Serenading Shlara for Her Birthday

The happiest of birthday wishes to beloved gheorghie Shlara!

And since no birthday is complete without singing, here you go. This post is a coupling of a bday wish and the annual posting of Les Coole's 20 from... series.

These are 20 songs released in 23 that tickled my fanny, or something like that. Enjoy, for those equipped with Spotify.

For the official record, Shlara sent us this:

"Guys, I’m getting dumber as I get older, and can’t figure out how to comment from my phone, so I’m posting my comment on email vs the actual blog.

I’m in Hawai’i for a family trip and saw the awesome Les Cool posts and lovely
Birthday messages. Thanks so much you guys. I really appreciate being a member of this internet family ❤️"

I left my home in Norfolk, Virginia; California on my mind. I straddled that Greyhound and rode him into Raleigh and on across Caroline.

I left my home in Georgia, headed for the Frisco Bay

Well, I'm a standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona
And such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford
Slowin' down to take a look at me

TJ referencing the Eagles broke this thread. Speaking of broken, we’re celebrating my daughter’s birthday tonight with a sleepover. Started with a trip to the beach, back to the pool and soon to dinner at the family restaurant. That all sounds great if you forget that I’m on the front end of a huge night of 11-12 year old girls taking up residence in my house.

Eagles vibes are typically bad. 20+ years ago I was busking on a corner& a coked up guy keep paying me money to play that goddamn song teej referenced for him. I still feel dirty after all these years.

Good luck Mark!

Whitney said...

Where were you busking, Rootsy? Star City?

rootsminer said...

Yep. In the little village near my house. At the time I was living in an apartment right in the thick of it. Now I have to go a half mile to get there.

rootsy is the world's most interesting man

Speaking of the Eagles, I just finished another music documentary, the likes of which I used to crank through regularly during the peak of the pandemic. Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice lacks the wild tales of sordid living like a number of the ones I’ve watched, but it’s quite impressive. Damnation, what a voice, and what a singular spirit. Most of what she’s done her whole life is very much on her own terms and super successful in the face of doubters, which makes her current condition that much harder.

A decade ago she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, which made off with her supreme vocal skills. Some time after the filming of this doc in 2019, it was determined she has something called progressive supranuclear palsy. My beloved Aunt Molly had it, and it took her out in 2017. Sad stuff.

Anyway, well worth the 90 mins to hear sounds several degrees beyond dulcet and get the backstory of a hip, hip, hip lady.

um . . . i can't watch the dolphins/chiefs game? and the eagles game is on 8 PM Monday? this is stupid

rootsminer said...

I never got into Linda Ronstadt. My parents gave me plenty of opportunities as a kid, but it just didn't do it for me. I'll pass the rec onto them.

Mark said...

You CAN watch Dolphins-Chiefs, Dave. Just sign up for a free trial of Peacock.

Unrelated- I just found out U2 has a residency at The Sphere in Vegas. It was relatively new when I was in Vegas this summer and was cool as shit hit from the outside. Apparently it’s far more impressive on the inside. Anyone been?

Marls said...

Can we get a webcam of Dave trying to sign up for his Peacock free trial.

rob said...

can’t believe the woke nfl won’t let the bills and steelers play in a little bit of snow. president desantis will put a stop this nonsense.

zman said...

Whit’s trolling me with Linda Ronstadt.

your university of colorado buffaloes small all-girl squad put in a game shift today, finishing 11 of 18 squads in the national semifinal round. top 8 teams advanced to the finals. improvement over last year. baby steps.

Well done Buffs.

Also, anyone else catch the Joy Division tune Transmission on a commercial playout in earlier game? I alerted the G:TB Board.

And happy belated Shlara!!

rootsminer said...

I listened to earlier game while erranding, til elite joey flacco hurled two pick sixes in short order.

Watching later game, but opting for k harlan & r tucker radio stream over the peacock stiffs.

Whitney said...

Peacock stiffs is an amusing coupling.
