Me, post-bonk. My wife, contemplating her life choices. |
The rest of the race was one of the worst athletic/endurance experiences I've had. I dragged my sorry ass home in 44 minutes and 50 seconds, crossing the finish line more pissed than happy.
In an effort to cheer myself up, I cranked the new Chvrches record all afternoon and into today. The Glaswegian trio has been described as 'a godless hurricane of kinetic pop energy'. If you dig guitar-driven hooks, Chvrches ain't your thing. But if you can find time in your rotation for ultra-poppy, super-hooky electronic stuff, this is just the thing. Oh, and in what will come as completely predictable to those of you that know my weakness for the type, lead singer Lauren Mayberry is both terribly pretty and possessing of the kind of take-no-shit-demand-respect attitude I hope to cultivate in my daughters. Check out the full album, The Bones of What You Believe, at your local internet free music purveyor, and dig on 'The Mother We Share' and 'Recover' below.
And I can't wait for next year's Ragnar.

If you like Chvrches you should check out T'pau.
Heart and Soul is boss.
I was unfamiliar with the term "bonking," except in this context. Now I know.
Rob, that picture of you & Sam is awesome--she looks great!
rob is familiar with bonking.
Jacksonville (+28) @ Denver
We should all have to pick this game.
Denver. By 35.
"Thad gives us the best chance," Marrone said. "We're going to give him an opportunity to see what he has."
An undrafted QB out of Duke is the Bills' best chance? God help me. History is not on my side.

And Dave Brown too!

It's amazing to say this, but Bills dropping Tarvaris Jackson for no reason was a mistake. He might be a barely functional NFL QB, but he is leaps and bounds better than Tuel Time and Thaddeus.
The Bills love QB's from US News top 10 schools (Fitz, Trent Edwards, Lewis). It's a great approach for building an economics department but for building a viable NFL offense.
i tried to convince myself this morning that the jags were the correct side of that bet. but there's no way they hold denver to fewer than 42 points, and there's very little chance they score as many as 14.
Ken Cucinelli's bid to reinstitute Virginia's anti-sodomy laws was tossed out. You know how to celebrate, Virginians.
This mini-takedown of Bill Simmons by Drew Magary from last week is worth reading. Calls out most of what I don't like about Simmons' writing.
Full disclosure: he's still one of my favorite sportswriters and I listen to (and enjoy) almost all of his podcasts.

Matt Flynn just got released by the Raiders. Seahawks and Raiders have paid him 14.5 mil last two seasons to suck donkey balls and barely see the field. Not a bad gig.
Flynn is an upgrade at QB over Thad Lewis. But I doubt his SAT scores are better.
I guess the guys who write for Deadspin don't read Harper's? Writing about writing (i.e., criticism) in a tremendously popular topic. NYT has an entire section devoted to it every Sunday. The pop culture stuff at Grantland is, at least for me, much more entertaining than the sports stuff. Other than Barnwell and sometimes Mays (and despite their excessive use of commas), most of the sports stuff is just a rehash of the same tropes and themes over and over again.
I've said this a bunch if times re: Grantland. Zach Lowe is really good. He writes about the NBA.
I was just in an orthopedic practice and one of the patients in the waiting room was wearing a San Diego Chargers Marcus McNeil jersey. Based on appearance, I don't believe he's related to Marcus McNeil.
The Barnwell/Mays NFL podcast is very good, except for the fact that, Yes Mays, they can't help themselves from addressing each other, What's that Barnwell, by last name roughly 4,000,000 times per episode. Thanks Mays.
I understand the disdain for Simmons' need to rank everything but accessibility is his bread and butter. Andy Greenwald's articles essentially say "I majored in literature at an Ivy League school and I'm going to make sure you know it because I have a chip on my shoulder that I write for a glorified blog instead of a real magazine" and I find that more off-putting than Simmons' everyman approach.
The new Fox News Reporting studio set up has to be a joke, right? They have people sitting in front of 55" touchscreens looking at news. Damn the ergonomics of sitting at a desk.

Will be some very tolerable sleep deprivation if the Jets can hold on here.
Licking my wounds from the bullshit devil rays win. Trivia question: what are the 5 oldest ballparks after Fenway and wrigley? In any order.
Chavez Ravine?
Coliseum?
Struggling on others.
You're right so far
I think Royals Stadium (Ewing Kaufman) must be up there. everything else I can think of is new.
Doesn't it seem like Yankee Stadium should be on this list, like everything they do is so storied that they never should have had the new stadium in the 70's and again a few years back? I root against the Yankees, but I tip my cap to the continuity of all things Yankee, from the pinstripes to the championships to the douches that cheer them on. New stadia go against that.
Either the jets are decent or the falcons are bad. Not sure which.
Yes. Bad mojo for tearing down the house that Ruth built.
That's 3 for 3 Yankees stadium not on the list. There's an old one you're missing and then the first "new one"
Camden yards?
Close but no
Camden 1992 three prior to that
I'm done. Would have to cheat to get the other 2. Squirrel can probably close it out... if he's woken up from that humdinger of a race he did.
Humdinger of a bonk.
I remember sleeping for days after a big ol' bonk.
I'll let rob take a shot unless marls beats him to it when he checks in at 4:30a
I once bonked for days. Now I bonk with myself.
Zman after 3 kids in 4 yrs that's safest way to go
Okay, so Lumpy got me doing some Internet searches, and here's part of why I love the modern era and the Interwebs. First, I looked up the answer to his question. Wow.
Also, I looked up on retrosheet (excellent site) the first two big league ballgames I attended. They were just fading memories, but now I know more.
1. http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1978/B04150BAL1978.htm
We drove up to see some Bal'mer friends and hit Memorial Stadium for O's/Brew Crew. Jim Palmer pitched one of his last great shutouts and the Orioles won 7-0 over a pretty stacked group of eventual Harvey's Wallbangers.

Fool that I was, I preferred the Yanks to my family's beloved Mets, and my awesome grandparents took me to a game at Yankee Stadium despite their rooting interest. We rode the train to the Bronx. Somewhere along the way my grandfather was pickpocketed. My grandmother (a) cried to the ticket-taker and (b) knew the section and seat #'s. Amazingly (it was the 70's), they let us in. We watched until it got a bit late to be roaming around The Bronx, and then we headed back to their apartment in the city. (He was top dog at Cooper Union back then, so they had set him up with a pad. The doorman let us know Reggie had tied it up with a dinger, and my grandparents late me stay up to see the end as the hometown team nipped the Sox. Great memory brought back by a box score.
I love baseball, baseball cards (finish it, TR), box scores, live baseball, old ballparks, and baseball memories. Thanks, Lumpy.
Why I love Jason Dufner:
@JasonDufner Boom boom getting him a full view today on 18!' pic.twitter.com/bHF7nmJ7xB
So are the Jets secretly kind of good? Their D is nasty and the offense might not be a total abortion.
I'm not a Jets fan but I'm developing a man crush on Muhammad Wilkerson.
Everything about that game last night made no sense. I think it was an anomaly and things will go back to normal next week, with Smith turning the ball over and the Jets ruining peoples lives.
Have I mentioned that I have nothing to do?
Dodgers Stadium is #3. And no, I didn't look that up. I had a similar discussion last week.
I didn't realize that the Thursday night (11/7) that Oregon is playing Stanford will also feature Oklahoma-Baylor. I might have "work from home" the next day.
The Braves made their mascot catch Chipper Jones' first pitch a couple games ago because the players were mad he picked the Dodgers to win their series against Atlanta. The Braves are the worst.
I'm no fan of Chipper, but that is ridiculous. Such wieners. Loved seeing them bounced in the first round.
As a basketball nerd I'm really excited for tonight's 30 for 30, Free Spirits. I love all things ABA and was allowed to conduct my own independent study during my senior year at Florida. I did History of the ABA. Research was hard but thoroughly enjoyable. I expect tonight's doc to be great.
If you're interested, Terry Pluto's book 'Loose Balls' is the definitive book on the ABA.
Oh, and hey, Atlanta, sorry about your football team losing to the lowly Jets on the same night the Braves' season ended. And sorry your hockey team moved out of town (again). And the Hawks haven't made it out of the second round of the playoffs since... ever.
Sucks to be looking up at Philly's pro teams. But that's what you get. Be known for more than strip clubs and traffic and racism.
Sorry.
I am also looking forward to Free Spirits. They're not as close to home as the Virginia Squires, but they're a much more intriguing story.
The first time I went to Atlanta I got into a cab at the airport and on my way to the hotel the cabby asked "My friend, you want to go streep club? Very close!" I didn't know that Atlanta was a strip club mecca. Probably because I previously spent zero time thinking about Atlanta.
julio jones out for the year. dagger. that dude was having a beast year.

there's no "i" in bonked.
but if there was, it wouldn't be such a bad thing.
One to the left
That clattering sound you hear is everyone typing "harry douglas" into the search field of their fantasy football league.
Wilkerson is indeed a stud. Has been very fun to watch him develop. Has been a true beast since the middle of last year. And rookie Sheldon Richardson is even better out of the gate than Wilkerson was. Not a bad return for Revis.
Sexy Rexy is coaching his way into keeping his job and us Jets fans have a sense of hope for the first time in a few years. Geno has been through a shitstorm of negative press over the last twelve months, ever since his Heisman campaign collapsed mid-year in 2012. But he's shown in a few key games that he does not shy away from the moment. Given that some of his INTs and fumbles were rookie mistakes, it's fair to think he could be decent.
There are 10 AFC teams w/ 2 or fewer losses, so I'm not penciling them in for the playoffs. And they have some tough games ahead after Pitt at home (NE at home, at Cincy, New Orleans at home). If they can go 2-2 through that stretch, they'll be 5-4 into an easier back half of schedule (at Buffalo, at Baltimore, Miami, Oakland, at Carolina, Cleveland, at Miami). An 8-8 season is in the cards, but we have a glimmer of hope, especially if we can bring in a safety and a skill player or two on offense next year.
That glimmer of hope will turn into a shard of pain, I've been there.
Geno made some very nice throws last night. Throws Sanchez doesn't make. I have been reluctant to get sucked in by this team, but fuck it, that defense is nasty and Geno Christ Superstar is my homeboy.
Meeting Jerry and the Teedges (and others) at the Cowboy Cafe for 1/2 priced burgers and beer tonight. Good to be back in the old neighborhood.
I sensed a disturbance in the force.
Funny you should pipe up. There is a dude in the booth behind me who sounds exactly like you and is an opinionated know it all just like you. He even kind of looks like you. Can't endure him. But I am your friend so (a) I am amused by you and (b) I can make fun of you and tell you to shut the hell up. This bizarro Zman sucks.
for a self-professed man of the people, clarence sure tells a lot of folks to shut the hell up.
Shut up, Rob.
I bet the guy behind you is smart as hell and handsome as fuckall.
for a self-professed dick, mark sure is.
Hi Clarence.
This reminds me of a very clean and less indie sounding Grimes, I like this. Checkout Amanda
