This Week in Tigerball: Quinn to Win

When last we saw Quinn McDowell, W&M's do-everything small forward was closing out his terrific collegiate career in disappointing fashion, scoring 6 points in the Tribe's 57-49 first-round CAA Tournament loss to Northeastern. The loss ended a desultory 6-26 campaign, not exactly the valedictory McDowell might've hoped for or deserved.

If his first 18 professional games are any indication, he's gotten over it.

The 6th-leading scorer in W&M history, McDowell suits up now for the Willetton Tigers in Western Australia's State Basketball League. The Tigers are solidly ensconced in the middle of the SBL table at 10-8, but McDowell's one of the league's premier players. He averages 28.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists on 47.5% shooting. He's second in the SBL in scoring and three-point percentage (43.4%), and leads the league in total points and free throws made.

McDowell tallied a season and career-high 42 in a 112-105 road loss to the Wanneroo Wolves (who feature former ODU guard Trian Iliadis), and scored 34 with 15 boards in a 95-90 home win over the East Perth Eagles.

The SBL is a second-tier league, with players aspiring to Australia's top division. Our Aussie sources are bullish on the young American's character and commitment, so we're hoping to hear good news from down under. Until then, tune in here for your stateside SBL news.

(If you've got some time and want to watch an entire basketball game filmed via fisheye lens, the Willetton/Wanneroo game is available in full below. McDowell opens the scoring at 1:22 - you'll recognize the little hop as he gets set for the pure three-pointer.)

Is Sedale Threat still playing professionally in Australia? Just say yes.

A second tier league? Come on.

rob said...

but actually, no. he's 52 years old.

I eagerly await danimal's 3,000 word opus on the impact of JMU hoopsters around the world.

So, if 4 people leave a bar after drinking, but only 3 arrive home, and the 4th is found dead the next day....how many years in prison will Aaron Hernandez serve?

Mark said...

So the Aaron Hernandez murder thing is weed related? Oh man, this keeps getting worse. And dumber.

Mark said...

I hate word problems, TJ.

T.J. said...

so does Aaron Hernandez

Danimal said...

weed and murder just don't mix. don't smoke & kill, people. and definitely don't smoke & kill people.
well at least he didn't have a bright future that he (potentially/likely) threw away.

It will be interesting to find out more but this thing is starting to sound like Hernandez going back to New England (and close to those he grew up around) was the worst possible thing for him. There were always whispers at Florida that he had an undesirable group of friends from back home who often came to visit. I'm guessing these are some of those same guys. And that they were on his payroll, so to speak, once he got to the NFL and moved close to home.

Danimal said...

besides the dead guy, the other bad thing about this is i had him as one of my likely early tight-end picks for ffl this year. what a dick.

T.J. said...

Interwebz now say Hernandez is going to get arrested in conjunction with the murder.

Danimal said...

talk of tebow as tight-end turns to shouts.......now

zman said...

The storyline that cops are tracing routes between Dorcester and North Attleboro and asking the public to help look for the cover of a rear-view mirror are preposterous. Go look at a map.

And Hernandez's lawyer is named Fee. Can't make this stuff up.

T.J. said...

....Aaron Hernandez is currently driving around in a white vehicle as cops look to arrest him for murder?

This sounds vaguely familiar.

Danimal said...

not to hernandez.

Mark said...

I'm not sure why the news has a helicopter following Hernandez. He's going to the practice facility for treatment. BREAKING.

Danimal said...

I heard he was wearing a pair of bruno magli's

Marls said...

Michael K Fee is a partner in the Boston office of Ropes & Gray. He specializes in white collar criminal cases and SEC investigations, not the murder of a friend dumped in an industrial park. Look to me that the Pats retained Fee for him. I doubt that this guy will be representing by the end of the week.

zman said...

A lawyer named Fee is like a proctologist named Assman.

let the rhombus begin.

Now there are reports that the reports of Hernandez's imminent arrest are 'absolutely untrue'. Hmmm.

I know this conversation happened 5 days ago...but still want to chime in.

I love Vampire Weekend--totally in the tank for their preppy, poppy, high-brow style. And kinda am annoyed at myself for liking them.

It's my "go to" Pandora music station.

And the "Diane Young" song from Vampires in the City is delightful.

Joe Torre did not do a great job getting orthodonture for his kids.

new tidbits on hernandez: he had three (3) rental cars registerd to his name at the time. the cell phone he turned over was destroyed. and his security system, apparently with video - also destroyed.

Mark said...

Those all seem like totally normal things to do. Nothing to see here.

Danimal said...

as i check the tweet feed, i discover i'm oh, 2 hours behind on the "new tidbits". silly me.

To Mark's point from this morning RE: worst thing for the athlete was returning to Boston and his homies, wasn't that the identical scenario for Chris Herren?

Mark said...

Different issues but yes, Herren's addiction popped back up/got worse when he ended up back near home in his second season.

rob said...

i like the spurs tonight - think they're just better

I know it's not the exact date, but it's been 19 years since the Knicks lost to the Rockets in Game 7. Easily my worst sports fan moment. Game 7s in the finals always make me think of that awful game.

wow the amazing jump on this pic.

mayhugh said...

Battier and Anderson are the x and y factors right now.

Mark said...

To TR's Finals flashback point. The NBA Finals always remind me of Nick Anderson's Game 1 0-4 at the FT line choke job against Houston. Bad, bad memories.

TR said...

Refs are swallowing their whistles tonight. I like it.

I don't understand why they don't do to Duncan every time.

do = go

If you aren't cheering for Duncan to win this thing, you don't have a heart.

Duncan will regret those two misses forever.

That is just heart-breaking
He can't believe it himself

I'm glad everyone is into that new White Stripes song.

twitter just reminded me that Rashard Lewis is on the Heat roster. This just makes me mad, he stole our money when he was on the Wizards roster

Shlara said...

Tim Duncan's presser was BRUTAL
Poor guy...

Mark said...

I feel as bad for Tim Duncan as I ever have for a pro athlete. He was a beast in games 6&7. And he'll be what iffing in those games for the rest of his life. He looked and sounded gutted last night.

Mark said...

And Dave, that was a great game. No almost about it. Not as great as Game 6 but one of the best NBA Finals Game 7s ever.
