No Contest

NBA All-STAR Weekend is nearly upon us. Which means that All-Star Saturday Night is nearly upon us. Once upon a time, All-Star Saturday Night was an even bigger event than the All-Star Game. It was, at once, a brilliant way to market the NBA and it's stars, a fantastic television event and, in many cases, a place to be seen for both NBA stars and other celebrities. That was a long, long time ago.

In fact, most of us stopped caring about the All-Star Saturday around the time we started drinking (illegally). The biggest reason for this (besides the drinking) is that the signature event of All-Star Saturday night became an event nobody cared about. I'm speaking of the dunk contest, of course. Save for the one year that Vince Carter blew everyone's collective mind, the dunk contest hasn't been worth tuning in to in years. That is, until this year.

Now, don't start thinking that the entire dunk contest is going to be entertaining. No, no, no. We're long past that point. While there are certainly some intriguing participants in this year's contest, (Terrence Ross, Jeremy Evans, and Gerald Green come to mind), there's only one reason to watch this year's dunk contest: James White.

College Basketball fans may remember James White from his time at Cincinnati, or even his one year at Florida. But most basketball fans have no idea who James White is. That will change on Saturday evening. Why? Because James White can do things like this:

Watch the whole video. James White is possibly not from this planet.

this pistorius story is something.

The announcers are Turkish, I believe. Saw the Pistorius story come on the TV while I was at the gym but haven't seen any details. Doesn't look good for Oscar upon first impression.

he apparently tried to run but he didn't have his legs on.

i told you back in june the mofo should not have been allowed to be in the olympics. this would not have happened otherwise. do you think a supermodel is going to date a double amputee if he's just a regular guy? yeah, didn't think so. the ioc has blood on its hands.

and off the topic, i've almost closed the book on "the vasectomy experience". dropped off a little bit of danimal syrup this morning to the lab. yeah, that wasn't embarrassing. "Hi...I'm here to drop off me semen...yeah, it's fresh....just unloaded about 40 minutes ago....sure, i'll put my pants on, sorry...okie dokie...thanks! hope to never see ya again!"

The NRA's reaction will be to arm all bikini models.

Three things before I head out to Londo for vaca:

1. I love all-star weekend, and I'm one of about 73 people who watch every event on NBA-TV over the weekend...even the press conferences. Its even more fun in person for basketball geeks.

2. I sent Gheorghe a b-day note from the Gheorghie crew.

3. And this Pistorius thing is just so shocking and sad. Very OJ-esque

I admit to still watching All Star weekend but that's because I'm a basketball nerd. Attended the one in Philly in 2001. Iverson rented out an entire mall for a party on Friday night.

White dunked with two hands from the FT line. And he did a windmill from the FT line. And he went between his legs from the FT line. Otherworldly.

One time I made a foul shot from the free throw line. It was pretty dope.

I always watch Saturday, but rarely watch the actual game anymore.

I think the dunk contest would be better with no judges. We just want the spectacle. Somehow it seems like selecting winners and losers adds unnecessary tension and awkwardness. Just have a bunch of guys doing cool dunks and don't think about how you'd grade them.

i kinda feel like jerry's always judging us. his last comment is disingenuous.

Clarence said...

Jerry doesn't judge me. He just informs people why I am wrong in most everything I say and do.

Just finished watching the Old 97's kick some fucking ass here in Charlottesville. They really are the top dogs.
