As some of you are aware, I was fortunate enough to embark on an unusual seven-day sports odyssey in late August. Over a span of seven days, I went to three different "major" sporting events (using the phrase liberally) in three different states. Two were for work, in different cities, and on somebody else's dime. These events were: Panthers at Jets in an NFL exhibition game on Sunday August 26th, Cardinals at Pirates on Wednesday August 29th and Alabama vs. Michigan in Dallas on Saturday September 1st.
As a fan of all live sports, especially those in new stadiums, I was pretty excited for these events. In retrospect, it turned out to be a less dynamic odyssey than expected. I left the exhibition game before halftime because my 5 y/o and 3 y/o boys were starting to fall apart from the 8 PM start time. I saw little of the Pirates game because we were parked at the bar in the stadium, feeding free booze to a disgruntled group of guys who reconcile working in Pittsburgh by getting violently wasted and being very appreciative that folks come to visit them in that town. I did see a lot of a pretty bad football game in Dallas, but that experience was more tied into soaking in my first major college football game (I'm excluding Rutgers-Louisville), seeing Jerry Jones' impressive palace in Arlington, and pondering what life would have been like had I attended an SEC school for college.
So not any "memories of a lifetime" from this sojourn. Except one. As I was walking into MetLife stadium before the Jets game, a young Latina woman ran up to me. She told me she randomly took a picture of me and my sons on her cell phone because she thought it would be a cool shot. She thought it turned out well and wanted to send it to me. Her boyfriend was with her and they both were genuinely happy to do this. I note that this is extremely abnormal behavior in East Rutherford.
So I gave the woman my cell phone and two minutes later, a photo appeared. It turned out that I did have a memory of a lifetime after all.

that is very cool
mark, what do you know about doomtree?
A wise Latina.
Expect to see a similar photo of me getting a piggyback ride in a later post. Foot surgery sucks.
That is an AWESOME pic.
Words uttered to Sanchez in approx 5 hours?
That's a beaut Clarke.
I've heard some of the first album. one of the founding members (POS) toured with Atmosphere (also from Minneapolis) and I got to see him live right after his solo debut dropped. Doomtree has a pretty different style. Definitely hip hop but some genuine punk influences. Haven't heard the latest album.
What did you do to your foot, Z?
Hey, Rob -- good luck to you today. May the worse team win.
Gabbert about to take the field. He is all in.
indeed, clarence. my prevalent early emotion: ambivalence.
Magic Hat out with another Variety Pack. I'm a lifer.
this is an impressive, if simple, skins drive
that play was less impressive. griffin looks small.
Gabbert showing quarterback-like qualities. Yeah I know it's early.
that was a sick catch by graham. not fair at all for london fletcher.
and a sick grab by garcon in response
saints seeming very redskinny with all these drops and false starts. maybe i was the problem.
Wife at bday party w 2 kids. Other napping. Daddy drinking in solitude. And Blaine Gabbert is going to get picked up by some peeps this week.
happy (?) to report that the colston fumble pissed me off
jeez, mike vick
you skins fans are gonna be insufferable if this lead stands up
I really wish Zman was on twitter so I could see his bitter Bills based rants.
Also, the wife has taken to the two children to her friends photography studio for pictures this afternoon. It's just me, my two two living room and ALL THE FOOTBALL.
well now, danimal
Yes. Wow. Not over though.
Did you wake the baby with your excited scream on that Gabbert TD, Dan? That was a heck of a throw and perhaps an even better catch. I gave it a fist pump and I could care less about the Jags.
What a fuckin throw and catch that was.
No mark..have learned to contain myself. Waking baby equals pain
Fuck me
Rob...how ya feeling? Really.
nonplussed, danimal
oh, boy
well that's not good
dagger yes but haven't felt good about a loss ever while following this team. until today.
It seems like the Jags have a good young core group of players. Gabbert looked much better during the preseason and it carried over to today. You've got to be worried about that offensive line though.
this started well
Thank you, Rob. No way does this game turn out like that if you don't bail on the Skins.
The Saints might be a really bad team. Brees did not look like Brees - a lot of throws short and throws behind. He looked more like Donovan McNabb.
The Redskins offense obviously looked completely different. It was like Kyle Shanahan just borrowed a spread playbook for the week. Some very cromulent playcalling and some veteran choices made by RGIII. The throw deep on 4th and 1 was a great decision - nothing short, not going to get anything anyway, so take a shot. And it worked out as well as it could have.
That said, it's hard to see how RGIII is going to play anywhere near a full season. A lot of Vick-iness (Vicktitude?) in how he plays, and we know how that has worked out for Mike the last couple of years. RGIII runs a lot and when he's not running the line is not decent enough to keep him from getting put on his seat more often than not.
i think that's pretty clear. glad i could deliver some happiness.
Ryan Fitzpatrick is very hiphop in that he's much worse live. Hes the opposite of Dominique Wilkins, he's the human lowlight reel. Tons of awful throws. I have to find out how badly Fred Jackson is hurt.
And my left knee is sunburnt to hell.
The Redskins have not scored 40 points in a game since the 2005 season.
The Packers got a little overconfident at the end of the first half - taking a timeout with less than a minute left in the half on their own 18 (or thereabouts). Ended up costing them.
Peyton w/the Peter Millar ensemble.
TR--this photo is darling.
I think Peyton took is wearing every rib protector in the locker room. Or he's gained 40 pounds.
Bills officials think David Nelson has a torn ACL. Look at what you did Zman!!!!
'twas not my intention. Barnwell is already writing 1000 words about Pitt generating TOs.
Wesley Woodyard's name is strong.
