Last night in Rio, Lionel Messi threw an enormous monkey from his back, helping Argentina defeat the host Brazilians, 1-0, to win Copa America. The victory was the first in a major international competition for Argentina since the 1993 Copa, and the first of Messi's dazzling career. The star had a so-so final, but his four goals and five assists during the tournament paced his Albiceleste. The pass at 0:40 in the video below defied the laws of space and time. Lautaro Martinez's finish was pretty dope, too.
Argentina's win was a tasty appetizer for today's action. Falkland War foe England host Italy in the final match of the 2020 European Championship (played in 2021, natch) at 3:00 EST. That's a warmup for the USMNT B team playing Haiti in the first match of the Gold Cup. And nobody's going to forget Loudoun United hosting Miami FC in USL Championship action.
As a form of pregaming, please enjoy these footie-inspired musical offerings from today's Euro combatants.

Wimbledon shaping up to be a tasty appetizer. Berrettini was down 5-2 in the first set and grinded through 7 deuces to get the win. He did not look like a guy who could win. But he just took the first set. This should be a fun match.
Have gotten sucked into late night binge watching of a new Netflix docuseries, This Is Pop. Really good, custom fit for this audience.
this blog is broken right now-- not sure why but some video or something is keeping it from loading on my computer . . .
england 2, italy 1. the loss of spinazzola a huge blow for the azzurri.
The Italian anthem is lame
but their team and fans are way into it. advantage: italy.
gutting for those three england kids who missed. italy were better, but that's a hard way to go out.
Wow. Yankees and England fizzled out at almost the same time.
Note to Gareth Southgate - maybe having a teenager kick a crucial PK was a poor choice.
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say Garrett Southgate won’t coach England again in another major tournament. They got conservative way too early. His PK subs were a total bust and he had a teenager as his anchor. Hindsight is 20-20 but that was a tough one.
counterpoint: southgate has taken england to the semis and final in consecutive major tournaments. i think he’s on the sideline for the world cup next year.
italy!
one for two is not bad . . .
this is my last beer before obft
You’re probably right, Rob. He was good in this tourney but I think he struggles with in game adjustments. He’s England’s Mike Budenholzer.
RIP to PJ Tucker. My God.
i agree with that, mark. he's done a great job with the cultural aspects of building a national team. he was way too conservative today and stuck with a game plan that was never going to lead to england creating any chances after the game was tied.
