Nearly 3 million people have been lost to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Global economies have been disrupted, many industries have been hammered, and the state of the world is, even as we crawl out of this morass with vaccinations, fraught with uneasiness and anxiety.
But we will be fine.
Except . . . wait, what??
"Hogs have been in short supply since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic more than a year ago. Now analysts are predicting higher prices and a short supply of pork for foods like hot dogs and bacon as restaurants re-open and summer barbecues resume as vaccinations in the US pick up pace."
Apparently America's "pent-up demand for meat" will have trouble being met due to "lower production last year and higher disease losses." In case you didn't know, "the number of market hogs, piglets, and future piglets, dropped 1.8%, 1.4% and 2.5%, respectively." Damn the future piglets, I always say.
What does it mean?
- higher prices on these meats
- fewer discounts
- more people stocking up
- people bargain hunting
- barbecuing being impacted
- people being sad
- people starting to be vegetarian
- no, not really
Also, I got my vaccination shots at/courtesy of Smithfield Foods. Coincidence?

as a hypothetical vegetarian (which i am) this is very good news. but i should warn the pigs that they should beware of reality-dave, because he will eat you.
hypothetical dave doesn't drive his car through amber lights, nor does he text and drive.
he's also quite good at the nyt mini
Although today was not his finest effort.
I’m not a Nuggets fan per se but I do really like the makeup of that team and was excited to see them possibly take the next step in the upcoming playoffs. They had as good a chance as anyone to come out of the West. I say had because that’s not happening without a healthy Jamal Murray. A terrible injury for a really fun and ascending player.
Bean dog?
Happy 70th birthday to Peabo Bryson
Pea Dog!
I have eaten ham every day since Easter. I thought cooking a whole country ham was going to leave too much left over and would go to waste. I did have too much left over but it has not gone to waste yet. I will continue eating.
How long does it take hot dogs to expire? I would guess longer than the pandemic, which means we could have a hot dog surplus when this is all over. Did anyone check? This post seems like more of the same social media scaremongering that Marls decried earlier.
According to your USDA:
KNOWLEDGE ARTICLE
Packaged hot dogs can be stored in the refrigerator 2 weeks before opening. After opening a package of hot dogs you can keep them for a week in the refrigerator (40 °F/4.4 °C or less). These meats can also be frozen for 1 to 2 months for best quality. Frozen foods are safe indefinitely. See also our fact sheet on Hot Dogs and Food Safety.
Now ya know.
20 years after their most recent release, The Connells sent fans a note today. They didn't want to inundate everyone with data, apparently.
"New album coming later this year. Follow along.

We should have a party where we eat hot dogs. Mrs. Morgan will bring her beans.
hypothetical dave drinks tequila with seltzer and lime. low carbs. actual dave is drinking a fiddlehead ipa.
These are the Daves I know, I know
I enjoy when rock writers neither fawn nor pointlessly self-aggrandize by taking down something popular. I enjoy when they take down a piece of utter musical excrement.
