[Tuesday Morning Update: This addition stuff is apparently verrrry difficult. I crunched the numbers last night and hope the amended figures below are actually correct.]Here at G:TB, it's hard to tell what we're worse at, picking this year's games or doing basic math. Here's what I have as the amended 1st round totals:
Rob (East): 5-3, 25 points
TJ (South): 5-3, 23 points
Dennis (West): 4-4, 20 points
Whitney (Midwest): 4-4, 14 points
All I have to say for myself is that my homeriffic pick of ODU going to the Sweet 16 wasn't nearly as bad an idea as ignoring the advice of everybody in the world except Wheelhouse Geoff and taking Notre Dame. Those 12 points sure would come in handy about now.
Here are the first weekend totals up to the moment:
TJ (South): 9-3, 50 points(!)
Dennis (West): 7-5, 38 points
Rob (East): 7-5, 36 points
Whitney (Midwest): 6-6, 26 points
Please, someone, check my math. Not my strong suit.
TJ's gotten himself pretty much in the clear with some stellar prognostication. He could whiff from here on out and I'd still need to be perfect to top him. If my numbers are true, here are each of our respective maximums:
TJ: 93
Dennis: 75
Rob: 65
Whitney: 65
Odds are with the jobless guy buying the employed guys lunch. Well picked.

man, what a thoroughly unsatisfying day of hoops action. if the big guys are gonna win, at least let the games be close (note that we here in the nation's capital saw little to none of the unlv/wisconsin and texas/usc game, so we didn't even get to watch the upsets progress - and the tennessee/uva result wasn't an upset).
also, i'd submit you've got better odds of avoiding the basement than i do. i've got all my eggs in the hoyas' basket at this point - if they lose to vandy, i'm well and truly fucked.
I'm not cooked yet, but I don't see the Hoyas getting taken down by the Commodores, especially the way things are going in this tournament . . . meaning I will need my original and wild prediction of the Ducks taking the region to come true. Stay tuned.

Thanks to Dennis' Sirius radio, we were treated to Pete Gillen doing the first half of UVA/Tenn, and I must say it was one of the more entertaining/confusing color jobs I've heard in awhile.
I've got to say, I'm pretty happy for both Lon Kruger and Tim Floyd, who both made such disastrous jumps to the NBA I never thought we would hear from them again (I always knew that Calipari would resurrect a program through some solid cash advances). Which is a nice way of saying, "Tubby, enjoy Sacramento, and we'll see you back in the Big 10 in 2009".

The Maryland Nighthawks made history in their final game with the tallest starting five in basketball history: 7-foot-9 Sun Ming Ming, 7-foot-7 Gheorghe Muresan, 7-foot-1 Ayu Adigun, 7-foot Deng D'Awol and the little fella, 6-foot-8 Barry Mitchell. They beat the Cape Cod Frenzy 132-128.
Barry Mitchell? Really? They couldn't find one more 7 footer to fill out the starting five?
And TJ, how did you not attend this? I would've expected a full recap (with pics).

I think we G:TBers might have been a little disappointed. Gheorghe played fewer than five minutes, and it appears he only had the ball for a total of 12 seconds. He took one shot, missed it, and had an assist.
Actually, just to see him out there again would've been a treat.
Yep, the 2007 Washington Nationals season is going to be an epic disaster:
Jason Simontacchi appears to be well on his way to earning the Nationals' third spot in their rotation, according to the Washington Post. John Patterson will be the Opening Day starter, and Shawn Hill (gulp) appears to be the second starter. It's worth noting that Simontacchi, who underwent major shoulder surgery in the fall of 2004, hasn't pitched in the bigs since then, and hasn't started a game since he pitched for the Cardinals in 2003.

Which reminds me, I had a double case bet with Heath and Dennis stemming from Atlantic City. This guy says it's a LOCK the Nats lose 100 games; those two think otherwise. I am gonna be a big winner.

ATLANTA -- Hooters, the restaurant chain known for its tasty wings and scantily clad servers, is heading to Israel.
Atlanta-based Hooters of America Inc. said in a statement that it has reached a franchise deal with Ilana and Ofer Ahiraz to open the first Hooters restaurant this year in Israel, with several more locations in Israel to follow.
