Gheorghasbord: What the Kids are Doing

Odds and ends, as usual, inspired by a couple of things I heard from my kids this week.

We have a family friend who attends the College of William & Mary. She's a freshman this year, and she loves it in the Burg. She's a perfect fit: earnest, smart, dorky in a good way. Just a neat kid. My 17 year-old came to me a few days ago and asked, "What did you call the Sunken Garden when you were in college?"

Puzzled, I responded, "The Sunken Garden. Why?"

"Because Tiernan called it Sunky G's on Insta."

"Get the fuck out of here. Sunky G's?"

"Yep. Sunky G's."

And as it turns out, kids at W&M have been calling it that since at least 2015, according to a Google search. I weep for the youth. It's no Tinee Penis, that's for certain.

That same 17 year-old texted our family thread this morning at around 8:00. In and of itself, that's an amazing fact, as she is never awake before 8:30 when she's rousted into surly half-consciousness by whichever parent has girded their loins to face her. The text itself was a doozy:

"taylor swift killed prince phillip"

and we were off.

So I guess we've at least got to listen to the music.

Sunky G's, man. Shaking my damn head.

I used to love rolling through the Sunky G's on my way over to the Crim Deezy. W & M is a hip, hip school man.

Your description of W&M is apt —our oldest fits that and fortunately has it has a choice. Yay! His choices are it, UVA, VCU, and George Wash. in DC. He got waitlisted at Univ of Chicago, so there’s that, too, maybe. But it’s mega bucks! That’s what’s going on around here as this weird school year heads toward its end.

A friend of ours is from New Orleans and went back to visit his folks over his kid’s spring break. He purchased 100 lbs of crawfish at that time. It was delivered this week and he’s having a huge crawfish boil this afternoon. And he ordered a keg of Pernicious from Wicked Weed. To say I’m excited about my Saturday is a drastic understatement.

When I was a kid the Sunken Gardens' bushes were much bigger. Did the boxwoods die? I'll let someone else knock those set ups out of the park.

Has anyone tried Nando's peri-peri chicken? I want to try it but they aren't around here yet. Hopefully they don't put Pollo Rico out of business.

had pollo rico two night ago. that shit is dope.

I’m not familiar with pollo rico but pollo tropical is an extremely high level fast food joint if you’re ever in south Florida.

A good roast chicken is so choice. Our local earth fare sells em for $5 each on Monday nights. I’m usually down to take a shortcut for a Monday night dinner.

During all the extra time at home in the past year, my 15 year old has been watching cooking videos and fancying himself a culinary day wizard of sorts. I bought 3 lbs of ground wagyu at Sam’s club last week, and he thinks he’s a burger savant now.

Pollo Rico is a delicious Peruvian rotisserie chicken spot in Arlington across from George Mason law school. When I was there they had a $4.99 special: quarter chicken, two sides and a can of Inca cola. I was broker than broke and this bargain helped sustain me. Unfortunately it gave me violent diarrhea once every six times I went but it was worth it.

They have all the chickens roasting in plain sight on spinning skewers along one wall. Two guys are always taking chickens down and quartering them with a machete at 100 MPH. They are chicken ninjas. Back when I was a regular there was one guy who had six fingers--the sixth was a fully-formed extra pinkie that seemed to just flop around on the side of his hand. I have no idea how he didn't cut it off with his speedy swordsmanship. I always wondered if I would get a free meal if I found a finger mixed in with my fries.

And of course I referred to it as Pollo Loco. For those of you who live near me now, it's a much much grimier version of La Rosa (which I also call Pollo Loco).

sunky g's sounds like a rotisserie chicken spot, not a piece of colonoal landscaping

our family is headed to the movies! first time since the pandemic started. godzilla vs kong. i'm very excited. kong: skull island was awesome so this one is going to be twice as awesome (because it's got twice the number of giant monsters).

Who do we root for in Kong vs Godzilla? Mammal over reptile?

It’s rainy as hell here today. I’ve got the Masters on and a weed delivery in route. I also have to go to my sisters house for her daughter’s birthday and I’ve never wanted to do anything less.

Matsuyama’s ASICS golf shoes are dope.

ASICS Gel Resolution 6 was the best tennis shoe ever, from the standpoint of actually playing tennis. There was no need to make any changes but they had to come out with a 7 and an 8.
