Wally Backman was manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks for less than a week.
The Arizona Republic reported on its Web site Friday that Backman, who got the job on Monday, had been fired.
Boy, that Jeff Moorad is sure running a smooth operation out West. And to think, they've now missed out on hiring Charlie Manuel. What a shame.

This is idiotic. Players get a free pass all the way up to murder charges, and he gets fired for a few skeletons in his closet -- nothing TJ Doyle doesn't have as well? Nice PR move, too.
Wally Backman looks to be a good manager, but I guess the powers that be in Phoenix are sending a message. If Bobby Cox wanted to manage the Diamondbacks, I guess they'd have to turn him away for that domestic violence arrest some years back. I hear Grady Little's record is squeaky clean.
