NCAA Saturday & UVA Lost to UMBC Open Thread

No analysis. No commentary. Just Al McGuire dancing after the 1996 west regional final.  Why?   Because, Al McGuire.

Can we have a sidebar about the names of these CBS shows they keep promoting?
Superior Donuts and Living Biblically?
Who are the people watching these shows?

Ted Cruz ruins Princeton's cache.

i just love the campus, z. i’d like to have a reason to come visit more often.

Mark said...

My niece took a visit there. I didn’t realize Princeton had a train stop that connected to NY and Philly. That’s pretty cool.

now i’m in...trenton!

zman said...

Shlara you should check out J Dilla Donuts.

I went to a local St Patrick’s street party with the intent to get drunk this afternoon. Even set up a sleepover for my kid so the wife and I could do it guilt free. We got there and it was so crowded that both of us were immediately over it.

We left within an hour and no drinks consumed. Came home and took a nap. We’re so damn old and boring. The nap was really nice though.

Mark, some festival you took us to?

Mark said...

Yes sir. It was a shit show today. Way more crowded than usual. We did hit Mustard’s Last Stand for lunch beforehand though.

there’s a dance competition being held at the hotel i’m staying in. it’s jersey as a motherfucker up in here.

I just had the chat w/ my kid that he has been demoted from the A team in his travel soccer club to the B team. Was warranted, given he refuses to have a growth spurt, but seeing your kid’s eyes well up w/ tears as he processes being demoted is a tough moment.

rob said...

this won’t make him feel better, but what team he plays on now means fuck all in terms of what kind of player he’s going to become. we place way too much emphasis on a, b, c, whatever for young players, when they all develop at different rates.

TR said...

I hope that’s true. He is very focused on tackle football, which we are gonna let him play. He wants to be a lockdown CB. I explained to him that 5th grade football teams pass on <5% of offensive plays, but he’s still focused on being the best white CB since Sehorn.

Mark said...

That sucks and I feel for both you and your child, TR. Nobody tells you how heartbreaking being a parent can be.

To Rob’s point, I didn’t start on JV as a sophomore in high school. I was a captain and second team all conference player as a senior. Then I played in college for a couple years. Because I finally grew a little and I worked my ass off. Hope this lights a fire for your boy.

Keenan Evans is rising high on my list of favorite Keenans. Still below Keenan Thompson and James Maynard Keenan, but now above Keenan Cahill and Keenan Allen.

I was cut from my 7th grade soccer team and my 8th grade soccer team, but made my varsity team as an 11th grader. I still keep the faces of those coaches in my memory, thinking of them whenever I want motivation.

zman said...

Keenan Ivory Wayans? Keenan McCardell?

I love everything about Arcade Fire performing Creature Comfort during their first song, including their Sha Na Na suits.

TR said...

Holy shit Jordan Poole! Helluva tourney so far.

Mark said...

The tourney has been quite fun so far. Florida’s loss bummed me out. Not because I had any designs on this particular team going very far but because I hate seeing the end of Chris Chiozza’s career. I love that guy.

Another random note. At the 5th anniversary of Trillium Brewery. Only 160 folks here.

Why dropping this info. Drinking an imperial stout called Affogato. Had to try in honor of the tiny dictator.

Slight humble brag.

zman said...

We got a Shake Shack!

TR said...

Where is the Shake Shack?

TR said...

For some reason, buying tix to a 5 PM Isles-Hurricanes game at Barclays center seemed like a good idea a few weeks ago. Now that it is approaching, and the two teams are comfortably in 11th and 12th place in the Eastern conference, it seems like less of a fun idea. Only solace is the seats are good and were pretty cheap.

Mark said...

Barclays Center is a cool spot but that drive on a Sunday evening seems suboptimal.

zman said...

Corner of Rt 10 and Eisenhower Tpk in Livingston.

zman said...

Also by the Shake Shack is a Container Store (zwoman lives it, I do not) and an allegedly quite strong pizzeria.

zman said...

UMBC never registered "Retrievers" as a US trademark? Not a strong factoid for their Office of the General Counsel.

rob said...

so we're assured of either duke or syracuse making the regional final. neat. thanks for nothing, sparty.

mr kq said...

In a square pool for March Madness. Action every game. Winning team 6 losing team 5. Just won a 50 spot on UNC going out game. Double bonus.

rob said...

oooh, that’s fun.

less fun is kentucky not having to play a seed lower than 7 on the way to the final four.

rob said...

so while we’re all focused on the college game, the nba western conference is bonkers. the 3-10 places are separated by 5.5 games. the 5-8 teams all have identical 40-30 records.

mr kq said...

Rob you ever get any more Aslin? Enjoying a few leading into this battle of WV. UMBC hanging tough.

rob said...

my neighborhood friends and i keep trying to schedule a trip to aslin, but we’re struggling with calendar coordination. i need to just go.

mr kq said...

Still to-go only. Tasting room opening downtown Herndon Mayish. Or just stop by, I've always got it. The beer too.

a customer wanted to meet at the starbucks in trump’s dc hotel today. thank god there’s a separate entrance.

my buddy, who is a varsity coach now but once coached middle school soccer, got a rather crazy paranoid email last month from a player he cut a decade ago. that kid never forgot his face, and believed there was a serious conspiracy to keep him off the team. sports don't build character, they reveal it.

zman said...

Trump hired another lawyer, Joe diGenova, to represent him in some his myriad problems relating to Russia, the election, Stormy Daniels, etc. By my count he now has seven "lead" attorneys working for him--Jay Sekulow, Ty Cobb, Michael Cohen, John Dowd, Marc Kasowtiz, and Emmet Flood--as well as their probable armies of counsel and associates. You know you're in trouble when you need seven different firms to represent you in your personal capacity.

According to the NY Times, a former Playboy Playmate is suing a media company that bought her story about having an affair with Donald Trump because they never published the story. The CEO of the media company is allegedly friends with Trump and his name is David J. Pecker. Because of course it is.
