Citius, Altius, Drunkius: Continuing Coverage

In addition to a huge (in the sense that any W&M December hoops game can be huge) game tomorrow evening between the Wrens and Richmond, there's another athletic event of interest to true sportsmen and women.

Several months ago, we told you about James Nielsen's world record-breaking 4:57 beer mile.

Tomorrow, the beer miling community goes one better. At 7:45 pm (I'm assuming that's Central time) in Austin, TX, the gun sounds for the first-ever Men's Elite Beer Mile World Championship.

Nielsen remains the world record holder, but two Canadians and two Australians have each run within 20 seconds of the American's mark. U.S. Olympian Nick Symmonds, who's posted a 5:19 time, is among the confirmed entrants in the Elite race (though, interestingly, Nielsen is not). Canadian Corey Gallagher (with a 5:01.57 PR) leads a field with 9 sub-5:25 beer milers.

At 7:25, the Elite Women's race goes off, and includes world record-holder Chris Kimbrough (6:28.55) and Seanna Robinson, the first woman to ever complete an official beer mile.

If you'd like to play the home version, just run around your house and drink a beer every 90 seconds or so while the races are going on. Please take videos.

On the list of acceptable beers for the Beer Mile, they have Bud Dry and Bud Ice. (Bud Light, at only 4.2% ABV, does not qualify.) Do they still make Bud Dry and Bud Ice?

I enjoy this rule: "Competitors who vomit before they finish the race must complete one penalty lap at the end of the race."

I have run two "beer miles". One with the penalty lap and one without. They are not fun.

That said, I would be up for bringing this event to Leesburg in the spring. A G:TB Beer Mile Invitational would be good times.

Bud Dry was retired in 2010. On the other hand, Bud Ice is alive and kicking.

My buddy at Leesburg Public House would prob get involved. He's got the good shit.

This is likely recycling a prior discussion where I tried to convince Rob he had gout, but want a diagnosis. I am having a constant throb in my inner ankle (on the "ball" of the ankle) that hurts to touch, gets worse through the day and swells up if I'm on my feet. I recently went from running 0 miles to running about 4-5 miles five times a week, and I am a large man. Does this sound like the recipe for a stress fracture? I thought it was something else, stayed off of it for 3 weeks, felt better, then went running two days ago and it has come back.

Could just be over-use. Change up the running by adding in some sprint work and maybe some cycling and ice bath your foot for 20 min.

could be scurvy. eat more citrus.

but cycling is a good idea, too.

I suggest adding peanut butter to your drawers during your runs.

dammit, now a large part of me is rooting for ohio state to wax wisconsin this weekend just to see the chaos that ensues when the committee chooses the buckeyes over fsu for the final slot. thanks for nothing, committee.

Turns out I have a hairline fracture in my heal and another HF in the medial malleolus bone in my ankle. I'm in the shop for several weeks minimum, may try to take up cycling after all.

Reading the Grantland interview with Chris Rock made me regain at least some confidence that he is still funny. I'm still not seeing any of his new stuff until he formally apologizes for his role in Adam Sandler movies.

I meant to reply to your diagnosis question yesterday but didn't get around to it.
I would guess that your Dr. told you that going from 0 miles per week to a sudden 15-20 was a terrible idea. Hopefully upon recovering you will get back into it starting with 1-2 mile runs 2-3 days per week and building up from there. Lastly, it also sounds like you might want to go to a real running shoe store and have them recommend some shoes specific to your gait. And lastly, lastly, did the Doc say cycling/spinning would be okay w/a fractured bones in your foot?

i'm the last thing from a legal expert, but i find it really hard to understand how it makes sense for a cop who choked a guy to death to not even have to stand trial. not even a trial. profoundly sad. we're a fucked up place.

A cop who choked a guy to death on camera. It's stunning. Hopefully the feds can do something more.

Watching Arsenal-Southampton at a pub in London. Southampton's cameo as a top performing team league appears over. Arsenal is controlling the match. A goal appears inevitable. An Arsenal win is good for Man U, but it's hard to want any result that makes Arsene Wenger happy.

A guy came in and yelled for Southampton. Another guy angrily yelled "Shut up, you fucking wanker" without any irony. I need to bring that phrase into my insult rotation.

If anything it was a massive indication I am old and brittle, Danimal. I have been a distance runner not too recently, and my ego got the better of me. And I was kidding about cycling - Somebody bring me a Baconator instead.

Ian Darke is doing the match on BT Sport Network. No offense to Arlo White, but Ian is the tits.
