Election Open Thread

Saw a tweet thread yesterday that fairly well encapsulated my feelings about our election:

The work is all done (and by "work" in my case, I mean sending snarky tweets and giving a bunch of cash to Uncle Joe and Jaime Harrison). A lot of other folks busted their asses. Nothing to do but hope America comes to her senses.

So here's some music to capture the mood (and feel free to add to the playlist):

Anxiety and dread cover it for me.

My hope is that the result becomes clear before we get to resolving the legal and administrative issues around absentee and mail-in votes.

I don't think often about Florida (Sorry Mark and Danimal), PA, OH, or AZ, but I'm definitely thinking about them today. I think about NC fairly often and will also think about them today.

Good luck to all.

I’m dreading the most that there’s a chance of electile dysfunction today. Let’s have a clear cut champion. Not named Donald.

In non-election news, I had a 30 minute 1x1 Zoom call with W&M Pres Rowe yesterday. We talked about the merits of club sports, the unsung impressiveness of the Flex MBA program I’m in, what today will look and feel like on campus, a whole lot about a new program I’m helming to retain recent college grads in our region and make them as workplace-ready as possible, and a quick mention of how I had a really good time in undergrad fucking off and drinking beer.

I like her. She seemed sincere and in the moment with me in the middle of a day when she surely had 500 other things on her plate and on her mind.

Whitney said...

Also, she told me that the preferred form of our alma mater for their marketing purposes is the “house-style” William & Mary rather than The College of William and Mary. Ampersand and all.

Learn it.
Know it.
Live it.

That’s “electile,” Squeaker. Big diff.

If Florida goes for Biden, I will reeeeeaaaaalllllyyyy try to hold off on making Florida jokes for the foreseeable future. Florida seems to be the most important news we might get before 11 PM tonight, given they already started counting the mail-in votes.

Who are y'all's map guys? Are you Team King or Team Kornacki? I'm partial to King. Got to root for my fellow grey haired peeps.

zman said...

I assume that at the end of your z call you scheduled a rendez vous for drinks and inappropriate behavior.

However, as The Waitresses said, I think I’ll miss this one this year. I think it is going to be a long 4 more years of Don.

Most disheartening for me is that if not for a pandemic and 230k dead, and a generational civil rights movement, the Big Divider would be a shoo-in. And he still might win.

Not sure what people are watchin' or thinkin'.

i'm playing some tom petty and wilco on the guitar. no watching anything until ten pm. i think that's the way to do it.

I randomly discovered SiriusXM channel 714, "Indie 1.0." Was doing some shit around the house today (it being a state holiday now) and this channel suits me. The last 3 songs were Robyn Hitchcock "Balloon Man," "Liz Phair "Fuck and Run," and now Bon Iver "Skinny Love."

Dave said...

just played "walls" and "you wreck me" and "we're just friends." but I'm mainly playing songs from wildflowers. easy to play and sing along to.

when you're 50, it's worth just the tip to improve your backhand.

Biden never had a shot in Florida imo. Outside of large counties near urban centers it’s incredibly red and is becoming more so each year. I live in a laid back beach county and it’s red as all hell. Plus, the Hispanic population in South Florida bought the socialist talk hook, line and sinker.

Pennsylvania, Ohio and North Carolina not looking too bad early on.

Election is effectively down to PA/MI.WI. Biden needs 2 of them. Virginia not turning blue as reliably as usual. I may be in the market for some real estate in Europe or South America.

Blitzer's calls nearly ruined election night for me 4 years ago, and he's still calling this like a horse race.

rob said...

virginia is very blue, just reporting early votes late in the evening. the rest is too right.

TR said...

CNN making the case for Biden in MI.

Biden needs AZ and PA. Or AZ and MI and WI. I am skeptical.

Jamboni said...

Fairfax County is held up and some of the blue areas in south eastern va are still coming. SO VA should remain blue. AZ looking good for Biden. It's possible the winner gets as few as 270-273 votes. Regardless of winner, we can't agree on shit as a nation.

Jamboni said...

Is Iowa going to be the ultimate wild card? There's a scenario where Biden needs it to get to 270 votes exactly (if he wins VA, AZ, PA and loses MI and WI).

zwoman says I/we need to have faith that the mail-in ballots will move things enough to get Biden the EC votes he needs. zson thinks the Electrical College has electrical votes. He is researching places to move, here's the list:

London - he learned this isn't a country and that the president there is Trumpy so it's out
Ireland - pronounced Ire-Land (not eye-er-lnd), they drive on the wrong side of the road and you might get Boris Johnson here too so it's out
Switzerland - this was my suggestion but he shot it down because they speak too many languages there (he's still an American at heart)
Canada - currently the leader although the cold weather doesn't help
Trinidad and Tobago - too hot
Singapore - this one has staying power; zwoman and I could likely transfer there work-wise, they speak English, the cost of living is low, apparently it's beautiful, and they know how to control the pandemic; unfortunately it's insanely far from our elderly parents

Let me know if you have any other leads for zson to review.

TR said...

I feel like a lot of us live in Ire Land right about now.

Costa Rica is a nice place for US expats. No standing army there, so no strongman will take it over. Prostitution is legal there.

Switzerland is great and it's okay if you only speak English, French or German. They're good with all three. Geneva is especially beautiful. But it's pricey. Same for Luxembourg, which mandates seven weeks of vacation per year.

Maybe we all move to Vancouver.

Jamboni said...

Costa Rica definitely on my list. But it's hard to own real estate there (even though it's financially very affordable).

I can't sell my wife on Canada or any place with worse weather than Leesburg. I might be able to sell her on Prague.

CNN reporting that the uncounted votes in WI and MI are largely mail in (same for GA and NC, though those seem less attainable). Biden slowly adding on to his small lead in WI and Trump's lead in MI went from ~192K early this morning to 27K at present. If Biden holds NV, that would likely put him at 270. It's not completely bleak but it's significantly less likely than when last night started.

rob said...

i woke this morning with more optimism than i had when i went to bed, at least presidentially speaking. but the pollsters really shit the bed across the board. mcconnell will still control the senate, so the wave of unqualified republican judges will continue unabated, and good luck with any kind of modestly progressive agenda for the dems.

TR said...

Biden at 224. If he takes the four states where he is leading (AZ, WI, ME, NV) he gets to 255. That means MI or PA gets him over the top.

Trump up by 0.5% in MI, but I'm thinking the mail-in votes may push this to Biden.

A longshot, perhaps, but possible.

Jamboni said...

Trump lead in MI down to 21K and change. But you know, we shouldn't be counting those and the election is over...

Jamboni said...

NBC showing Biden with a 1400 vote lead in MI.

rob said...

this is a decent review of what needs to happen:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/11/03/paths-to-victory-trump-biden/

tl;dr biden needs two states of nc, ga, mi, pa, and wi while trump needs four of the five.

Jamboni said...

CNN is convinced GA is in the mix for Biden, based on where the uncounted votes are coming from (and them being largely mail in). It's a remote possibility, but a GA win for Biden would be curtains for Trump, assuming NV and AZ hold for Biden. I don't want to take any state for granted right now.

T.J. said...

We're thinking the U.K. or Italy. Geneva is expensive, but I enjoyed that city and the parts of Switzerland I saw.

Dave said...

i'm going to shoot baskets. when i get back, this better be over . . .

Whitney said...

You should probably shoot a lot of baskets, then

Jamboni said...

You'll have to shoot baskets until tomorrow - NV not reporting any more votes until then. Sounds like an exercise you could undertake for charity. I pledge 1 virtual cent per made basket.

TR said...

I hate to post a comment, since we are at 69, but things are looking better and better. Christie's rebuke of Trump is important. More Rs need to do the same to squash this nonsense.

I saw a souped-up F150 on my town's Main St this morning, after I dropped off my lazy 7th grader at middle school. It had big tires, tinted windows and, of course, a quartet of Trump flags. Was all I could do to not give the finger to the truck. But I hadn't even finished my first coffee, so I'm not beating myself up too badly about it.

We'll worry about what it will mean to have Biden vs a Republican majority in the Senate later. That could be what has the market fired up. Biden works to get the virus controlled, and the Senate keeps the radical left neutered.

rob said...

i have taken to giving the finger to any house i see with a trump sign. i'm not proud of myself, but it's a venting strategy.

Biden gonna win this thing? At about 11pm last night, oddsmakers had Trump at 2:1. Now it's Biden 4:1. Not sure if that is good or bad.

Um, that is good.

Dave said...

this is my election update page as well. the internet is too confusing.

Jamboni said...

Some of the delays appear to relate to individual state rules for addressing absentee/mail-in votes. NV and NC have not changed all day.

GA and PA might still be interesting. GA is under 80K lead for Trump at this point. PA has come down about 40% from this morning(to ~370K), with still maybe 1M-1.5M votes to be counted, with a heft amount of those coming from Philly, Allegheny, and other blue counties.

IF GA and PA don't come through, this whole thing could ride on NV.

rob said...

michigan called for biden by several outlets. trump now has to run the table on nv, az, ga, nc, and pa. fundamentals in at least nv and az favor biden. could argue that pa does, too.

Dave said...

why is biden favored in pa? are that many votes left to count? how could the whole thing come down to states like az and nv? those places are hot, surreal, and full of cacti.

OBX dave said...

Exit poll said that 35 percent of voters said economy was their top priority. Trump won 81 percent of those voters. Yikes. Dems have essentially squandered two chances in past 12 years to appeal to working class and broad swath of population.

Dovetails with a point Marls regularly makes: present 2-party system is broken. They're opposite sides of the same coin, beholden to special interests and corporate money. Biden and AOC no more belong in the same party than Mitt and Trump. We need probably a half-dozen viable political parties. Otherwise, it's gonna be business as usual, with tweaks and nibbles around the edges, and minimal progress.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

Nevada's scary to me. Vegas/Henderson has been supportive of and dependent on Trump's approach to opening the economy. I could see that part of the state going away from Biden because of tourism risk. It's just lurking under the radar ready to ruin Biden's momentum.

The fact that no one with any real monetary backing or political clout has started the push for a third party is amazing. We've got enough antitrumpers on the right - Romney, Flake, Kasich - one of these guys could have been the standard bearer here. If not now, when?

I think Perot is the specter that haunts the third party concept. The first party to splinter may end up benefitting the opposite side of the spectrum. You probably need two additional parties, one on each side, to get any traction.
