Resurrection (May Contain Blasphemy)

It's been a cow's age since I anticipated a new record as much as I do this month's Old 97's release. Twenty years since the band's first album, Most Messed Up is being hyped as a return to its roots, a rollicking, raunchy mess. I mean that in the most positive way possible.

Various reviewers have described the record as "a boozy, blurry whirl", "balls-out, country-fried rock", and "blistered, blasted, and brilliant". After a run of releases that were perfectly good, hook-heavy pop offerings, the work of a rock quartet maturing in and out of the studio, the band's long-time fans are thrilled by the notion that the 97's may be returning to Too Far to Care's barely-on-the-tracks vibe.

The record comes out on April 29. It's the first one I've ever pre-ordered, so I get my first listen next Friday. Until then, here's 97's frontman Rhett Miller with a solo version of the title track. It's most definitely NSFW or for children's ears.

zfamily is home. Abject shitshow. I see lots of whiskey in my future.

You won't see a better pairing of NBA uniforms than the ones in today's Nets-Raptors game.

Mark said...

The Playoffs start today and I'm going to drink beer and eat poutine in a few hours. What a day.

Dave said...

congrats on the zfamily! name?

I was really excited for the Clippers-Warriors series until Andrew Bogut was injured. Can't see Golden State winning it now.

zman said...

Dave--check your email.

rob said...

his name is zman. for a smart dude, dave's pretty easily confused.

if i were the raptors ownership, i'd probably not be thrilled with masai ujiri yelling 'fuck brooklyn' at a pregame rally, but if i were a raptors fan, i'd think my gm was pretty cool.

JJ Redick has a pretty sweet life. Lives in LA during the season and Austin during the offseason.

Also he's the type of guy who orders shots for a group of people but doesn't pick up the bill for the shots. Very Duke of him.

Mark said...

If yiu were Raptors ownership you'd be pretty happy to have Ujiri as your GM, Rob. He's really good at his job.

Blake Griffin is so skilled. Not a better ball handling/passing big man in the league.

this third quarter has been silly

Mark said...

This game is quite entertaining.

kent bazemore is on twitter rooting for the warriors. that's pretty great.

The Clippers have multiple players with baseball team logo tattoos. These are the things I notice when watching basketball.

Rob, as a guy who has held the 97's in his top spot for bands since Fight Songs, who thinks the first five albums are as fantastic as any five in any rock and roll band's catalog, and and who, like Zman, thinks the deserved successes and happiness they have enjoyed over the last decade has softened recent output significantly, I really hope you're right about this record. The cynic in me (his name's Lou) fears that it might come off as contrived. But I would like to be wrong.

Mark said...

Shutup, Lou.

I ate oxtail poutine this evening. So good. I'm at the point with poutine that I'm going to learn to ate some at home. But with milk gravy.

Mark said...

Replace the second ate with make. Because, as always, I'm not very smart.

Shlara said...

Nice that my OKC GM BF Sam Presti got some camera time!

rob said...

oxtail poutine? can i stay at your house when i leave my family to move to florida?

rob said...

and clarence, nobody will be more disappointed than this guy if the record sucks. i've not been more excited for a release in forever. reviews have been unanimously good, the tracks i've heard are great. the bar is set high.

Shlara said...

this game is so lop-sided that the OKC fans are bored

Is Jalen wearing a pink seersucker jacket?
Strong move on Easter weekend to open the NBA playoffs.

rob said...

is there any reason not to drop a hundy on the nets to win the east at 12-1?

Mark said...

Only reason is you put all your money on Atlanta over Indiana and you're being fiscally responsible.

Oxtail poutine is pretty great. You don't have to leave your family, Rob. Just come visit when Teek and Mrs. Teej make their annual trip.

Mark said...

I don't know who Teek is but I think he's related to Teej.

rob said...

teek might be the little monkey on baconbaking's shoulder

zman said...

My dining room table is teek

Having a three year old son is like having a poorly trained dog. He refuses to be housebroken, he has been known to bite, he breaks things that should not be capable of fracturing, he makes a mess when he eats, he knocks everything over, he slobbers, he howls in the middle of the night. And the sounds coming from upstairs right now make the worry that he's tearing the bedrooms apart.

Church. The most stressful hour of the week, by far. Or month rather. Home now and both my wife and I are drinking.

Danimal said...

So our neighbors put up the brother of the husband for a couple of months per year. He's an out of work electrician who goes to town with chores and odd jobs for his time here. He's a nice guy, the crazy, favorite uncle type. He is never, well except when doing what he is doing now, without his "coffee thermos". He has been planning this Epic Easter egg hunt for weeks. He is literally in our back yard right now, shirtless and carrying their pool skimmer thing. He is wearing a bandana and camo cargo pants. There are eggs hanging from their lanai above the middle of their pool, from palm trees, and I have to guess in the jungle behind our houses. It begins in 20 min and we adults are expected to participate. Update later.

Danimal said...

And it's about 55degrees and misting off and on.

Danimal said...

About to pour my 2nd and very large Irish coffee into my thermos.

Mark said...

Fuck Easter egg hunts. I've got two in my plans today. Luckily bacon and ribs are involved in the pre and post hunt activities.

Mark said...

Also, my father in law gives no fucks. None.

mr kq said...

This is good stuff keep em coming. I expect M80s n gunfire n shit.

rob said...

the church hangover is among the worst of all hangovers.

Mark said...

Totally used my kid's need for sleep to skip out on church. I've successfully skipped out on church for both Christmas and Easter. Never going to church again.

Probably not true but a man can dream.

zman said...

What's a church?

mr kq said...

Under the Milky Way!

zman said...

The Milky Way closed down.

brunch drunk is far better than church hungover

parked next to a bentley at brunch. pretty sure my minivan caught his eye, too.

Trying to watch Dirty Work as I advance my buzz, and unfortunately while mom-in-law chirping about Words with Friends.

Dave said...

i threatened my kids with church this morning and they laughed. they know an empty threat when they hear it.

Danimal said...

Anybody else see a twice baked once ingested potato regurgitated onto the 3 year old's dinner plate today? No? Just me then?

Shlara said...

I ate too much at Cafe Milano's Easter brunch. Now I need a nap, so I can focus for the Wiz vs Bulls game.

zman said...

RIP Hurricane Carter.

Let's go wiz

mayhugh said...

Yeah, really. Exceed my expectations, please.

rob said...

gettin' my culture on this evening - family outing to the washington ballet. oddly, the wiz game isn't on television anywhere here.

Mark said...

I ate a lot of ribs and eggplant tonight. Might celebrate the other holiday occurring today and go back for late night seconds.

Mark said...

Pretty cool that Marv Albert and Steve Kerr are dressed like idiots as a show if support for Craig Sager.

I'll be at my eighth Boston Marathon tomorrow hanging with all the runners pre-start. If you all know anyone running, tell them to stop by say and hi to me at the info booth in the Village. I'll be the dorky short guy with several two-way radios and my cell phone plaster to my skull. Going to be a different vibe this year but still looking forward to it.

Will try to tweet some random shit tomorrow. More so than normal.

Shlara said...

I finally downloaded the NBA game time app---it's awesome. So many real time stats.

If I hadn't just copped a pair if EQT Supports (nostalgia!) I would get those Stan Smith Vulc jawns in grey/red. Hard to find a better summer shoe for $70.
