Full disclosure: I'm constitutionally incapable of functioning in a professional environment without a looming deadline, and I don't have one right now. Because I have this magic blog machine, you get to benefit from my ADD.
Gheorghe: The Blog is a direct descendent of Gheorghe: The Magazine, a short-lived internet 'zine that "published" two or three issues back in 1999 or so. As noted over there to the right, the premise behind G:TB is that most of the world takes itself far too seriously, which results in a deafening mediascape of self-important blathering at best, and an imperial thirst for treasure and blood at worst. This self-seriousness is particularly pronounced in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, where most of the G:TB editorial staff makes our home.
In the old days of G:TM, we had a running feature that detailed those individuals and/or institutions that were filled with the spirit of Gheorgheness. We called it the Gheorghe List. Later, here at G:TB, we kicked off our efforts with this:
To borrow - liberally - from a much more accomplished man, I can't define Gheorgheness, but I know it when I see it.
Jon Stewart's got a whole heaping mound of Gheorgheness. Dan Snyder (or, as he'll come to be known in this space, Little Danny Starfucker) is the antithesis of Gheorghe. John Riggins has a PhD in Gheorgheness. George Will is a George, but not a Gheorghe. Yao's a little bit Gheorghy, but Kobe's not. Kevin Millar teaches Gheorghe 101 in Boston, but Roger Clemens flunked out of the course. Emeril Lagasse seems to know which wine goes best with Gheorghe. Mark Cuban's thinking about making Gheorghe an honorary Maverick.
I can't think of a single politician with Gheorgheness, though Dennis Kucinich is really funny-looking. Stewart Scott aspires to Gheorgheness, but he's so fake that he can't pull it off. Rich Eisen can, though. Too bad he's dead. Well, taken a job at the NFL Network - 6 one, 1/2 dozen the other. Dennis Miller used to be chock full of hearty Gheorgheness, then he took a hard right turn and became a caricature. Michael Moore is so far from Gheorghe that he might as well be a short, fat, humorless troll. Oh. That simile ran smack into the wall of reality, didn't it?
Jack Black is the high priest of Gheorghe, attended by his happy alcolyte, Jeremy Piven. But not by John Favreau, David Spade, or Colin Quinn. The Kids in the Hall gaily genuflect to Gheorghe while they get Girl Drink Drunk. Sting's got more anti-Gheorghe in his pinky than Bruce Springsteen does in his whole family, though, to be sure, I still like both of their music. And speaking of music, the Wiggles are thinking about making Gheorghe a new recurring character - Greg will pull him out of the magic hat.
Aside from a few dated references (Millar's obviously now an Oriole, and Greg Wiggle has left the band) I think this first cut at the Gheorghe List holds up pretty well. And despite the lefty political leanings of at least half of the G:TB editorial staff (I'm pretty sure Teejay has no idea what goes on in Congress, and I have my suspicions about Dennis), I think we were pretty equal opportunity in our slagging of the non-Gheorghy.
That said, the original Gheorghe List is 3 1/2 years old at this point. We need to induct the next class into Gheorghe: The List. While we put our meager brains together to ponder (and remember, I can't work without a deadline) we welcome your input.

i will note with some chagrin that one of the early posts on this site was me professing my fondness for dick vitale. man, the worm turned for me on that one.
i enjoyed you misspellign Stuart Scott's name. I doubt he ever sees it in print (whether due to ignorance or just that mangled eye of his), but if he did I can imagine him losing his shit. "They don't know how to spell my name? Jesus Christ, I'm Stu fucking Scott...boo yah!!"
God, I hate that douche.
I guess I should nominate somebody while I'm here. I'll go with somebody local and easy to get it going. Gilbert, of course.
Ugueth Urbina - not the least bit Gheorghey...
Former MLB pitcher Ugueth Urbina has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for the attempted murder of five men in Venezuela.
Urbina, a two-time All-Star who last pitched with the Phillies in 2005, was also found guilty of illegal deprivation of liberty and violating a prohibition against taking justice into his own hands during a dispute in October of that year. Urbina allegedly attacked the men with machettes at his family's ranch.
mark - i never even noticed that we spelled stu's name wrong, but i enjoy your imagined outcome so much that i'm gonna say we did it on purpose.
gilbert's a no-brainer. nice.
urbina's not the least bit a lot of things. one of which is free.
Illegal deprivation of liberty? Yikes. He should have committed the crime in America, where that's perfectly legal . . . wait for it . . . during this administration.
Ooh, snap!
It's not Gheorghe W. by accident...
that kind of sacrilege will get your ass banned from this site, young man.
Let me restate..."It's spelled "George W" and not "Gheorghe W" for a reason...
Can I come out and play now??
that's much better.
My nominations this year for the Gheorghe List:
Clinton Portis
Peter Gammons (especially after that ridiculous ESPN commercial)
Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips
Steve Carell
Chris Cooley
Jose Reyes
Dave Flynn
Anti-Gheorghe of the year:
Tom Cruise
i can dig all those - care to write up a brief nominating speech for each?
I'll work on that.
I came here manily to correct the spelling of Stu Scott's name, but since that ship has sailed, I would like to strenuosly object to the inclusion of Jon Stewart on the Gherorghe list. Having met him and witnessed his behavior, fame has corrupted him and he has become the self-important steaming pantload he always hated.
I'll nominate Scott Van Pelt, John Daly, Bill Rafftery, NBC News' Brian Williams and Mark Cuban for Gheorghe classification.
Raftery will sail through this group with a beer and a handshake. He's a G:TB favorite. Well nominated.
And Mark Cuban was mentioned, in a roundabout way, in Rob's original post.
No one associated with US Airways or the running of Reagan National Airport will ever sniff the Gheorghe list.
Can we nominate Stu's glass eye?
i strenuously object? Is that how it works, geoff? hm? objection. overruled. oh, no, no, no. no, I STRENUOUSLY object. oh. well, if you strenuously object then i should take some time to reconsider.
overruled.
raftery's in with onions on, as are williams and van pelt - nice calls there. i'm pondering daly - sometimes he's perfectly gheorghy, but gheorghe would never quit on a round or on his fans.
You? You, Lt. Weinberg?
And if Brian Williams is getting in, Chris Hansen is right behind him...
no kid touchers, or people who interview them. sorry, moose out front should've told you.
Since Hansen isn't getting in, can I nominate Stone Phillips? His sessions of gravitas-off with Stephen Colbert are high comedy.
hmmm, stone phillips is worth considering. as, for that matter, is colbert.
I'm not willing to give on this Jon Stewart thing--few celebs take themselves more seriously than Stewart--he's a tremendous prick. I know rob loves him cause he mugs at the camera while calling the President dumb (and admittedly, he is funny doing it) but if you really and truly atnd by the mission statement of Gheorghe, you need to know that including Jon Stweart in that list makes a complete mockery of what you are doing here.
Agree on Colbert...Phillips does self-important voice overs and lead ins for a career. I'm not sold.
That's the whole point about his gravitas-off competition that he has with Colbert. They go back and forth trying to make the most inane things sound deadly serious in the typical "story lead-in" voice.
I never considered Phillips funny, or self deprecating in any way before I saw him and Colbert doing this on Colbert's show. Good times.

The second one is especially good.
let's dig a bit deeper into geoff's feelings here. what is your evidence regarding stewart's prickness? i see a guy who skewers both sides of the political spectrum as well as the media elites that play along with those in power. yes, his views are obviously slanted toward the left, but he pulls no punches on the dems, either.
he's also famously called out the media talking heads as hypocritical gasbags to their face instead of hiding behind his show - that gets points in my book.
he mocks himself incessantly on both his show and in the interviews i've seen on 60 minutes and other news programs - more points.
finally, he's not so highbrow that he can't bust a gut laughing at ricky gervais, dave chappelle, et al when they appear on his show.
i don't get it. evidence, please, beyond some non-specific commentary.
oh, and as a point of clarification, i love jon stewart because he tells truth to power of all kinds, something that very few in the circle-jerk culture of the political/media elite ever do.
I call for the posthumous induction of James Brown...
whit - how much money do you have laying around?

I second James' nomination. I'd also like to nominate Pam Anderson for her role in Borat.
Oh my...

Good stuff.
Man, I wish I had enough money to buy Strat-o-matic, but I just quit my job. I don't even have enough money to buy the 2006 cards.
Did you get the jersey retirement ceremony and motorcycle today?
What about a rocking chair?
nice, a rocking chair. because you're, like, old and stuff.
Nothing gets past you does it, Rob?
with advanced age comes wisdom, mark. you'll realize that someday.
Rob...I refuse to give on Stewart--he is a self-important smug prick and he treats people like shit. If that is "Gheorgheness" then I, sir, do not want to be a part of it.
And my old boss went to W&M with him and said he's a prick--and THAT is a scientific FACT.
fair enough, geofferson. i value your opinion - i just choose to exercise my constitutional right to disagree with it.
is it possible that your old boss is the prick and neither you nor he/she realizes it? or have i just completely blown your mind.
Mr. Lebowitz did play soccer for the Tribe, so if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...
Although, I've known people to change since their college days...
some of the most fun people i knew at w&m played soccer for the tribe, and my freshman roommate and all around good guy was a manager for the tribe soccer squadron, so if that's judging criteria, put a few more checks in the 'pro' column.
here's a remarkable stat from ken pomeroy:
in the ncaa tournament, teams are making 33% of 2-point jumpers (not all shots, just jump shots), going 465-1410. over the same period, teams are 35.2% from the 3-point arc (575-1635). unless you can get a dunk or a layup, shoot the 3, baby.
Never thoguht I'd nominate Dirk Nowitzki for being Gheorghey. However, after watching his Mick Jagger impersonation, well, just watch...
http://nba.aolsportsblog.com/2007/03/30/dirk-sings-start-me-up-in-the-shower/
Not trying to be a dick (it just comes naturally), but if there's someone on the other side of the political aisle from you, and you're both quite politically-minded, and you call them out as being a prick, you sort of have to provide some kind of specific evidence, anecdotal or otherwise -- or people tend to just think you're bashing the guy because of his outlook.
Secondhand from the old boss is close, but a lot of people who "went to college" with famous people tend to embellish their relationship with the famous people and/or try to let their air out of their balloon, just because.
That said, there's certainly the chance Jon Leibowitz was a prick at W&M and Jon Stewart is one now, but the onus is on the basher to give us a little something to go on. "Met him and witnessed his behavior" is a good start -- did he not laugh at your jokes? Did he punk you? Did he tell you to talk to the hand? Did he cropdust the Senator's wife's tea party? Or did he make a joke about Karl Rove that bristled you?
Generally being aloof doesn't get you to "prick," since (a) it comes with the territory of being in demand all the time, and (b) you do that every day and you're not famous.
Inquiring minds want to know!
Anybody see the clip of Karl Rove rapping & dancing (if you want to call it that) from earlier this week?
At once the saddest and funniest thing I've seen all week.
And Teej, I was sorry you missed the festivities last night. It was a who's who of old colleagues throwing 'em back at the Dubliner and Times, and Igor made an (always unwelcome) appearance. In lieu of motorcycles and rocking chairs, I was presented with an array of shots, ranging from the tart and tasty to the hideously horrid.
My #00 is being retired, however. Today [today, today, today] . . . I consider myself . . . the luckiest man . . . on the face of the earth . . . now batting for Pedro Borbon . . . Manny . . . Mo-ta [Mota, Mota, Mota] . . .
Is Leslie Nielsen behind the plate?
the rove thing is a trainwreck. it's fascinating.
i find it interesting that nbc's david gregory, among others, is on stage with rove during much of the "performance". there's something more than a little wrong with the media cozying up so closely to the political elite in such a public fashion.
It's completely wrong. Unfortunately, thats the reality that we now live in. Media feel the need to be friends with many political elites in order to gain inside access. Of course, the rub is that these "friendships" prevent said media from truly embracing their duties and supplying the public with true inside information.
Did I just pass out? I was having some weird dream where I discussed politics and the media. Wow, that was disturbing.
For those who've yet to see the clip. Enjoy:

Now that I've had more time to focus on this, I realized Knicks forward and former Gator David Lee is a first-ballot G:TBer...
what an awful, awful loss for the wizards last night. they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in impossible fashion. i'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that this team needs a new head coach - they do too many dumb things, too often.
Michael Ruffin is a moron.
The Wiz need to win this game today against the Bucks, especially with Miami already losing.
