Norfolk, Off

As we prepare ourselves for the most magical of Gheoghie holidays, a little mirth and genuine absurdity to tide us over.

The Norfolk Tides have a long and storied history. The current Orioles' AAA affiliate, and long the partner of the New York Mets, the Tides began play in 1961. They've won the International League five times, and seen such future stars as Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Amos Otis, David Wright, and Lenny Dysktra wear their colors.

Those colors were great, too., especially in recent years. A distinctive blue on blue, nodding to the Tides' nautical name and seagoing home region. Their logo, a cresting wave, was both classic and classy.

News comes out of Tidewater today that changes all that. The Norfolk Tides will wear this garbage next year:

From the mishmash of bright green and orange, to the cartoon character seahorse, to the on-trend and off-putting camouflage, this entire ensemble is disgusting. The Tides have traded a clean, dignified look for something barfed out of a child's fever dream.

And it says here that they're cursed to never win another Governor's Cup until they renounce this nonsense.

Gheorghemas can't come fast enough.

This doesn't bother me, although I think the camo trend is goofy. Minor league teams need to stir up interest and revenue somehow, and if this gets all the elementary school boys in Tidewater excited to rock Tides gear then good for all those involved.

your take is invalid, z, and causes me to call into question all of your opinions.

You're just salty because you wanted to get a seahorse tattoo and now you're worried it will make you look like a Tides fan, right?

The old Tides uni's weren't all handsome.

nailed it

Rob, you've attended more Tides games than most minor league teams, right? Who have you seen more? I believe you worked for the Prince William club, so that's one. PawSox?

never seen a pawsox game, so it's not them. definitely seen more prince william cannons. probably seen more frederick keys and myrtle beach pelicans, too. that's about it.

Syracuse Chiefs and Louisville Bats unveiled new logos this offseason as well. Both better than the Tides'.

I went to a Tidewater Tides game during the Strawberry era as an outing from family beach week. I drank one of those gigantic sodas and on the way out traffic hit a dead stop. When nature called my dad handed me that giant cup and I still remember how perilously close to overflowing it was.

If you like Carolina League action, Lumpy's family has legacy season tickets to the Salem Red Sox. Come on down and we'll see if we can put that deal in jeopardy!

I went to a a Tides game when I was in summer school in the Burg one year. Fun times--not sure I saw much of the game.

And Bull Durham was on HBO the other day---that's more rom-com than a baseball movie for sure, which is not how I remembered it. Still don't like Kevin Coster--that hasn't changed in 20 years.

An uncle took me to see the Syracuse Chiefs and another team....did Rochester have a squad? And saw me some Mookie Wilson. Was a young buck.
Same uncle let me try chewing tobacco, intending fully to teach me a lesson. It backfired.

Random question of the week: what the hell is Tom Green doing these days?

Danimal said...

Also...Louisville game in 2010. Nice park. And of course the Jacksonville suns. They have cheerleaders.

Tom and his one ball have an interview show on (I think) the AXS TV channel. Not sure what his pal Glenn is up to.

Bonkers ending to GB DET. The guy who tackled Rodgers by the facemask is a massive goat.

And GB covered. Unreal.
