Not In The Face

In between trips to Kirwan's (a top-notch Irish pub in DC's Wharf district), several Gheorghies took in what turned out to be a historic rugby match between our Eagles and the All Blacks of New Zealand. Historic, in the sense that the Eagles scored two tries - the first time the U.S. has dented the All Blacks' try zone.

Right before the opening kickoff, Dave asked me how long I thought the match would remain competitive. "Six minutes," I responded.

The All Blacks had other ideas, taking the opening kick and scoring a try in 28 seconds. And that was about that. New Zealand was remarkable, and it was a privilege to see the world's best do their thing. Some highlights follow:

Rugby's on the come up in America, and the match was both a celebration of that fact and an object lesson in how much work is still to be done.

The whole day, though, was a reminder of how important and fulfilling fellowship twixt old friends can be. Can't wait to do it again.

Good for you guys.

My 12 y/o is doing rec basketball. Just started. We got the schedule. He has practice from 7-830 every Monday. Sounded suboptimal, until I learned the facility is ~5 mins from my favorite watering hole in the area. As it’s 15 mins from our house, so going back home doesn’t make sense. That will work.

very underrated side benefit of an otherwise drudgery of a chore. before my daughter got her license, we had a 25-minute one-way drive to her cheer gym for a several hour practice. but there's a great brewery in the same industrial park. evened it out quite a bit.

Geno Smith finally helping the Jets. Not that we will draft well in 2022.

This exchange was bizarre and untrue and offensive:

Jets, coach Robert Saleh, in his weekly spot on The Michael Kay Show on ESPN radio, had an interesting comment on Bill Belichick running up the score. "It's the NFL, it's not like Alabama vs William & Mary," he said. "It's the NFL. We're all professional athletes. If you don't want to get scored on, you gotta stop ‘em. Is it something I would do? Probably not, but to each his own." When Kay cracked that he's seen Alabama run it up against W&M, Saleh replied, "Same tree."

Not sure what to make of all this awfulness for my alma mater and my NFL team.

Rob, back to your question on the last post. Yes, there were pitchers of margaritas Saturday night.
