18 Years Ago Yesterday...

With his team down three games to two, desperate to win a Stanley Cup for the first time in 54 years, Big Balls Messier made this bold prediction:

As some may remember, the Rangers did indeed win Game 6...then Game 7 as welll, eventually winning the Cup.

Jerry sent this Friday filler to us, and as a Rangers fan I'm sure this evening was a seminal moment in young Flantzini's life. Hell, I even skipped my senior prom to watch Game 7 of this series.

Matteau, Matteau, MaMatteau!!!

Yeah. Let's Go Rangers.

If you think about where you were in 1994, it really makes you realize the impressiveness Martin Brodeur's longevity.

Jerry said...

And yes, I will handle all the comments on this post if necessary.

TR said...

The fact that he followed up his prediction with a natural hat trick is pretty impressive feat. He deserved to have Madonna (insert your sex act here) after that.

It was almost as impressive as Patrick Ewing's guarantee. Oh wait...

1994 = O.J.

TR said...

Chris Chelios is not impressed by Brodeur's longevity.

The Miami P.D. just welcomed me to the city on twitter and told me to have fun, but responsible fun.

Teej, did you skip prom like I skipped the Nobel Peace Prize Awards Ceremony this year? I mean come on.

Jerry said...

He was a different guy in high school - athletic, brilliant, and a bit of a lothario.

Jerry said...

Just like Mark Messier.

zman said...

Jerry, I thought the same thing recently about Brodeur. Ignore TR and Chris Chelios.

zman said...

I think Teedge was more Lotor (think Voltron) than Lothario.

Jerry said...

Being in the same place the whole time makes it more impressive to me.

"Small Wonder" was a TV show we watched in college (hey, we had no cable TV in the house) because it was just so awful that it was entertaining. So bad it's good.

The Grantland dude who watches 1980's shows reviewed "Small Wonder." His review is mediocre and bland, so much so that it's worse than watching Small Wonder, one of the worst television shows ever filmed. It would have been better if it were worse.

I can't believe I'm actually rooting for the Devils in this series. I hate both franchises equally. But Jerry, I'm going to help you out. I hope the Rangers lose because I can't stand Tortorella. He seems like an ass to me. And whoever I root for seem to lose.

Go Devils.

Clarence said...

I'm rooting for the Devils because I'm a big David Puddy fan. The Devillllllllllllls.

rob said...

i'm rooting for the rangers, 'cause fuck squeaky and igor

Clarence said...

We prefer Squeagor

buzzfeed politics has excerpts of david mariniss' new obama book online right now. it's...awesome:

I'm not rooting for either team. Because I'm from Florida and its not even worth pretending I have natural hockey allegiances. I'll watch but only because it's a professional sports playoff game.

Due to changing jobs, I'm (as of a few minutes ago) officially on vacation until June 4th. I, like Rob, planned this sabbatical. Unlike Rob, there's not a chance I'll be writing anything close to his brief "Man, I'm really bored without work" G:TB post.

Mark said...

TJ - You see the Miami police arrested JR Smith last night? Guess he didn't get the twitter message.

rob said...

hockey post gets 25 comments before 1:00 - this is a pretty strong signal about what our audience wants

Mark said...

Or how bored and lazy we all are on the Friday before a 3 day weekend.

rob said...

mark - here's a sabbatical assignment: read the obama link i just posted and provide a review on his pot smoking etiqutte.

TR said...

Is the Obama link inteded to make people like him more or like him less?

I'm in the "like him more" camp because he seemed to be living the movie Dazed and Confused.

rob said...

i believe the link is intended to help sell david maraniss' books. really can't wait for the stoner ads the romney people and superpacs come up with, though. jim breuer's career may get a rebirth.

TR said...

Jim Breuer's alive?

zman said...

Romney will spliff boat him. Or canoe him.

rob said...

you don't get that kind of genius at grantland, friends.

Jerry said...

Rangers.

Dave said...

in other exciting sporting news, i went for a jog this morning, despite my beer and late night food hangover.

Jerry said...

I lika Michael Del Zotto...he plays the hockey and he eats the pasta. His cousin a-came to the Carnivale Italiano. I gota his autograph and told him to banga my sister.

Clarence said...

Is that a North Brunswick slag? I love it. It's one I my favorite recurring bits on GTB.

Dave said...

if i had a sister she definitely would have hooked up at the carnivale italiano.

question: did sam malone say that to be a man you had to score heavy with the babes?

i'm working on a song.

rob said...

does the pope shit in the woods?

T.J. said...

Vatican denies all Pope pooping tales.

Shlara said...

I hope the Rangers win. Really enjoyed getting to know the team on 24/7 this year. And Brian Boyle is super-cute.

rob said...

allegedly (always allegedly), mitt romney's favorite book is battlefield earth. if true, shouldn't this disqualify him from public office?

Clarence said...

That is indeed a Sam-ism. One of his classics. Best with his preface: you don't have to do all that macho stuff to prove you're a man. You just have to score heavy with the babes.

Mark said...

Sam Malone was easily my favorite television alcoholic.

rob said...

unexpected neighborhood drunkery is underrated

rob said...

devils. neat. let's go kings.

rob said...

did we know that zach galifinakis has been cast as ignatius j. reilly in the film adaptation of confederacy of dunces?

Dave said...

you can't make that book into a movie. i predict trainwreck.
