If Derrick Rose were any other player in the NBA (other than Kevin Durant), he'd be getting absolutely annihilated in the media for sitting out right now. He's been cleared to play for something like 6 weeks. He's practicing with the team. And he's sitting on the bench in the playoffs. Meanwhile Joakim Noah can barely run and he's on the court gutting it out.
Yet somehow Rose remains virtually critic-free and remarkably still gets phrases like "the ultimate competitor" used to describe him despite his actions being a ton closer to Andrew Bynum than his teammate who's on the court in significant pain. If just about any other big-time player (again, except Durant) tried to pull this, they'd be getting killed: LeBron, Dwight, Gasol, pre-title Dirk, Westbrook, anybody in NY, BOS, or PHI...
I suppose he gets the favorable treatment because he's "humble" as evidenced by the fact that he never speaks and may actually not be capable of speaking.
I haven't seen a full-blown rip job. There's been some nibbling around the edges, although generally couched in the "ultimate competitor" language. There's definitely some white space for an enterprising muckraker.
To answer Dave's question from the last post re: the sorority letter. Yes, I've read it. Along with millions of others. It was on Deadspin. Tiny little website, not sure if you've heard of it.
And excuse my shitty attitude, I came down with the stomach flu for the second time in a month yesterday.
And I agree on Rose, I think part of the kid gloves treatment he's getting has a lot to do with him being from Chicago. Everybody in the city has loved him since he was a junior in high school and I think many in the media are afraid to call him because of this.
From the last post. There was a bar called 'The Library' in my hometown. Which was down the street from the real library. It closed before I could check out any liquid books.
mark, what's your take on revis from a bucs fan perspective. seems pretty low-risk on the one hand, but if he plays well, there's a 100% chance he tries to get a new deal with guaranteed money.
McLain certainly isn't a good guy but reports are that he was arrested most recently for yelling "Fuck the Police". That, is bullshit.
As for Revis, if he's healthy he makes the Bucs defense significantly better. They were absolutely awful last year. I'm not jazzed about giving up this years first round pick though. Was hoping they could hold out and give up next years first round pick. But, he's a proven malcontent when it comes to salary which worries me greatly. So, I'm good with it. For now.

was just thinking the same thing - totally agree.
have there been any rip jobs of Rose by the local Chicago press corps? I have to imagine one is coming, if I didn't already miss it
C'mon Z. You gotta get your face right down in the hole. Teej rode it better.

Teej is the ultimate competitor. Zman relies on internal combustion.
Ginuwine's Ride the Pony Express
Absolutely ridiculous 14 year old basketball player. And the name to match: Seventh Woods

And just to make us feel old, he was born in 1998.
