Who is Runib Carter? Don't type while feeding a baby.
Getting some rain here in SE VA, but from what they are saying, Irene is getting weaker.
Please let me voice 100% support for Mark's prediction regarding the overblown state of emergency in NYC. They have had Weather Channel mainstay Jim Cantore stationed in Manhattan since Wednesday. Why, again? Storm path predictions are relatively imprecise on an hour-to-hou basis and they have been giving us NYC-based coverage for days.
Anyone else look at the NC governor and see Jack Nicholson as The Joker? That mouth is eerie.
no 'wooderson' tag? so much for our seo strategy.
new york city! we're important! historic storm! did we mention we're important!
Finally, at long last, we are getting some footage of a Weather Channel person in a drenched parka being thrown around by high winds. I am sick of seeing anchors in Ann Taylor outfits in Atlanta or reporters on dry beaches bracing for eventualities. I want people in the eye of the storm. I want employees receiving hazard pay. I want someone with one hand on the mic and one clinging desperately to a tree for survival. Come on, TWC, this is your sweeps week. Get in there.
also! the yankees are getting screwed! how dare the orioles question our hegemony!
We're here live in New York City, where people talking about a possible storm are way more important than people not in New York City getting battered by a hurricane. Here's Jim with the 73 possible storm paths and which one he picked out of a hat as the "projected path," as well as why New Yorkers feel slighted because the storm didn't come to NY first. Two generations of Americans landed at Ellis Island. Not good enough for you, Irene??
kayaking in the subways! dean and deluca is out of espresso! i can't find absinthe anywhere!
Up next on "Storm Stories"... It was bad enough that Glenn and Gloria McMurtry had to evacuate their brownstone and leave the cultural epicenter of the universe. But now we take a closer look at true personal hardship as they endure the pain of not being able to find a decent slice or a real bagel anywhere outside the five boroughs.
we're mingling with suburbanites! with minivans!
Hey, before this overhyped media event called hurricane coverage is over, someone remind me to bring up a lovely co-ed named Irene that one of the G:TB staffers spent time with as an undergrad. Egads.
People in second and 5th tier cities are so cute.
BTW, the only team getting screwed is the mets who had to reschedule their loss to the braves. However, unlike the Yankees, the mets are true new yorkers and are riding out the storm in NYC.
I just bought 3 gallons of water and two sixers of Dales PA. I'm ready.
I went to Duane Reed to get soap, tissues, and some milk. Dude on line ahead of me was about 25 and had two gallon jugs of water and a case of Poland Spring bottles. As if there will be no water in a hurricane. A young woman asked if they had flashlights and all they had were those little lights you clip to your book so you can read in bed, and she said "I'll take it."
I then went to Jumbo Hot Bagels to get breakfast for the zfamily. People were stocking up on bagels, lox, whitefish, and all other forms of nosh. Seriously. It took me 20 minutes to get out of there.
You can get decent slices and bagels outside the city limits, but rob is correct, interacting with people in minivans and SUV's full of kids is tiresome.
I plan to go to the butcher and the Italian store in a bit. I'll let you know if there was a run on veal and sopresetta.
this water thing is insane. fill a few pitchers and water bottles with tap water and you're good to go. if you're really worried, but a few buckets outside and collect rain water.
i just moved a number of giant boulders onto a slope in my backyard to attempt to shore up my new living fence of arbor vitae. lifting giant stones is hard work, i just took three advil and i am DONE with this storm. if the basement floods, my kids are bailing and i'm watching the rest of godfather ii.
Hunkered down. Bloody Mary, sandbags, and the Stones on the juke. "Under my Thumb" from the Hampton, VA show in 1981.
Here in Norfolk: been raining for a while, no flooding yet but it should rain for the next day or so, and we're just a few feet above sea level, so it will. Winds high. Trees are coming down at some point. I parked my car at the ODU parking garage. Where it will probably get broken into.
Dave had a very manly morning. Approaching Joe Namath manliness.
If enough storms form this year, there would be a Hurricane Whitney.
On plane running from storm that never came. Heading to San Francisco in hopes of finding the big one. Insert jokes here.
Where did marls go after getting booted
nothing is more manly than watching godfather II while your family bails water from the basement.
I'm staying with the M-lady about a half mile from the zfamily. Looks like we are going to have a G:TB mini summit, hurricane edition, in case anybody is interested.
just went for a run in the very outer bands of irene (whit, insert flying pan joke here). saw a bunch of park slope refugees with a sign that read, 'will kvetch for water'.
We are meeting on 69th street in case anyone wants to join. Where else would we meet?
And I expected seltzer, not water, to be the bargained-for exchange.
DC local news has their "armageddon" caps on even as they have to continue to downgrade this thing. They haz sadz.
whit, we're watching the weather channel. there's a big-ass storm right over norfolk. thought you might want to know.
Just saw video of moron surfers jumping off a pier into huge waves in Charleston, SC.
Vaya con Dios, indeed.
my daughter saw that same video and said, 'dude, you are *not* surfing'. then she made the shaka handsign.
Zwoman sent me to food emporium. Men in wellies? Fail.
'the day after tomorrow' was real! quaid is a prophet! why the fuck can't i get chinese delivery?!?
the zbaby will tell his grandchildren about the historic storm of '11 someday.
Brad Bell of channel 7 is bringing it. Live from Kill Devil Hills. Go check on the Martha Wood for us.
Thanks, Rob. They have now closed the four bridges and tunnels we would use to evacuate. We are trapped!! Well, technically we could go to NC, if we wanted to hit the eye of the storm.
I'm enjoying Rob and Whitneys comments from the balcony. The only good thing about Irene is more camera time for Rob Marciano on CNN.
And the PGA is really going to keep the Barclays in play today??
did she just drop a statler and waldorf on us, or is she outside in the storm?
She sure did, tiny.
zman, sopresetta is VERY salty. be sure to buy extra bottles of poland spring if you buy some.
dave needed to tag that with #hipsterproblems
Only one bottle of black truffle oil left! No more organic Greek yogurt!
here's that new muppets album: http://www.npr.org/2011/08/14/138984517/first-listen-muppets-the-green-album
that's the spirit, zman.
my kids started their "hurricane" emergency lego sets this morning and alex is about to finish and it hasn't started raining yet. i am screwed.
Seriously tho. I sent the photo to teedge
shlara, did you see your boy jay wright in the katy perry flashmob?
I did see that video Rob...and I think the Nova cheer easing saqud is behind it. Checking my sources on that now
Cheerleading squad.
Stupid iPad self-correcting keyboard
At some point today I'd like Rob & Whitney to go Statler & Waldorf on NYC residents again. That was fun.
I was talking to a buddy of mine yesterday who's a pro surfer. Waves were really good here yesterday (still pretty good today). He went out at Sebastian Inlet yesterday (one of the better east coast breaks) and said a bunch of less experienced surfers got slammed into the jetty by the waves. Multiple helicopter trips were needed to save these people. I said they should've let them drown. Natural selection and all.
Rob: not sure if it's the same daughter or not but based on the Gene Simmons impression and her mock "shaka" sign today, well, she sounds fun. Must have your wife's personality.
Also, the weather channel is blowing it with their coverage. I'm back to watching high school football.
+1, Mark on the daughter comment
And if not balcony impressions, can we at least get some Mortimer and Randolp Duke for rob and whit?
Live streakers on TWC? Can I get confirmation?
I missed it, but I just got a text from a girl I used to work with:
"I just saw a dude flash his wiener on the Weather Channel. Vurginia Beach. Way to represent."
My typo, not hers. Autocorrect can't fix Vurginia??
Connecting in Chicago. Irene touching us here too....extremely windy.
pretty sure that's just the windy city being the windy city, danimal
Thanks Rob. From now on will add "joke" when am trying to make one. Or "weak joke" in this case. Thanks again though.
we're not used to successful comedy from winchestrians. carry on.
tonight at the moth: 'i survived evacuation to hoboken. barely.'
Apparently there are no D batteries left in NYC. Solar powered vibrators are selling like hotcakes.
Losing respect for Jim Cantore. This should be his signature moment and he's in Battery Park talking hypotheticals. He coulda done the Phil Collins Live Aid Concorde extravaganza thing and been live on location in the Bahamas, landfall in NC, here in Norfolk, and each major point along the path as it hits. He coulda driven from Point Lookout in NC all the way up north in the eye at 14mph, sitting in the back of a jeep and yelling up to Irene like Jim Carrey at the end of the Truman Show, "is this all you got??"
Instead he got some tight fitting plain black t-shirts from Banana Republic and spent some time in the Big Apple, where it just might rain in a day or two. Weak.
So I was on the line at Food Emporium behind a family of hipsters from Italy. The wife looks at me and starts throwin back midrange (natch), breaking the ice by looking at my frozen pizzas and noting that they look good. I didn't make a joke like "Girl I know how to pick a pie" and instead said "Yes." She then noted that "You cannot get good pizza here, you must go to Italy for good pizza." Reverse pizza snobbery in midtown!
ATLiens was released 15 years ago today. In related news, I am old.
Let's ease off a bit on the NYC mockery here, folks. The storm is tracking to come very close to the city, and to land at high tide tomorrow morning. Nobody fears high rises toppling, but the residual flooding from 24+ hours of rain and a wind-enhanced tidal surge could foul up thousands of basement apartments, trains, subways and roads. We are 17 hours away from expected landfall and it doesn't look good.
This hasn't happened to the city since 1938. There is some reason to be apprehensive.
Sure ... but I really did see someone grab the second-to-last bottle of black truffle oil, which is an important condiment to have during a hurricane. Luckily, many bottles of white truffle oil are left.
just dropped my daughter off at chuck e cheese for a birthday party. i'd rather spend the next two hours in the midst of the hurricane than have to stay in that madhouse.
I hope the storm doesn't get this bad:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Msp-gbHWKhc&feature=fvst
i'm perusing borders' going out of business sale. 'get laid or die trying' by jeff allen is 60% off, as is everything else in the sex section. anybody need anything?
more bad news for new yorkers: john hodgman's 'the areas of my expertise' is marked down to $3.99. i shall purchase it in solidarity.
The guy doing The Spector Dance at 1:23 in TR's video is muuuuuuney.
Marls - I understand your apprehension having not been through this. I still think this storm will be significantly weakened by the time it reaches NYC though.
Mark, that was TR chiming in from jersey.
Regarding the storm weakening, I agree. My issue is that I am the boob who bought an apt right on the water in the proverbial "low lying area". My apt on the 27th floor should be ok, but significant storm surge could result in a costly assessment for everybody if we get flooded. Hopefully my doorman has built a wall of caviar filled sandbags to protect the joint.
My bad, Marls. TR - Stop being a pussy.
Okay, so here's the Weather Channel streaker clip. Enjoy the wiener.
Back from a 2 hour nap. Starting in with the Dale's. Eye of the storm to hit us right at high tide. Good times a-comin'!
Screw you and your septum piercings, Mark.
We're listening to a mix of tunes pertinent to this weather. Led off with the song from this post. Bonus points for any guesses of what else is on the list.
Scorpions of course. Two CCr songs. And Irene Cara.
U got some purple rocker?
Scorpions is a yes. CCR is a yes. I don't know about Irene Cara or if "Fame" sort of rhyming with Rain counts.
Purple Rocker is a yes. Nice work thus far.
Van Morrison
The who
rainbow connection
november rain
mandolin rain
lightning crashes
trying to reason with hurricane season
a lot of other buffet
Mandolin Rain and Trying to Reason, yes. Van Morrison Full Force Gale, no and gay.
The Who? Danimal, we're gonna need song names.
Nobody likes Neil Young these days? Come on.
"Go Ahead In The Rain" off of Travels? Prolly not. "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"? "Singin In The Rain"? "Let It Rain" by Jovi? November Rain? Round and Round by Tevin Cambell?
Lazy Lightning?
Water World by Mos Def?
Anything off of Slippery When Wet?
Right now "Ridin' the Storm Out" by REO Speedwagon is playing.
So ... the Doors are next?
November Rain is a yes. The others... not familiar.
Anything from ride the lightning?
you don't have people's instinctive travels and the paths of rhythm?
No, but perhaps I should. Educate us masses, Z.
If Dave were commenting today, he'd get an obvious one.
Virginia: still the most fragile state in the union.
Travels is ATCQ's first album; perhaps the best hiphop concept album; and one of my favorite headphones albums. Go get it.
Will do. Probably not today.
Couple of cheesy entries on the playlist. Raindrops Are Falling on my Head. Here Comes the Rain Again by Eurythmics. Will work on cooler stuff.
Eddie Rabbitt.
How could I forget that one?
eddie rabbitt! of course. you guys are morons.
james taylor, obviously
Couple of Classic Rock Shootout entries...
Zep, Fool in the Rain (and there are many)
Clapton, Let it Rain
4 people have perished in Irene thus far. Be careful out there, people.
James Taylor, yes. Riders on the Storm playing now.
Dale's PA flowing nicely. A perfect hurricane accompaniment.
just bought my first bottle of roundstone rye from loudoun county's own catoctin creek. first distillery in the county since prohibition. i'll send some to everyone for christmas. except mark. he might get some in november.
A bad sports TV weekend has been made unbearable by the demand for panic programming.
Jerry, Dave has compiled a list of 103 good books over on his blog. Have a go at it.
Looks like I guess I've got some work to do.
Although I'm somewhat disappointed by the inclusion of the pop-pseudo-sciency fluff like Gladwell, Guns Germs and Steel (which was horrendous), etc. I was hoping that Dave was snobbier than that.
He needed that to balance out Lewis Thomas and Charles Darwin. But no T.H. Huxley or J.B.S. Haldane.
And no Seuss.
dave's a workingman's snob
i've read 11 of the 103. even with borders' everything must go pricing, i don't think i'll make it through the whole list.
I can't imagine making it through the Bible so I'll never collect all 103.
i'll write you the cliffs' notes
what's the name of the connective tissue between the upper lip and the nose? i told my wife it's the flumbungus, but i think that may not be accurate.
Wii bowling for the last hour. Good times
Late for Whit's post, but Riders on the Storm from The Doors is a given.
i'm sure whit's got some lightning seeds in that mix. he loves that floofy shit.
Just ordered UFC 134 after convincing a neighbor to brave the rain. Just realized it's from Brazil and started at 8. So I spent all that money and missed the first 75 minutes. Bummer.
But seeing Anderson Silva headline in his home country will be pretty cool.
As is Riders of the Storm by the Boogiemonsters.
"Underwater Rhymes" by Digital Underground and "Underwater" by GFK?
People's Instinctive Paths is pretty great.
Z - What about New World Water by Mos Def? And your suggestion of Round & Round by Tevin Campbell made me spit up my drink. Nice work.
Also, I'm a little worried about Rob saying I "might get some" in November. Reconsidering my plans to meet up with Dave & Rob in Orlando.
Right, New World Water is the title of that Mos Def song, not Water World. I think Water World is Handsome Boy Modeling School.
Round and Round is my jam.
we're men of the world, mark. the world includes greece.
and i sure hope whit's mix includes some waterboys.
Had a chance to watch UFC tonight at a friends house (free UFC is the very best kind) but since I'll be drinking at a bar & conducting my a fantasy draft tomorrow starting at noon, I decided I'd spend some time with the family. Now that that's out of the way, I think I'll drink some whiskey.
Yes, Water World is on Handsome Boy. Speaking of concept rap albums, it's not Travels but Delton3030 is one of my all-time faves. But I'm also in the tank for Del.
Deltron 3030 is some good shit. Some dude with plastic hair on CBS keeps telling me how far away the storm is from NYC. Over and over and over. I would prefer the Pats game.
the storm is coming! make your peace with your personal deity! godzilla will be wreaking havoc on the upper east side!
Rob - TR would like you to take it easy. Irene has left his nerves frazzled and he's very worried about all those basement apartments that might be ruined.
The UES will be fine, it's the Battery that will get crushed.
the storm won't hurt the ues, but godzilla's a 500 foot-tall radioactive lizard, zman. that shit's hard to recover from.
REM - So. Central Rain. Son Volt - Drown. Smiths - Panic. Yeah, I'm old.
and a fucking musical genius, ken. that's solid.
131 comments. the hurricane is almost as powerful as the nba draft.
Anyone mentioned Rain King- Counting Crows? Seems obvious. Even if Duritz is a douche.
first rule of g:tb club: we never talk about counting crows
or smashing pumpkins
"Waterfall" by the Stone Roses.
well played, z. i won that cd from wcwm waaaay back in the day.
4 bell's two hearted, some kindbud, a couple of rails, and spotify works the creative. ok, just the bell's.
What happened to Marlsworth Massengill? He appears to have gone awol after our minisummit.
"Ice Water" by Raekwon is a bit of a stretch but I'll go for it.
okay, we have subway flooding in nyc: yfrog.com/mfhkauj
Enjoying Mr. KQ. That's the recipe I have been following tonight. The REM is a so very yes, the Son Volt is a shoulda, the Smiths is a stretch - but only because the locals shot me a lotta weird looks when I saw morrissey at the Norva a few years back.
and when i say 'me', i mean 'they'
smiths should never, ever be a shoulda. be confident in your manhood, my friend. i can't tell you how much action i got in high school because i was into the smiths.
because i didn't get any, but still, don't compromise your artistic integrity.
whit, adding to mr kq's thoughts, 'windfall' oughta be on the list. may the wind take your troubles away.
whitney i'm sure we have some mutual rugby contacts - i think i played against your boy hightower at aspen ruggerfest a couple of years in a row. we played them in the semi's and finals two diff years although mark williams was handing out shrooms upon entrance to the party so i can't be sure. oh and one for kq's eddie fetish - pj oceans - duh.
I will be so fucking happy when the LLWS is over.
i like that nobody fixed the 'runib carter' tag. we're the internet's leading provider of misspelled rubin carter content.
Hightower was back in the area last month and we had many beverages. Would love to trade rugby stories. Most of them end ridiculously.
Oceans is a good tune, not specific enough to warrant inclusion but strong nonetheless.
Looks like Irene came and went with minimal damage to my town. We drank like it was the end of the world nonetheless. Many thanks to everyone who reached out to check on my well-being. In all seriousness, best of luck to the northerners with the oncoming elements.
please, please, please tell me that 'ocean man' is on that playlist.
man, i feel like i'm on a sat night live skit. "no song for you!"
Take a look at the current winds from Irene. http://tinyurl.com/3dmh2y9
Most overblown storm ever.
Jim Cantore is still in Battery Park. Assistants are spritzIng him with water sprayers for effect.
Rob, mere mention of Ocean doesn't merit inclusion. I live near the ocean. It's on my everyday playlist. (well, mostly because Ween is my personal soundtrack to life.)
Still, nobody has said Like a Hurricane. Such a great song.
Citizen Cope, Hurricane Waters
And nobody better disparage Counting Crows in my presence. One of the best nights of my life was prompted by their show.
i'll disparage counting crows in or out of your presence. pretentious fuckfaces.
also, ocean man should probably be on every playlist, regardless of topic.
Rob, I'm not just taking a contrary position because I like Jerry. Counting Crows, especially now that they aren't atop the pop culture heap, aren't pretentious. Dorky, yes. But their music brings out the best in sexy women.
And if you are picking a Ween song to register on every playlist, I'd choose Baby Bitch or Mister Would You Please Help My Pony. Or Pollo Asado if you are weird like Dave.
This is not the Statler-Waldorf redux I was hoping for...
Woodford reserve
graydon carter's hurricane party was a fucking disaster! some asshole took the last of tribeca's black truffle oil!
the clash - should i stay or should i go.
I know. We should be combining our forces to embarrass the New Yorkers. But Mark, it's late, I've been through a hurricane, i'm drinking, and I'm listening to The Cult singing "Rain.". Lame, but at least I am drinking.
This mr kq guy...
i'm up way past my bedtime in solidarity with my metropolitan brothers and sisters. and with this dale's pale ale.
Springsteen, Lost in the Flood
Peter Gabriel, Here Come the Flood
The Weather Girls, It's Raining Men
Okay, maybe not that last one.
Rob, I appreciate you defying your old age and staying up. I, too, am drinking the Dale's. I'm also wearing the Dale's t-shirt, and I can hear you now saying in your best Droz, "Don't be that guy." I guess I am that guy.
Styx come sail away
I'm not drinking Dale's like Ace & Gary. But I'm up too. Even with a fantasy draft tomorrow. Looks like I'll cure my hangover by getting drunk.
sanfranimal!
mark - our big ffl draft is september 7. we'll need your scouting.
I'll be happy to provide my semi-drunken scouting. I actually try and prepare for this particular draft, as the prize is somewhat substantial.
Cheap Trick on Austin City Limits tonight. Rob loves him some Dream Police, by the by.

The question to Danimal's answer is:
If Danimal played ball for Woodford High, what would he be?
Danimal is sober.
Brazil went 8-1 tonight. Didn't realize every fight had a Brazilian. Also didn't realize the fight started at 8. But I did realize I had a lot of Grey Goose, a lot of tonic and a lime. Head will hurt tomorrow. Thank God for Man U action on the DVR. Hopefully we won't be added to the list of 1.4 million w/o power.
The real damage to the NYC area will start after sun-up, when the high tide and the winds bring the pain.
The only reason I can think of for hating on the coverage of the storm's potential impact to New York is latent homosexuality.
anyone else up wet-vaccing their mother-in-laws apartment because she fell asleep and didn't turn the sump pump on?
and guns, germs, and steel was seminal!
