An offline editor's request

rob emailed me this morning and asked that we post the image below, directed at Congress (I would have to think he wants this specifically aimed at the House):

I took some creative liberties in WHAT type of middle finger image was chosen.

Hi Gheorghies--I need your help.
And your opinion.

I'm doing a survey for my journalism ethics class--can you take 10 mins and share your views with me?

thanks!!

Hey, there are 885 reasons why Congress gets the middle finger, but on a more positive note, WXPN in Philly (my workplace streaming radio station of choice) is running through the voter's choices of the top 885 songs of the new millennium (2001-2013). Arbitrary list owing to their space on the dial (88.5 FM), and lists like these usually aren't worth much -- unless you are playing them all in succession over the entirety of this week. So far it's highly enjoyable.

They're at Song 669 right now (Band of Horses, "Is There a Ghost"). Here's the countdown list thus far, and there's a link to listen along, and it's a far better way to pass the time than waiting for an approved budget or a debt ceiling agreement.

this is cathartic and completely pointless: http://fuckyoucongress.com

Clarence, this is great - gives me a break from Pandora. Nice work.

i don't mean to be alarmist, but have you guys noticed that the house of representatives is bugfuck crazy?

Marls said...

Fronm the NYT:

House Republicans were extremely unhappy with the Senate plan.

“We’ve got a name for it in the House: it’s called the Senate surrender caucus,” said Representative Tim Huelskamp, Republican of Kansas. “Anybody who would vote for that in the House as Republican would virtually guarantee a primary challenger.”

And there it is...gerrymandering's ultimate victory. House members are more scared of getting outflanked on the right in their next primary than they are of driving the economic stability of the country off a cliff.

How about this conservative notion....pay your bills.

Geoff said...

Default imminent. Time to panic.

zman said...

Because defaulting WOULDN'T guarantee a primary challenger? If the Representative from Kansas would like to reduce federal spending, perhaps he should direct some of his ire towards farming subsidies. Oh, right, that spending is cool in Kansas.

Geoff said...

Too stupid to scare.

Guess someone forgot to pay the powerbill at comerica this month.

zman said...

The Sawks's beards have gone too far. They look like the Pug Uglies from gangs of new York. Just stupid.

The announcers's mikes were broken for a few minutes. It was blissful.

I'm watching AIRWOLF on something called G4

Barbara Buono is shrill and she forgot to dye her roots. Christie is fat but smart.

Turned to this Leonard/Duran 30 for 30. Good stuff do far.

thanks for taking my survey boys!

Does it bother anyone else when people answer a question with "Well I will,say this ..."?

Hi Gheorghies.

panama led the usmnt by a goal in stoppage time last night. had they won, they were going to a playoff for a berth in the world cup. the us scored twice in 90 seconds to crush panama's dreams and send a mediocre mexico side through. dagger.

Shutdown is over. House GOP caved. Depending on Sen cloture timing, could be done today, or tomorrow, Friday latest. GOP will effectively get nothing in exchange for shutdown. Legislative/political malpractice.

Squeaky said...

Geoff, I try not to follow the dipshits in DC, having grown up in the area. Since I'm out of touch with that subject, got any suggestions for RSS feeds I can quickly glance at/dismiss if I want? Rob, I know you'll have a few as well.

rob said...

just use twitter, squeak. there are tons of good journo follows, as well as house/senate staff.

among others, i like:

@joshtpm (liberal)
@daveweigel (pisses off both sides)
@brendanbuck (boehner's chief of staff)
@brianbeutler (slate - lefty)
@antderosa (circa)
@ezraklein (wapo wonkblog)
@robertcostaNRO (great conservative sources)

rob said...

buck is boehner's press secretary, not chief of staff. either job would suck right now.

Geoff said...

All of those are good. I also like following John Feheery (Hastert's old chief), Jim Manley (Reid's old chief), Don Stewart (@stewsays--McConnell's comms guy) and about 1800 others.

mayhugh said...

The GOP is not even getting gumballs and some Bennigan's coupons?

zman said...

10% off Pollo Rico coupons is my understanding.

rob said...

tortilla coast, actually.

Geoff said...

Just FYI...during the shutdown, Ted Cruz raised over $1M in campaign cash. Seems like it was a success.

Clarence said...

This Just In: Nominees for induction in this year's Rock n Roll Hall of Fame include Nirvana, KISS, The Replacements (they're good, TR), and . . . wait for it . . . Hall & Oates!!

And a bunch of other California vagina sailors.

zman said...

This is the first time I've heard NWA referred to as "California vagina sailors."

zman said...

If you donate money to Ted Cruz you should immediately be disqualified from voting; disenfranchisement on stupidity grounds.

So I get to vote in a special election today. I must choose between two men to send to the Senate. One went to Stanford and Yale Law School. The other's website says "Steve rejects the notion that Americans should have to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars each year to fight alleged 'Global Warming.'"

TR said...

Elitist musical reference forthcoming: There is one angry TR and 200 solemn Dominicans at 47th & Park Ave. today.

The Hispanics Across American organization (that is being paid by A-Rod) is continuing its protest outside MLB HQ today. They have whistles and are yelling and chanting and otherwise fulfilling negative stereotypes folks have about lower-income Latinos who don't work for a living.

They are allegedly going to camp out there until A-Rod's appeal hearing is over, which is slated for sometime after the end of the World Series. My window faces right onto them. I hate them all and wish I could open my window and hurl eggs or feces at them.

zman said...

There is only one TR and he's usually angry whilst at 47th & Park Ave.

Mark said...

The first day back at work after vacation is always a bummer. My coworkers are going out if their way to make it as painful as possible with their indifference though. I'd like to hurl eggs or feces at them.

With all that said, things are going better for me than Victor Page.

i am so out of it, gheorghe-wise and national news-wise. this might not be a bad thing, although i do want a little machine that makes fresh high-quality beer.

Donna said...

Unlike Dave, I am reading Gheorghe regularly (you guys amuse me) and moderately in touch with what's goin' on nationally - via Jon Stewart of course.
And y'all even educate me at times...to which end, I'm wondering how to watch the documentary, "Schooled"...you mentioned EPIX - if that isn't available, other options? By chance...I'm interested, if for no other reason I work with "student"-athletes a lot and it's interesting to say the least. And this is at a non-NCAA school that is looking possibly at entering it in Div II.

Clarence said...

TR, that's a Ben Folds Five reference, no?

TR said...

Less angry after seeing this link:

http://www.gq.com/women/photos/201311/emily-ratajkowski-blurred-lines-november-2013?mbid=gqpr#slide=1

Technically SFW b/c it's GQ, but not really.

TR said...

Yes to Clarence. My hipster references are, like me, 15 years past their prime.

mayhugh said...

I don't typically follow the goings-on in Congress so this is probably normal, but can these guys stop acting like they have 2 weeks before the debt ceiling deadline. I'm sick of whatching these guys jibberjabber.

Squeaky said...

Thanks for the twitter follow list. And there is a competing kickstarter for the picobrew: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cargo/brewbot-the-smart-brewing-appliance

In case $1,500 wasn't enough to spend on brewing automation.
