Go Home UCL, You're Drunk

This morning, UEFA will draw the matchups for the semifinals of this year's UEFA Champions League. Usual suspects Real Madrid (two-time defending champions) and Bayern Munich are joined by a lively Liverpool side and a most unlikely participant in Roma.

We know, man
Liverpool buried favored Manchester City under a sea of red (and a questionably overturned goal), winning 5-1 on aggregate across two legs in what was perhaps less of an upset than has been portrayed. Jurgen Klopp's men have now beaten the Citizens three straight times.

Roma, though, came out of of nowhere. Drubbed and left for dead by Barcelona in the first leg of the tie, the Italian side came home trailing by a 4-1 count. That lone away goal turned out to be decisive, though nobody asked before the game would've given I Giallorossi a tosser's chance.

The American-owned Romans gave their fans early hope on a sixth-minute goal by Edin Dzeko, but went into the half up only 1-0, and down 4-2 on aggregate. Captain Daniele De Rossi buried a penalty in the 58th minute to bring the crowd to the edge of its collective seats.

And then, in the 82nd minute, this happened:

It's gonna be hard for the final legs to top this week. Not only did Roma deliver a comeback for the ages, Juventus came from three goals down to tie Real Madrid on the road before that bastard Cristiano Ronaldo scored a penalty kick in stoppage time to rescue the holders.

We're hoping Liverpool draw Roma so we're guaranteed one of those two clubs in the final. But we'll take anything at this point. Sports!

The audio track to the video of that goal plays like total parody. High pitched screams and “mamma mia!” over and over again.

I’m in Miami for the weekend hanging out with my old roommate who (sort of) crashed TJ’s wedding. It’s his last weekend before his wife and kid come over from Peru and he moves into the South Florida suburbs. We may not a Marlins game tonight. Not sure we’ll be able to get tickets though...

“may hit”

You may have seen on the Twat the other day that the Jacksonville JUMBO SHRIMP! outshined the Marlins in attendance the other night. Granted, it was the Shrimpfs opening day, but damn. Good luck with the seats Mark.

I should’ve brought my Jumbo Shrimps hat.

Just when you thought it was safe, you read this headline, courtesy of USA Today:

Hand dryers suck in fecal bacteria and blow it all over your hands, study finds

most excellent maxi-golf summit with marls today. sublime springtime day in northern virginia. finally. i would love to stretch this daybuzz into the evening, but i'm scheduled to volunteer at my daughter's middle school play this evening. and though the imagery is amusing, per marls, showing up as shooter from hoosiers is likely bad form.

I’ve heard Billy Joel’s Allentown three times this week when i had no sonic decisionmaking ability. God dammit it has pissed me off. The number of shitburger tunes that guy has is enormous.

Which regional fanbase commits more egregious over-rating: LI Billy Joel fans or NJ Bruce Springsteen fans? Start throwing invective at me ... now!

liverpool/roma means that we're guaranteed to have an american-owned team in the ucl final. liverpool are owned by fenway sports group, owners of the red sox, while roma's owner is james pallotta. actually, not just american-owned, but boston-owned. nice.

How about Margaritaville Jimmy Buffett fans?

did some more plumbing around the house today. i changed a ballcock assembly. presented without comment.

The Billy Joel fans have worse musical taste and Bruce fans a suckers for falling for rust belt performance art. Both are insufferable in large doses.

Going to the Marlins-Pirates game tonight. I’m sure it will be an electric atmosphere. Saturday night in Miami. Not much else going on.

I also had some pretty great duck tacos.

Too bad you're wife can't replace the ballcock assembly she married, Rob. No offense.

rob said...

none taken. i’m sure she has similar thoughts.

It wouldn't be so rusty if it got more use. Just sayin.

i can tolerate glass houses, but allentown is just the worst. i think people who really love billy joel are way more insular (and live in glass houses and throw stones) than bruce fans. bruce has a much stronger and much more various catalog. in fact, it's probably hard to over-rate bruce, no matter what you say. perhaps impossible . . . and i might be from jersey

Billy Joel has been playing MSG regularly to rake in cash. You would have to give me free seats in the first ten rows or give me unlimited suite booze to get me there.

I have a longer rant on him that I will turn into a full post after I finish my baseball card series.

I gave up Eagles and Buffett tickets for tonight in Orlando to make this Miami trip. I feel confident I made the right decision.

TR said...

No Felder and Frey = not the Eagles. You made the right choice.

Most popular team gear tonight at Marlins Park.

1. Pirates
2. Hurricanes
3. Marlins

I always thought we needed a stuffed marlin in the pit of Unit M.

I enjoy this Pelicans team. Good name, imo. I LOVED peak Rondo. Jrue Holiday is highly underrated and, somehow, so is Anthony Davis.

the dude would agree, mark.

fuck this weather. my team got heat stroke yesterday (and run off the field by a bunch of skinny track stars) and today it's 40, windy and rainy. my team doesn't play well in extreme cold either. we're a fair weather team . . .

Soft.

rob said...

i'm definitely soft, but our team overcame the pouring ran and 50 degree temps better than the coaches did.
