Science, for Any Occasion

The Tampa Bay Lightning currently trail the Boston Bruins by one point in the NHL's Eastern Conference. But they lead the known sporting world in the dropping of science.

Unbeknownst to me, and a majority of Americans, the Lightning ushered in a new era of in-arena excellence back in 2011 when they installed a Tesla Coil goal signal/all-purpose internal lightning machine. Witness (at the 0:55 mark, or so):

Nikola Tesla was an indifferent skater, but he could light the lamp, boys and girls. Kudos to the 'ning for the shoutout, and for us for figuring it out five years later.

I worked for the Lightning as my first job out of grad school. ''Twas the year the NHL went on strike though so my time in Tampa was short lived.

dance competition *and* gymnastics meet today. long periods of inactivity followed by 90-second bursts of action. that's a metaphor for something, but i just can't put my finger on it.

Tee-ball equipment pick-up -> rec basketball -> travel soccer game 35 mins away -> lunch at a mundane Panera in Wayne, NJ -> travel soccer game.

That's been my scintillating day. I feel your pain. I'm fighting the urge to start diving into the beer fridge now.

Pottery painting with the kid. Almost done. Meeting Vitas for beers shortly. I'm parched.

spring break travel plans fell through, so we're looking for last minute ideas. preferably somewhere warm. go.

Not sure when your trip is, but Hilton Head is awesome. We are returning for a third straight time this summer.

If your Spring Break is the week of 4/11 (as ours is), you might get great weather. Hilton Head is as far south as central Georgia.

Savannah is an hour away and Charleston is 90 mins away.

Heading to Savannah on Tues and unfortunately leaving in Wed, short of St. Patrick's. If you get down that way Roberto please advise. I'm sure your family would love for me to crash one eve.

Am sipping on a Macallan 12. It's fine but nothing special. Last weekend after drinking too many craft beers I raided my buddy's cabinet. He had an unopened bottle of Laguvilin. To the sniffer It was smokey and oaky as any scotch ever. The trip down the gullet was something different. From here on out when buying for myself, that will be the one.

HH gets my strongest white. The wife and I have already discussed retiring there as snowbirds from October thru April in ~20 yrs.

You can rent bikes and have a blast trekking around. There are fun family-friendly fishing options as well. My boys held a baby shark last summer.

Tennis and golf are huge around the island. Many condos are in complexes that offer access to these activities.

And here's a must-visit restaurant in HH: http://www.hhbackyard.com

Salty Dog and Crazy Crab are also tourist staples.

Hit me up if you want info on specific areas.

Last suggestion from me on this topic, Rob: if you want 100% chance of beach weather, fly to Ft Myers and stay on Captiva or Sanibel Island. Warm water, tons of sea shells, chill vibe. And the Twins have spring training nearby.

Even though I'm staunchly in the east coast of Florida camp (no waves in the Gulf), I can endorse TR's Sanibel/Captiva rec. Beautiful, very chill and relatively underdeveloped.

It's a shame the Dodgers don't train in Vero Beach anymore because I'd recommend that too.

marcus got 20 last night for the red claws. turbocharged octopus had a tougher go tonight, but still had 4 boards, 3 assists, and 3 steals. his first two nba games saw him start for the injured mike conley. thrown into the deep end, for sure.

Speaking of Spring Training, I'm going to Cardinals-Nationals tomorrow. Temps forecasted in the 80s. Lovely.

teejay needs some nationals socks. see what you can do.

I'll check it out. It's more likely I'll buy myself a Brevard County Manatees hat,

Rob, you could come on down to the First Coast. Set up base camp near St. Augustine/Vilano Beach. Lots of stuff within a 60 mile radius not to mention great beach. A manageable drive from nova considering your kids aren't mine. St. Aug is a pretty good town with a lot to teach. Solid zoo up in Jax, Guana river for kayak rentals yada yada. And the best for last, I live here. Our Spring Break is the same week and are not going anywhere. In other words, lots of babysitting cash sitting on the table and it has ur name on it.
