More zman Boulliabaise

I've been to lazy to write any posts but I've had lots of ideas. Here are a few.

1. Colin Quinn: The New York Story is on Netflix and it's funny. New Yorkers will love it and people from outside New York will understand why New Yorkers act the way they do. It's worth 60 minutes of your time.

2. You should watch The Chi. Sometimes it's like The Wire, other times it's like What's Happening!!, at all times it's good. It's written by Lena Waithe (from Master of None) and it stars Kima from The Wire, Ronsel from Mudbound, Mister June from True Detective, and a kid who is Rerun's spiritual successor.

3. Malcolm Gladwell! Eddie Alterman! Autonomous cars? Keep an eye out for "Autonomy," coming soon to iTunes.

4. You should read The Bulwark. It's a website full of good writing by smart people who maintain a pre-2016 conservative worldview. Bill Kristol is the editor-in-chief. I estimate that 90% of the articles involve grinding axes against Donald Trump and his bootlickers. There are also well-reasoned think pieces addressing things like flaws in Elizabeth Warren's Medicare for All plan and Middle East policy. These pieces are thoughtful and respectful. Taken together with the other left-leaning stuff I read it's a decent approximation of the Washington Post op-ed section 15 years ago. I miss that.

5. You should sign up for The Dispatch. It's a daily email newsletter written by a couple of guys who defected from National Review when it went full Trump. You can sign up here for free. It's completely self-funded by the authors and by donations from readers. Bare bones, no pictures. It's like The Bulwark only it covers a broader range of stuff.

6. You should listen to Roy Ayers. He's been buried in my iPod for years without getting any run. zson wanted to listen to something he never heard before so I put it on. Everybody sampled him. His shit is dope.

7. X Clan still holds up. Speaking of sampling Roy Ayers, I haven't listened to X Clan in over 20 years until this weekend and they still bang.

This song was oddly prescient ...

you should call this on zsyllabus. professor z dropping science crumbs for the masses to pick up, 'cause he's too lazy to feed us.

on, one, whatever.

also, someone needs to check on mark. his ribcage is likely dangerously sore this morning from laughing at the news that florida state is considering deion sanders as its head football coach.

Drink some and come see them at the Beacon in February!

Zson is digging into some deep cuts. I think I exposed my boys to too much obscure stuff in their youth, and now they're hesitant to acknowledge my unimpeachable taste in music. I assume they'll grow out of it, but who knows?

My kids like Alt Nation rock and hip hop. Zero interest in old dad’s recs, for the most part. But I can sometimes get them excited when I play bangin’ old school hip hop.

Our last trip to the Beacon was fun. Was that 20 years ago? More?

Was March of ‘97! First year of the Allmans’ Beacon residency.

In related news about epic music, Quiet Riot’s 14th album drops today. First (and surely last) single is Don’t Call It Love. Should be called Don’t Call It Good.

Fun facts: only original member of band is drummer Frankie Banali. And the frontman of the band during the recording session (James Durbin) just left the band. The new frontman is (for realz) Jizzy Pearl.

I was awakened this morning by TJ texting me Ian Rapoport’s tweet about Deion being a leading candidate at FSU. I laughed quite a bit. What a fucking shit show that Athletic Department is.

Going off to get tattooed for the first time in over a year this afternoon. I took a long break after my back was finished. Ready to be in pain again. And from the look of what my tattoo artist texted me last night he’s more than willing to oblige.

tribe men's soccer 4, northeastern 1 in the first round of the caa tournament. tribe takes on top-seeded unc-wilmington tomorrow in the semis.

had a chance to speak to former w&m head coach (and pi lam) al albert today. he's bullish on the direction of the program - says we have 5 true freshmen starting right now and a kid coming next year who has a chance to be a first-division professional.

tribe hoops at american this evening. eagles lost, 96-80, to teej's second-favorite team, siena, in their opener. bender has been a house of horrors for the tribe dating back to when american was in the caa. american are 3.5-point favorites.

Line is 3 if you drive over the WV border to place a bet.

I’m happy to report that getting you thigh tattooed is far less painful than your back.

Pretty sure Al Albert is 80 y/o. Is a winning record too much to ask for?

For those of you who like to laugh out loud, the Artie Lange episode on Joe Rohan’s podcast is 100 minutes of comedy gold. Artie is very lucid and totally present. He goes through many details of his past openly, and has at least six hilarious party stories. There are some amazing stories told.

Rogan’s podcast has been en fuego of late.

My stepdaughter turns 18 today. We’re taking her and friends to Gaylord Palms and renting them a suite for the night. The wife, kid and I will be in a different room on the other side of the complex.

Taking the younger kid to the Orlando Science Center for the afternoon. It’s really interactive and fun. Hopefully that earns me enough Dad/Husband points to take in the second half of Bama-LSU.

Those who had the under in this tcu/Baylor game had it locked up at the end of regulation, but not really. Talk about a bad beat....9-9 going into OT with a 48 pt o/u. Currently at 52 and not over.

Me watching LSU/Bama: wait that’s Randy Moss’ kid?

Me, a second later: fuck I’m old

Mark said...

Got to the hotel just in time to see the last two LSU TDs. I don’t particularly care for LSU but it’s fun to see Bama take an asskicking. Also, Florida is clearly better than Bama, right?

TR said...

I’m gonna bet Randy Moss started practicing making babies at an early age.

All else equal, I’d prefer a close game. But watching Saban scream and pout and lose is also fun.

Same, TR. Same.

LSU fans getting real, real nervous.

Illinois - MSU was bonkers. And Lovie Smith’s beard is beyond awesome.

Mark said...

I promise this isn’t just hindsight. I couldn’t hate Matt Campbell’s decision to go for two more than I initially did. You have all the momentum. Norman is shook. Take the game to OT.
