Bummer about The Possum - what a voice. My jug band mates and I put a country band together and were just working on 'She Thinks I Still Care' last night.

i posted the latest "hi gheorghies" last night! beat out clarence!

i assume you've all seen the kid-friendly yoututbe clip "how animals eat their food"?

We're a little behind the curve down here in SEVA. Life is slow here. Been busy this morning catching up on some sort of skirmish in the New England area.

A USA Today mock draft has W&M CB BW Webb going at #59 to the Pats.

I'll give you a minute to process all those initials. Ready now?

What makes this column interesting is that it was written by W&M's own Nate Davis, Class of '96. Many of you may remember him as Tom B's buddy. He was a fellow ROTC guy who did his stint as an officer and then followed his passion for sportswriting. He was an all-around good dude. He didn't even hold a grudge when I wrote "I Love Balls" on his cheek with permanent marker after he attended Golf Party one year and passed out.

I have no idea how legit his call of a W&M guy in Round 2 is. If he included him there just to give the Griffins a shout-out, that's pretty awesome too. Ebirt og.

In a bar named Barcadia in NOLA that is likely TJ's wet dream. Nothing but old school video games and pinball machines.

Mark said...

They've also played nothing but 80s music. Queen, The police, etc.

Jerry said...

And everyone's wearing 10 year old XXL t-shirts.

zman said...

I would expect TJ's wet dream to involve Jim Boeheim.

Nate gave an all-time great best-man speech at Tom's wedding so I'm not surprised that he's an accopmlished writer. A very good guy indeed.

rob said...

bw webb in round two is very legit. mayock loves him.

Jerry said...

Tag team Hell in a Cell match: Jim Boeheim and Bill Parcells vs. Rex Ryan and Don Zimmer with The Rock as the special guest referee.

TR said...

I forgot about that speech! He somehow tied in U of Miami football to Tom B, which was funny b/c Tom didn't give a shite about sports.

Rolling Stone is making lists of the best music venues in America. They categorized them, and the most recent one they did was "big rooms." My hometown music joint is #16, Mark should visit #7 this weekend, and DC folks will enjoy #1. Full list here.

T.J. said...

I had B.W. Webb pegged as a third rounder in my limited pre-draft work.

I would like to be at this bar Mark is boozing in/playing video games in

T.J. said...

if it's the same Nate Davis (and I think it is), he's a regular weekend contributor on Al Galdi's fantasy sports radio show on 980AM here in DC

T.J. said...

and, tying it all together, Al Galdi would love Jerry's wrestling analogy

TR said...

I have been to 4 of those 20 places. Disagree on Toad's, but agree with Beacon, Radio City and Wiltern. Sadly, I missed Troc, 930 Club and Webster Hall back in my glory days. Back when I had choices. My wife lives when I use that sentence. Makes her feel warm and cozy.

Bowery Ballroom may be too small for this list, but it's the best live music venue in NYC.

zman said...

EJ Manuel! It really isn't a dream.

T.J. said...

you still reading "Word Up" magazine?

Greg said...

T-bone steak, cheese eggs & Welch's Grape

rob said...

930 really is a great venue. we're lucky to have it here. increasingly, the neighborhood around it is becoming a great bar/food district, too. very good times.

zman said...

Putting' 5 carrots in my baby girl's ear.

Clarence said...

TR, the Bowery Ballroom was on a different list in the same series. The smallest sized places. They are working their way up to stadia.

I believe Marls was at Webster Hall last week.

zman said...

Wearing a fishnet shirt and spiked dog collar. Whither the Middle East?

Dave said...

i want to go to barcadia.

rob said...

was jammin java on the other list? 'cause it's jammin, and all.

Mark said...

Cool list. I've been to Fox Theatre in Atlanta and plan to go to Tipitina's this weekend.

Barcadia was really cool. Amazing food too. About to go see Gary Clark Jr and Band of Horses play (not together) at the fairgrounds.

rootsminer said...

Mark, Terry Reid is playing at One Eyed Jacks in NOLA tonight. I was there last week and got all excited til I saw I had the wrong Friday.

Story is that Terry Reid could have been the lead singer for Zeppelin, but he was under contract for his solo career so he hooked them up with Robert Plant.

Marls said...

There is a place called Barcade in Brooklyn. Same gig. Much closer to Dave's house.

Marls said...

Second TR's strongest white for Bowery Ballroom

Clarence said...

Mark, I know you have Whitney's Playbook for NOLA, and I also know that you could do exactly none of what he recommends and still have a brilliant time. Glutton for punishment: keep us posted on where you go and what you eat/drink/see/hear just for fun.

rootsminer said...

There's so much to eat/drink/see/hear in New Orleans it's astounding.

I'll also personally vouch for Three Muses on Frenchmen Street, AND Gal Holiday and The Honky Tonk Revue, who play there Saturday Night. Caught them at Circle Bar last sat.

For if there's nothing going on at Jazz Fest besides Billy Joel. Though I suspect they'll give you another option than BJ.

rob said...

geeeeeeeeno!

Mark said...

One of the best things about Jazz Fest is it winds up around 7:30-8 each day which leaves plenty of time for evening revelry.

Saw a band named La Vent du Nord this afternoon. French Canadian folk band. Not my normal style but really, really good. Loved them.

Mark said...

The guys from Band of Horses have some god awful tattoos.

zman said...

Bills go QB/WR then take an ILB with a rating tha is more than 10 points lower than everyone taken before and after him. This is so painful.

Mark said...

I like Robert Woods, actually. And Eddie Lacey to the Packers seems somewhat unfair.

zman said...

Woods appears to be good. Too bad he can't stop the run.

zman said...

Dude's name is Christine?

zman said...

I loved Menelik Watson on Soundbombing.

Danimal said...

Honey badger the 69th pick. Smoke up Johnny!

Mark said...

Soundbombing I or II?

Clarence said...

Mark, I'm torn between telling you that you desperately need to get to Igors between 3-5am and worrying that without loud, drunken idiots like me in tow it may be a letdown. At least consider it.

And Rock 'n' Bowl.

zman said...

The Bills drafted a WR who had 299 receiving yards last year.

Dave said...

hi gheorghies! two late nights in a row! hello cleveland!

Mark said...

Hi Gheorghies!

Called it an early one tonight, Clarence but looking forward to trying to hit Igors late tomorrow. May need an early evening nap after an afternoon at Jazz Fest to make it happen.

Clarence said...

Hi Mark!

TR said...

Mark - it's hard to go wrong down there unless you black out on hand grenades early and pass out.

My recommendation for any early/mid evening downtime (ie, before the midnight/later night shows) is to walk all the way down Bourbon (past the nonsense and thru the gay section) to Frenchman Street. Great little scene there with cool bars and amazing musicians. Some have covers, some don't, but they are fun.

Very jealous.

rob said...

bonerama at 2:00 on gentilly, followed by dumpstaphunk (at the same time as both allen toussaint and rebirth - that's a no-lose scenario). then cool it down with andrew bird at 5:40 on the fais do do. there you go, mark.

dammit, we really need to do a gtb summit in new orleans.

Mark said...

Bonerama and Rebirth Brass Band are on my list today.

Mark said...

Just ate at Butcher. Holy shit that's good. Pancetta Mac & Cheese and Duck Pastrami sliders. I'm going back.

zman said...

BW Webb is a Cowboy.

Marls said...

Why does a Saints fan care about the Cowboys? On the other hand, if he had gone to the Panthers or the Falcons, I could see how that would make it hard to root for him.

rob said...

cowboy hate is transferable, marls.

Clarence said...

Well played, Marls.

And it is not cool. I'm conflicted.

Mark, you like Jordan Reed?

Mark said...

I like Jordan Reed. Recruited to UF as a QB and played some as a freshman. Only made full time transition to TE the past two years. Super athletic, good hands and still learning the position. Improved greatly over the past year. Not a great blocker at this point but a matchup nightmare as a receiver. Should be very dangerous split out against safeties and LBs from day one. Nice fit with RGIII.

rob said...

ran a 10k this morning, then folded laundry for 3 hours. i'll let you guess which was more grueling.

rootsminer said...

3 hours of folding laundry must have been more grueling, Rob. Don't you have kids?

Clarence said...

There's no way the clothing in Rob's family's laundry basket should take 3 hours to fold. My daughters can clean up their Polly Pocket clothes in 10 minutes, and that's roughly the same size stuff. Come on.

Marls said...

Good Night Gheorghies. I'm old.

rob said...

my house looked like an episode of hoarders, and my wife and kids have waaaay too many articles of clothing. wife is out of town, so i got a wild hair up my ass and went on a folding binge. might clean the garage tomorrow.

Shlara said...

So, Kevin Durant

Mark said...

I've been drinking since about 10 am. I'm not exactly drunk and not exactly sober. The wife is passed out after a big Mexican dinner and I'm out in the French Quarter by myself. This could get ugly.

Mark said...

Chandler Parsons is pretty underrated these days.

rob said...

hi mark! also, gheorghies!

zman said...

Hey ladies.

zman said...

Hi Gheorghies.

Clarence said...

Hey Z.

Mark said...

I fully endorse Robs GTB NOLA Summit idea.

rootsminer said...

Rob must be in the doghouse if his wife is out of town and he spent three hours folding laundry AFTER a 10K.

Dave said...

this oskar blues g'night imperial red is delicious. which is unfortunate, because i think it was eleven bucks for a FOUR pack. i may need to steal it next time.

How was this missed for Squirrel week?

Mark said...

Not done yet but...hey Gheorghies!

Marls said...

Hey Mark.

Mark said...

Hey Marls! Just left Turtle Bay. Killing some Cafe Du Monde.

Mark said...

Hi Gheorghies!

Marls said...

Nice. Grab me some chicory coffee. I'll pass on the beignets. That shit will kill ya.

Danimal said...

so no one made it to MJ's wedding?

Jamie said...

There's a Barcade in Union City, NJ too.

rob said...

post something new, you slackers

Danimal said...

I am traveling. Not being a slacker for the record

Geoff said...

Hi rob...I'm being forced to travel to the booming metropolis of Birmingham, Alabama Wed thru Fri. I'm catching a Barons game Thursday night. Anything else I should be sure not to miss? Am I correct that you have spent some time in Birmingham...or was that Montgomery...or Tuscaloosa...or Klansville or something?

Clarence said...

I think the little guy was in Huntsville.

Mark said...

Klansville's a really quaint little place. At least that's what I've heard.

Mark said...

Does that Jordan fellow still play for the Barons?

rob said...

birmingham is a lovely southern burg. one of the cleaner cities i've ever visited. has a great food scene, too. no charge for the casual racism.

rob said...

wow, chris broussard is a bigoted ass, huh? definitely didn't see that coming. good luck with the fox news/sports gig.

Mark said...

He's stated this opinion before. He uses his Christianity to justify it.

rob said...

just ate at the world's leading purveyor of walleye. minnesota!
