On the topic of the Mike's Murder Soundtrack...

I did not know there was a movie called Mike's Murder, or that Joe Jackson did the soundtrack. But I did know all about the Joe Jackson moment in pop music about 35 years ago.

A few months ago, I coincidentally found myself googling Joe Jackson's Steppin' Out video. It almost made my head explode. His pasty face that was better-suited for radio, the bizarre video, the song that still holds up, etc. There's a lot to unpack.

But my favorite discovery from listening to that song again might be that when Joe comes in for certain vocals, his inflection sounds a lot like Will Ferrell's when he's doing his Harry Caray impersonation. Am I crazy, or is there something to that?

I'm a Joe Jackson fan. The shoeful one. Maybe enough for a Six-Pack of recommended tunes sometime. The whole Look Sharp! album is strong.

Have not seen Mike's Murder. Mr KQ - worth a watch?

Have a soft spot for Joe Jackson. In my former life as a newspaper keyboard jockey, he kept me awake many late nights traveling from Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill back to Newport News/the Peninsula on Route 58 along the bottom of the state after covering ACC football and hoops. Before Route 58 was expanded to a four-lane divided highway, the stretch between Suffolk and Emporia was known as Suicide Strip. Even had a big, painted wooden Grim Reaper at one end warning folks. Frightening stretch if you were the least bit drowsy or disengaged. Look Sharp and I'm The Man were among my go-to cassettes on that drive. Graham Maby was an underrated bassist. Listen to some of his runs on those two discs, and later. And Jackson's Jumpin' Jive, his big band tribute, is better than it had any right to be. Some of Night and Day, and Big World holds up remarkably well, IMHO.

Really good call on Maby, so many of the tunes have killer base runs. Just noticed it in You Can't Get What You Want. Awesome guitar lead in there as well with horns thrown in. It's all over Jumpin Jive. Saw them last summer at Wolftrap. Without a doubt the tightest sounding show I've ever seen. Piano, drums, bass, and guitar all mixed perfectly. Joe is such a sound snob but the payoff is huge. Highly recommend if they come to a town near you. Read the back cover of Body and Soul for some over the top geek sound stuff. They recorded in an ancient Masonic Lodge in NYC. Got big sound out of the stone and wood. Neuman M-50 microphones 15 feet in the air. 3M 32-track Digital Recording System. 3M DMS-81 4 track. It's all ball bearings these days.

Know nothing about the movie Whit, just heard Weasel tell me about the tunes on HFS back in the day.

I assume that TJ and perished in the latest snowmageddon. Glad to see Rob survived. I’m sure we’ll lose some other members of the G:TB family in this continued long winter for you all.

also, lebron james is a goddamn basketballing genius. i would argue that he’s vastly underrated. watching him in the fourth quarter against the raptors tonight was like watching art being made. that dude, man.

If only someone could think of a fest or something to bring people together?

Gheorghefest! Every four years on February 29th.

If one were to find themselves in VA around Easter, how would one find a fresh can or two of Aslin? Without waiting in line or shoveling someone's driveway. Signed lazy traveler.

So mini-summit at Mr KQ's on Easter weekend. Who is in?

Speaking of mini-summits, ‘twas a good day in Chatham, NJ. Ian (better known as the Power Zapper in some circles) headed to the burbs when his flight home from NYC was canceled. Zman, me and Juan Carlos had lunch w/ him. Later that night, Juan Carlos, me and him enjoyed an abnormally large amount of brown liquor after 9 PM, retelling old stories we had each already heard several times.

Given I am now unemployed, the OBFT trip seems intriguing.
