GTB Reviews the 2016 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class

We caught up with GTB's own Whitney this morning to get his take on the recently-announced Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2016. The conversation was, as you might imagine, marked by erudition and insight. Or insults.

lazy? i had to take 7 different images from my phone and then do some editing. not to mention text while driving. this post was fraught with fucking peril, man.

Clarence said...

Laziest comment I've ever seen, Teej.

I can't remember whether we've posted this here before, but it makes me smile.
(It won't if you aren't familiar with The Smiths. In which case, I still love you, only slightly less than I used to...)

Peanuts / The Smiths

rob said...

we have, but it's still great

I like the post, so there ya go.

Martin Shkreli, who was mentioned here previously, was arrested for securities fraud along with a partner at Kaye Scholer. I don't know how he'll hold up in federal prison, but at least he has that Wu-Tang album to keep him warm.

TR said...

That album may be good collateral to keep his anus from being overly plunged by felons.

I haven't been around here much since my return from Peru (Cocaine is a helluva drug and all that) but I thoroughly enjoyed Danimal's post and I actually quite like this one too.

I'd volunteer for any free Gheorghemas days but Greg is coming into town tomorrow so I'm pretty sure I'll be too busy avoiding my family and being hammered. Speaking of Greg, he went up to a village in the Amazon after our stay in Lima. His time there sounds...interesting, to say the least. Maybe the Teej can get him to write a guest post about it.

T.J. said...

luckily, Greg speaks Hovitos

Throw me idol I throw you the whip, no time to argue.

rob said...

down goes mourinho

zman said...

I have laryngitis, by the way. My phone call to make an appointment to see the doctor was almost completely futile.

Danimal said...

the teaser on the amazon village trip was effective. must have that.

zman said...

I ... I don't even know what to say about this.

I had forgotten that The Cars were a nominee. Oft overlooked. I much, much prefer their music to that of the selections made. Their first album has about as many bona fide classics as most of these other acts' Greatest Hits albums. Revisit The Cars' catalog.

In order:
Let's Go
Just What I Needed
Bye Bye Love
You're All I've Got Tonight
Moving in Stereo
Good Times Roll
Since You're Gone
It's All I Can Do
My Best Friend's Girl
Shake It Up
Dangerous Type
Touch and Go
Hello Again
I'm Not the One
Tonight She Comes
Cruiser
Magic
You Might Think
Drive

rob said...

how are the cars not already in?

Dave said...

wow. cars are awesome. "since you're gone" made my best songs of all time list. chicago and steve miller have defiled the rr hall of fame. now that they are in, i will speak for random idiots, and say we are pleased to be left out.

Shkreli is a real scumbag. The medical opportunism aside, his view of the legal system is nauseating. The idea that he can bail somebody out of jail, buy a not guilty verdict, and then make said person a fucking indentured servant in order to satisfy his own adolescent hip hop mogul fantasy is revolting. Fuck him.

Marls said...

His whole "I'm the most successful Abanian to ever walk the face of the Earth" is comical. Way to set the bar low, notwithstanding the fact that Ataturk and Mother Teresa might challenge his assessment.

rob said...

shkreli reminds me of ziggy sobotka, both physically and in terms of his desperate striving to get over on the system. things didn't end well for ziggy.

TR said...

Shkreli looks like one of the dudes from Andy Samberg's Lonely Island posse.

TR said...

I really dislike the song You Might Think. The special effects in that video held up as well as the effects in the original Clash of the Titans.

It almost makes me not feel bad for accidentally exhaling after a stealth papal election onto his 10 y/o son at a French café in Soho one NY Eve, where a group of us ended up sitting at a table next to Ric, Paulina, his kids and a nanny. Paulina still had her fastball. And he is taller, skinnier and paler than you would think in person.

Cars are okay, but not really HoF material. Nor are most of the bands that got in this year.

Clarence said...

Deciding who is RnR "HoF material" is tremendously subjective -- if it's not, it's because you use the metric of who's gotten in so far, and by that standard, The Cars are worthy.

This is not the Baseball HoF. RnR inducts many more per year and don't have as rigid an entry process. Nor do they need to. As time goes on, it may be harder to justify putting bands alongside The Beatles and The Clash, but it's all in good fun. And there is no WAR or OPS+ in rock and roll. There are album sales, but if we as a people induct musicians into the Hall of Fame based on sales, I will vomit and boycott the whole endeavor.

Grammy nominations came out last week. Vomit. Boycott.

zman said...

The Ziggy analogy is perfect. I assume Shkreli's dad will thus end up fathering fairies in a land of vampires.

Mark said...

I'm guessing most of you haven't been paying much attention to the happenings at Texas A&M of late. Well, let me catch you up. The two 5 star QB recruits that Kevin Sumlin signed the past two years have both announced their intention to transfer within the past week. This after the starting QB from the beginning of last season transferred at the end of that season. Sumlin may wish he took that job at USC when it was offered. It's a pretty dramatic fall for Sumlin if he has another average year and ends up getting canned.

Also, the Rams and Bucs jerseys are hurting my eyes.

zman said...

It's like ketchup vs mustard.

Marls said...

Mustard is fisting ketchup.

Mark said...

Stupid fucking Bucs.

TR said...

If you're watching NFL over LBJ v. KD, you're making a sub-optimal decision.

And the heads of hair on Fratello/Albert are fanfuckingtastic.

Clarence said...

Frat/Albert?

Clarence said...

And mustard is way better than ketchup all the time.

Mark said...

I have two TV mounted on my living room wall, TR. I'm watching both. But I agree with your statement nonetheless.

I also agree with Clarence's statement.

TR said...

Bron Bron just mowed down Jason Day's wife/mistress, who was unfortunately sitting front row. They took her out on a backboard, which showed off her leather pants and heathy cleavage. Too bad he didn't mow down and hurt Johnny Manziel, who's also sitting front row.

Marls said...

Just read the NY times article on Shkreli's arrest. He lived in Murray Hill. The most powerful Albanian to ever walk the earth and the self proclaimed most eligible bachelor in NY lives in Murray Hill. Hahahahahahahaha. What a douchenozzle.

Dave said...

buenas noches gheorghes

you can't judge a band by its worst song, tr. the cars are totally rr hall of fame material-- their best songs are WAY better than chicago and steve miller band's best songs.

Marls said...

Hi Dave

Danimal said...

Anyone else here less interested than I in Star Wars?

I hope Mrs.Day is OK. I picture her wearing a hospital gown right now which on her is kinda hawt.

TR said...

Maybe Martin loves JAPs, Marls. That's kinda ground zero for 20-something ones living in luxury apartments their parents pay for.

And I'm with you on Star Wars, Danimal. My two boys have no shits to give either. I suppose I'll take them at some point over Winter Break, but may not. Too many 35+ y/o nerds are fired up. I don't know of any kids excited.

zman said...

I think those pants were just shiny leggings and not leather, but I agree on your conclusions regarding her cleavage.

rob said...

speaking of you being a bunch of unrepentant pervs, where is day 6.9?

TR said...

way to kill the surprise for our ones of readers!

NLT Saturday morning.

Clarence said...

Without googling, what year was the College Delly founded?

TR said...

1693?

Clarence said...

1969. Never knew that. I knew I always liked a place for some reason.

rob said...

sesaons's greetings, gheorgies, you magnificent bastards

Dave said...

my son is watching all six star wars at a friend's house this weekend. they started this morning, break for basketball practice, and then continue into a sleepover. apparently, the mom is participating as well.

Dave said...

the rotten tomatoes reviews are actually quite good. still have no desire to see it, and i'm sad that "in the heart of the sea" got panned-- i loved that book.

Clarence said...

People who love Moby Dick suck.

zman said...

In the heart of the sea is a great book, Moby Dick inspirations notwithstanding, but I don't see how it translates into a 90 minute movie. I saw Star Wars yesterday with a neighbor who is really into the franchise. The new one doesn't make a ton of sense in light of the original three. Adam Driver is the wimpiest Force expert ever. Ultimately it's a movie for kids so you can't expect consistency.
