Nova, down 11 at the half to the Hoyas, now down just 1. I must say, I was pretty impressed by them yesterday, though maybe that's more a reflection of their opponent sucking balls than them being good.
From what I hear, its LSU unless some another, higher profile school has an opening soon. If it comes down to LSU and So. Car then its definitely LSU. They've got deeper pockets, better facilities, a better local talent pool and the SEC West is the easier of the two divisions.
Also, I wish I could've been in the room when the ESPN execs sent some low level employee into the dressing room to try and convince Bobby Knight to eschew the golf pullover/polo shirt combo for a jacket and tie last night. That had to be one of the all time great one-sided conversations.
The Jan Michael Vincent story is beyond depressing. He's been a raging alcoholic for so long that it's a wonder he's still alive. This decade, he still has benders where he goes AWOL for weeks at a time, sleeps like a bum in parks and on the beach, and drinks like a fish.
If you want to see a good flick with a young Jan Michael Vincent and a very young (and hilarious) Gary Busey, check out Big Wednesday. The Greatest American Hero and his blonde 'fro are in this as well.
Question: If you're a high school senior with a basketball scholarship offer to Penn St. and then a bunch of decent mid-majors like Kent State, Creighton, etc. Why in God's name would you ever got to Penn St.?
teejay, flirting with disaster all day long. i'm not standing anywhere near you today. though, i'd probably be okay, as the lightning bolt would get you way before it got down to me.
Maryland hasn't seemed to have a ton of talent in recent years. I know that Williams usually goes for under the radar guys but he hasn't been as successful finding and/or developing that talent in recent days.
Why, exactly, doesn't Maryland recruit more/better in Baltimore? For christ's sake, Syracuse consistently beats them out for top guys there.
i dunno - this team has some talent. gist is a huge talent, but soft. vazquez is a huge talent, but an undisciplined nutjob. hayes is talented and has no confidence whatsoever. milbourne, talented, soft. and so on.
Pretty exciting day in the SEC tourney, even with out Florida (sigh). Lofton hits a 25 footer to win it for Tennessee and now Bama rattles home a deep three to send their game against MSU to OT.
Rick Stansbury's hissy fit after Ben Hansbrough didn't foul and allowed Bama to get the 3 off was priceless.
For the record, Tyler Hansborough's "dance" after hitting the baseline jumper to beat VaTech may be the whitest celebration by a Caucasian in the history of the sport. Wow.
No way he excels in the NBA. Hibbert will be a much better pro.
i don't know - i can't remember anyone playing as consistently hard as hansbrough does. might not be sustainable at the nba level, but i could see him being a reasonably effective nba player.
In terms of horrendousness, the scale has been established by the horrendous dress shirt Bobby Knight is wearing underneath his ESPN sweater in the Bristol studio. It's terrible in the way that a paisley dress shirt is terrible, except worse.
Since we're talking about horrendous, how 'bout your SEC Tournament final...Georgia vs. Arkansas. There's literally hundreds of people eagerly awaiting this craptastic contest.
or coppin state and its 16-20 record making a beeline for dayton. and if the ncaa wanted to generate interest in the play-in game, they'd have the last two at-large teams that got in play on tuesday instead of two conference champs that earned their way in. i might watch arizona vs. villanova. i sure won't watch coppin state vs. mississippi valley state.
love that baylor got in - that's an amazing turnaround for scott drew and that program. don't love that the mvc and the caa got shut out. at least arizona state didn't make it.
VCU wasn't even among those listed as a bubble team that was denied. A very bad year for the CAA, if the intent was to land multiple teams in the big tourney. A good year if unforeseen uprisings and upsets are your bag.
i jabbed sharp sticks in my eardrums while dickie v was asking bob knight about how delightful coach k's scrotum smelled while at army. in case any of you wonder why i don't hear so well for the next few days.
also a bit nonplussed about all the mid vs. mid first-rounders. at least 3 quality mid-majors go out in the first round no matter what, with butler/so. alabama, kent state/unlv, and gonzaga/davidson in round 1.
and jay bilas just picked all 4 top seeds into the final four. brilliant and nuanced evaluation.
and because i know you care, my official bracket entry for money has louisville, kansas, stanford, and ucla in the final four, with ucla beating louisville for the nets. no chance whatsoever that happens.
Nova, down 11 at the half to the Hoyas, now down just 1. I must say, I was pretty impressed by them yesterday, though maybe that's more a reflection of their opponent sucking balls than them being good.
ReplyDeleteaaaand, now it's a 9-point hoyas edge.
ReplyDeleteDayton needs the upset of Xavier right now...and I don't think it's gonna happen.
ReplyDeleteRead it in his voice. And laugh:
ReplyDelete"The Rockets have won 20 games straight," sung Dikembe Mutombo to nobody in particular. "All the critics can kiss my black ass."
beileins!
ReplyDeleteWhat beats Jan Michael Vincent playing a stand up bass in a canoe?
ReplyDeleteMan, I typed "Jan Michael Vincent" into the YouTubes search abacus, and the interview clips with him that popped up are terribly depressing.
ReplyDeleteStringfellow Hawke, we miss you greatly.
pat knight, not a great coach.
ReplyDeleteI'll tell you what beats it, Geoff: Ernest Borgnine flying a helicopter.
ReplyDeleteI could enjoy a couple of beers with Airwolf.
ReplyDeleteI went out for some beers with Atlantic Monthly magazine this morning. Delightful.
ReplyDeletei'm proud of you, geoff. that's mighty bipartisan.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteAnd yesterday I was taking shots with Paul Harris and Jhonny Flynn.
ReplyDeletedave odom lives to coach another day.
ReplyDeletedoes anthony grant take that job or the one at lsu?
Tommy Amaker is the coach of Harvard? How did that happen?
ReplyDeleterobust offensive performance in the first half of the nc state/miami tilt.
ReplyDeleteGreg, he won't be for long...appears Tommy is still a cheater, even at an Ivy school, and will be bitch slapped by the NCAA soon.
ReplyDeleteI thought Dave Odom was dead?
ReplyDeleteOh wait, that's Skip Prosser...my bad.
dude.
ReplyDeleteI know, I know...
ReplyDeleteAnyhoo, I'm curious what (non-lawyer) Mark thinks of Grant's next destination. I say LSU all the way.
From what I hear, its LSU unless some another, higher profile school has an opening soon. If it comes down to LSU and So. Car then its definitely LSU. They've got deeper pockets, better facilities, a better local talent pool and the SEC West is the easier of the two divisions.

Nice of UAB to get out of VCU's way...
ReplyDeleteThe Jan Michael Vincent story is beyond depressing. He's been a raging alcoholic for so long that it's a wonder he's still alive. This decade, he still has benders where he goes AWOL for weeks at a time, sleeps like a bum in parks and on the beach, and drinks like a fish.

FWIW, I strenuously disagree with whoever said they thought UAB deserved a bid more than S. Alabama.
ReplyDeleteThat might've been Dennis...
ReplyDeletebaylor already in or do they need to win this?
ReplyDeleteYea, well, fuck Dennis then.
ReplyDeleteQuestion: If you're a high school senior with a basketball scholarship offer to Penn St. and then a bunch of decent mid-majors like Kent State, Creighton, etc. Why in God's name would you ever got to Penn St.?
A Baylor loss today kills their chances.
ReplyDelete(Wait for it...)
because you enjoy living in the middle of fucking nowhere and get off on cold winters and fair-weather hoops fans. duh.
ReplyDeleteteejay, flirting with disaster all day long. i'm not standing anywhere near you today. though, i'd probably be okay, as the lightning bolt would get you way before it got down to me.
ReplyDeleteThen, Shazam!, I become Captain Marvel...
ReplyDeleteOther than the fair weathered hoops fans, you could say all the same things about most of the midwestern mid-majors.
ReplyDeleteYou're wrong TJ. A loss will not bury Baylor in the desert of the NIT...
...inching away...
ReplyDeletewolfpack up to a point a minute pace. nice.
ReplyDeleteour boy roy hibbert's line against 'nova: 0 pts, 4 reb, 5 fouls. niiiiiice.
ReplyDeleteNow we just need to wait half a decade for either Dennis or Geoff to win that bet. Sweet.
ReplyDeleteI love that bet.
ReplyDeleteboy, illinois really does suck, huh?
ReplyDeletethey still suck.
ReplyDeletec'mon, usc. you bastards.
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched much WV this year but damn if Joe Alexander isn't impressive.
ReplyDeleteAnd, the refs have ruined this game...
Alright, I was wrong. This game is getting really, really good.
ReplyDeleteYeah, nevermind.
ReplyDeleteJoe Alexander with the flush!!
ReplyDeletewhere did he come from? all of a sudden he's dropping 30 like he's kobe.
ReplyDeletebaylor! scrappy!
ReplyDeletelacedarius. not a name.
ReplyDeleteMy uncle is named "Lacedarius".
ReplyDeletehttp://wheelhouse.blogspot.com/2008/01/roy-hibbert-is-standing-in-cement.html
ReplyDeleteSomeone told Florida they have a game right?
ReplyDeletei know Florida had a young team this year, but they have folded like few I've ever seen down the stretch.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid they may lose in the first round of the NIT.
Houston, Ole Miss and Maryland...VCU thanks you.
ReplyDeleteAnd how 'bout some love for the Wiz. 32-32 with a roster in disarray.
you forgot to mention umass, oregon, and arizona. nice day for the bubble.
ReplyDeletegary williams has had a miserable year. what the hell happened to maryland?
Digger Phelps is really out to get Baylor.
ReplyDelete(Resisting...)
Just wait until Stanford breaks out the other Lopez brothers, Danny and Jose Jr.
ReplyDeleteMaryland hasn't seemed to have a ton of talent in recent years. I know that Williams usually goes for under the radar guys but he hasn't been as successful finding and/or developing that talent in recent days.

Wow, anybody see the rip job quote from Billy D on the Gators (specifically the freshman class)after yesterday's embarrassing loss? Ouch.
ReplyDeletei dunno - this team has some talent. gist is a huge talent, but soft. vazquez is a huge talent, but an undisciplined nutjob. hayes is talented and has no confidence whatsoever. milbourne, talented, soft. and so on.
ReplyDeleteBilly never should have OK'd the tractor for Ricky Roe.
ReplyDeleteYou take that back TJ. And, I don't want to hear a thing about Tony and point shaving...
ReplyDeleteTony's a good kid. He's a good kid.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little worried about Butch's mom though...she's a handful.
bo ryan, winning ugly. but winning.
ReplyDeletedave odom. not ready to step down just yet.
ReplyDeletepearl, you bully.
ReplyDeletePretty exciting day in the SEC tourney, even with out Florida (sigh). Lofton hits a 25 footer to win it for Tennessee and now Bama rattles home a deep three to send their game against MSU to OT.
ReplyDeleteRick Stansbury's hissy fit after Ben Hansbrough didn't foul and allowed Bama to get the 3 off was priceless.
Jim Rome...Pat Summit...ugh...
ReplyDeleteshe totally turned auriemma in. nice.
ReplyDeleteyeah, so memphis. not fucking around.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, Tyler Hansborough's "dance" after hitting the baseline jumper to beat VaTech may be the whitest celebration by a Caucasian in the history of the sport. Wow.
ReplyDeleteNo way he excels in the NBA. Hibbert will be a much better pro.

ReplyDeleteOK, the UCLA gold "C" is indeed horrendous.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of horrendousness, the scale has been established by the horrendous dress shirt Bobby Knight is wearing underneath his ESPN sweater in the Bristol studio. It's terrible in the way that a paisley dress shirt is terrible, except worse.
ReplyDeleteSince we're talking about horrendous, how 'bout your SEC Tournament final...Georgia vs. Arkansas. There's literally hundreds of people eagerly awaiting this craptastic contest.

ReplyDeleteVery true, but the power conferences wallets won't let that happen sir.
ReplyDeleteIllinois made the Big Ten final? Really? What a shit conference.
ReplyDeleteno doubt, mark, but a girl can dream.
ReplyDeleteand speaking of big conference wallets, what are the chances that big 10 and sec honchos made quiet visits to bo ryan and john pelphrey this morning?
ReplyDeleteIts weird to me that Pelphrey looks exactly the same as he did when Laetnner stuck it to hom 16 yrs ago. Does the man not age?
ReplyDeleteIts nice of CBS to replay last year's National Title game. At least I can pretend that Florida is in the tournament.
ReplyDeleteSo Oglesby on Clemson is the new Lee Humphrey, right?
ReplyDeleteAnd Temple's coach is the old Penn coach?
ReplyDeleteHe has Alex Dillard range.
ReplyDeleteYes and yes.
ReplyDeleteYa know, running commercials for Chik-Fil-A on sundays is just plain wrong...
ReplyDeleteThis ACC final is fantastic thus far...its even better sans Vitale and his histrionics.
ReplyDeleteThe G-man calls a good game...and wears hurting ties.
ReplyDeleteoff to my daughter's birthday party - try to hold down the fort without me.
ReplyDeleteI am watching Varsity Blues at commercial breaks...man I love this movie.
ReplyDeleteOK, so he might be a robotic stiff, but I have to give Hansbrough credit for his sticktuitiveness. Its a shame he looks like such a douche.
ReplyDeleteDemontez, not a name.
ReplyDeleteSom guy who looks like TJ (read: painfully pale) is in the Texas-Kansas game for the Longhorns. Not surprisingly, he's out there to foul.
ReplyDeleteThis, by the way, has been one hell of a game.
georgia? wtf? nice conference you got there, mark.
ReplyDeleteCan you seed Georgia as a 14?
ReplyDeleteWhy is Nantz making faces?
ReplyDeleteUh oh, you guys see who the unlucky bubble team is in the upper right hand corner? Yep, Baylor...
ReplyDeleteThat sort of emotional response is awesome.
ReplyDeletedrake is a 5-seed?
ReplyDeleteSettle down Digger...settle down.
ReplyDeleteAren't you a Bama fan Rob? Right, its my conference.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, mid-majors get screwed on seedings. Butler is much, much better than a 7 seed.
Um, didn't Baylor get in teej?
ReplyDeletebama football, yes. bama hoops, not so much.
ReplyDeletelove that baylor got in - that's an amazing turnaround for scott drew and that program. don't love that the mvc and the caa got shut out. at least arizona state didn't make it.
VCU wasn't even among those listed as a bubble team that was denied. A very bad year for the CAA, if the intent was to land multiple teams in the big tourney. A good year if unforeseen uprisings and upsets are your bag.

ReplyDeleteand jay bilas just picked all 4 top seeds into the final four. brilliant and nuanced evaluation.
sorry, so did digger. jesus fucking christ, somebody grow a pair.
ReplyDeletehey, hubert picked a 2 in addition to 3 top seeds. kudos for your originality, mr. davis.
ReplyDeleteknight with pitt in the final game. iconoclastic bastard.
ReplyDeleteand because i know you care, my official bracket entry for money has louisville, kansas, stanford, and ucla in the final four, with ucla beating louisville for the nets. no chance whatsoever that happens.
ReplyDelete
