of a woman's ability to render the coolest fella a blushing dope:
In many ways, the movie's about the redemptive power of friendship and family ties, as this scene near the end with Sully and his pal Rub shows us. Don't need to know the whole movie to catch the emotional power here.
Is anybody out there? Fa-fa-fa foooolin':
Fool me once, friends. What've you got to add to the list?
Well, there's the premier episode of Yacht Rock, entitled "What a Fool Believes," if anyone still... still hasn't watched it.
There was a period of years early on in the World Wide Web when we had a mailing list called the LammieNet. Some of yous likely participated. Annoying habit of mine was sending out announcements every April 1 that "Dave called me last night and he's now engaged to Catherine. Wedding date TBD. Let's wish him well." When clearly he was fighting against that end tooth and nail, despite it being the best result imaginable in his life. And every year someone would go along with it. Dumb fun. Foolish.
- Everybody Plays the Fool by the Main Ingredient (featuring Cuba Gooding SENIOR) - Chain of Fools - Aretha - Fool in the Rain - LZ - Foolish Heart - GD - Foolish Beat - Debbie Gibson - Fooled Around and Fell in Love -Elvin Bishop, blues guitarist extraordinaire - Fool for the City - Foghat - Only a Fool Would Say That - Steely Dan - Ship of Fools - GD, Robert Plant, and World Party - CSI theme song
i have broken bread with skunk baxter on more than one occasion. true story. and he says the yacht rock guys have it right. that last part might not be true.
A high school friend lived in Aspen for 5-6 years after college. He also said Oates, whose primary residence was in Aspen, was a major league a-hole. Acted like he was better than everyone and pissed off all the locals.
so did whitney actually get engaged to catherine? "nobody's fool" was an english department favorite when i started teaching-- love that book.
TR, can you recommend a keto book or outline what it is exactly. i listened to mark scission on joe rogan and i kind of want to try something-- i need to shed a few pounds . . .
if you participated in the NYT mini-- like a real man!-- then you'd know know that not only am i alive, but i'm dumber than ever.
get on the leaderboard gheorghies, so you can lose to zman every day like me . . . i also occasionally lose to whit and stacey. every once in a while, i win and think things are going to change-- but they never do. coffee is for closers.
Dave, I just read The Case for Keto by Gary Taubes. It was surprisingly good. Somewhat related, I just ate a block of cheese and half a kabanos, which is a Polish version of Slim Jim. I feel no guilt.
I did the mini on my phone today and sometimes it gets a little glitchy. Today was one of those glitchy days, hence my slow time. I will do it on my desktop tomorrow.
Rogan’s podcast w/ Nina Teicholz (#1058) is a good primer on the evils of sugar and the sugar industry. Not sure how much she touches on the evils of seed oils there, but the awfulness of those, and their relative newness in the American diet, is a big story.
That recent Sisson pod w/ Rogan was good. His foods are very good, IMO. I use his avocado oil-based Ranch dressing on my keto salad.
ok, good tips. i listened to the mark sisson episode, which got me thinking i need to try some of this. i think if i could cut down on refined sugars, processed carbs, and some of those seed oils that would be huge . . . i managed it for a day and then drank too much tequila last night at pub night and ate a bunch of ice cream with sprinkles when i got home. typical.
I've had good luck shedding pounds with Whole30, a 30 day program where you cut out grains, sugars, dairy and legumes, then gradually reintroduce them one at a time. The first time I lost almost 30 lbs in a month and learned I don't tolerate dairy very well.
Since them I've done it again with some modifications(booze on the weekends, some legumes, etc) and it's a pretty dependable way to drop weight. The sugar seems to be the main thing, but I'll have to look into the seed oils, as I like the high smoke point and neutral flavor of grapeseed oil.
our man weenie (who showed up in the texts of several gheorghies last night in a very random and very weenie way) met gaetz on the first day of congressional freshman orientation when ween was chief of staff for tom garrett. i won't tell the story he told me about gaetz, because it's not mine to tell, but let's say it's in keeping with what we continue to learn about gaetz's character. or lack thereof.
Another book, Why We Get Sick, does a good job of showing the link between insulin insensitivity and disease. The low carb, high fat diets like Whole 30, Atkins. etc. reduce sugars and increase insulin sensitivity, which in turn helps your body to burn fat and not store it.
They also probably work because people eliminate foods that they over-consume, like bread, chips, cookies, and (sigh) beer.
It takes a bit of time for people to get their insulin levels under control, at which point you can probably introduce new foods in moderation without too many negative consequences.
My understanding is that fasting's impact on insulin sensitivity is the same.
Family and I are on Day 2 of a three-day stop in Chapel Hill on our way to Hilton Head for Spring Break. Weather turned frigid on us (high of 49 today), but it’s been fun. UNC Chapel Hill’s campus is great, and their Main Street (Franklin) is great. We trekked to Durham today. Duke’s campus is even nicer. And downtown Durham is cool. It’s an old industrial town that is reinventing itself. Lots of old buildings have been freshly painted and repurposed. Feels like a tiny Austin. We found a cool cafe w/ heat lamps on the patio that allowed dogs.
I have had two prior trips to this area:
1) Making a spontaneous road trip w/ Derek, Zman and Ian to buy fake IDs in Durham, and
2) Making a rugby road trip to UNC as a pledge. Brady and I had a preposterously fun night, considering we were two 18 y/o kids w/o any fake IDs. Same couldn’t be said for a blotto Shem, who we stuffed in the backseat of somebody’s car before dark.
Ahhh yes, good old "Laminated Photo IDs" in Durham. I think I hipped you guys to the place. I came to school with a Pennsylvania special that eventually got taken. I 'moved to Louisiana' on my next visit to LPID's.

I never broke bread near skunk baxter, but I did break wind near Walter Mondale once. True story.
Rob - did you discuss music or missile defense strategies?
I never saw Lynyrd Skynyrd but I sure saw Molly Hatchet.
cybersecurity, juan. and what kind of an asshole john oates was.
Was? Has he been rehabilitated?
Sorry, TR. It's as worthy as those others.
And the CvB oversight was also egregious.
"Washington Nationals' Opening Day game vs. New York Mets postponed due to COVID-19 issues"
Sweet.
...although it was a better result than this one and many others.

dave's alive!
Dave, you gave me Nobody's Fool as a groomsman gift. Excellent book.

i just downloaded the mini. it might be addictive.
oh yeah . . . first thing i do every morning (actually, i do it in synchronously with the first thing i do every morning)
today is typical. i did ok. 47 seconds. whit got 33-a good score-- and zman got 23. he's an asshole.
i'm struggling with the mechanics a bit. but i did get 33 seconds for tuesday.
Hey, little buddy, get in the game. Competition isn't intense, except for Dave's rants.

Taubes also wrote Good Calories, Bad Calories which is also excellent.

Surprised Whitney missed Fools in Love
Much like Andre the Giant, Matt Gaetz has a (spur) posse:
