Goodbye, Mr. Gibbs

There's an AP report that our lord and savior his majesty the Joe Gibbs will be resigning as coach and team president of our beloved Washington Redskins. I think it's a perfect way, a perfect time for him to step down after rallying the troops the way he did this turbulent year. But I'm a tiny bit bummed. He is, after all, Joe Gibbs.

It didn't play out how we'd hoped, but I think I speak for all of us when I say . . . you were always better than Norv, Coach.

Say what you will about Joe Gibbs, but nothing in the sequel stint could ruin Skins' fans adoration of this icon. One of the greats.

I'll probably not live to see another time when the hiring of a coach has giddy bedlam permeating throughout the streets of the nation's capital and a full-force happy hour starting city-wide at 2 PM on a Wednesday in January.

(Actually, that latter part was written into District law when Marion Barry was mayor.)

The question of who succeeds him races to the forefront, but for today, it's not that pressing. A 21-gun salute seems a fitting send-off, given the events of this season.

I find the only way to deal with it is to assume Dan Snyder had a clone made, and that this never was actually Joe Gibbs. Try it, I think you'll like it. It explains all the terrible sound bites we get from him...programmed language on an algorithmic loop.

The theory parlays nicely into my tremendous sense of denial that generally gets me through most days...like
