July Fourth Fillerpalooza Open Thread

Maybe one of you jackalopes has a post coming down the pike, but I saw nothing in drafts, and felt you have been subjected long enough to pics of my Posehn-esque mug long enough, so pull up a stool and down a few cold ones - It's Filler Time.

For the hell of it, I googled "most patriotic thing ever" - a few of my favorite images are posted below. So think of this as a hybrid "ghoogles"/filler post (hashtag postcount, amirite).

See you all in the comments, where I expect to be regaled with fun fourth adventures and hijinks.

Loadin' up the family truckster for some holiday weekend fun.

Please stop doing this to dogs

C'mon, it's Czechoslovakia. We zip in, we pick 'em up, we zip right out again.

And of course no patriotic post would be complete without these two very important music videos:

And finally, in lieu of spending time with a real NBA celebrity this weekend, one who draws fans two decades after his heyday...

...we were around one who was sitting all by his lonesome on a bar patio in front of a crowded bar on a holiday happy hour afternoon.  There is only one Gheorghe Muresan, people.

Two guys I am drinking with went to high school with him. They were sure it was Iverson. I claimed it was not. I was wrong. So weird he was the lonely guy hanging by himself.

Are you sure it wasn't george mikan?

Definitely Iverson. A friend of mine who travels to Atlanta often sees Iverson in the same hotel bar regularly. Allen drinks his fair share.

How can you not love a guy who wears a two tone black shirt/white collar with a red tie and a mohair jacket? If you watch that clip you would think it was a 1978 episode of the Grand Ol' Opry, but it's 1992.

That said, the David Cross takedown of all the flag waving blowhards is awesome.

Gene Ween is playing in Chicago this weekend. I will say for the record that Ween was much greater than the sum of its parts. Splintered Ween bums me out.

We're talking about mattress. We ain't talking about the game. .. We're talking about mattress, man. When you come to the arena, and you see me play, you see me play don't you? You've seen me give everything I've got, right? But we're talking about mattress right now."

Just arrived in Orlando for a resort weekend with the in-laws. No Bizzarro family this time though!

rob said...

hey, dave: it appears the atlantic has been listening to 'the test'. and stealing your shit: http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/07/what-every-american-should-know/397334/

Mark said...

This hotel has a lazy river. I'm already a fan.

rob said...

after closer reading of that story, it might be more accurate to say that dave is stealing e.d. hirsch's gig.

rob said...

serena williams was dead. down 3-0 and two breaks in the third set to england's heather watson, then down 4-5 on watson's serve. and serena won, 7-5. there may not be a mentally tougher athlete in the world right now.

TR said...

My boys are watching Sorcerer's Apprentice after five hours at the beach. It's like Nic Cage turned his Nic Cageness up to 11 for the role. Tremendously awesome.

Dave said...

"the test" is not quite so serious as e.d. hirsch is about this topic . . . we recorded two more episodes, won't be out until after i get home from the cape, but stacey now remembers how long ago the dinosaurs lived because of zman's "69" mnemonic!

Dave said...

actually saw some decent looking women on the beach at the cape . . . unusual . . . but i think they were foreign nannies and not actually wealthy white women.

Dave said...

and i am loving wachussetts"green monster" ipa.

Mark said...

Per usual, I'm on "awful tattoo watch" at this Orlando hotel. Saw some doozies last weekend including a guy with a huge upside cross on his chest (Yay Satan?) and a middle aged man with a tramp stamp.

Glad to hear Serena came back and won. I always root for her but I was rooting a little harder because I wanted her to ruin all those Brit's day. Merica!!

I saw Serena at the 2006 US open vs Hantuchova. Serena was down 3-5 with Hatuchova serving for the first set. Serena won that game and the next three to take the set then she won the next set 6-3. That's 10 out of 13 games. Tough as nails.

zman said...

And I should add that when she broke to bring it to 5-4 in the first it wasike she threw a switch and was unstoppable. You could see Hantuchova wilt after that break. Serena beat her mercilessly, so much so that a woman in the crowd yelled "punish her Serena!" and everyone cheered and laughed. It was a whooping.

Danimal said...

Mark - what resort are you patronizing?

I'm on my lanai (Florida patio) listenin to some Johnny Cash. Waylon on right now singin a Marshal Tucker cover. Drinkin an Intuition People's Pale, after having a Not Your Father's Root Beer.

Mark said...

Hilton Bonnet Creek. It's on the Disney property right near Downtown Disney. Mother in law wanted the childrens to be able to see Disney's 4th of July fireworks.

I find it fairly ridiculous that we drive to Orlando to do these weekends with my in laws since we all live less than a mile from the Atlantic Ocean but I believe in picking my battles as well.

rob said...

my company has held its annual sales meeting at that hotel two of the past three years, mark. that's about all i've got to say about that.

Danimal said...

It's a nice joint. Waldorf there as well, the hotel not the person. Good steakhouse if you're into that sort of thing.

Mark said...

Yes, I noticed the Waldorf was right next door. I've been pleasantly surprised by this place. Good bar, nice pool area and the various restaurants don't look too bad.

Mark said...

My walk around the lobby here revealed another bar. Will have to check that out. The lobby bar featured Bell's Two Hearted on tap.

Rob- I'd have hoped you had, at the very least, some bar experience. You're quite the disappointment.

rob said...

the waldorf bar is nice nice, mark.

Mark said...

Ill be making my way over there one of these nights.

TR said...

At some point, Klinsmann needs to learn what we all know - Jozy is what he is, which means he's an incomplete player who will only tease you with his potential.

TR said...

Wish I was in Chicago at the Dead show. Can't imagine how fun this run will be. Sounds like the only issue was telling Bob Weir to back off vocals.

Set 1:
Box of Rain
Jack Straw
Bertha
Passenger
The Wheel
Crazy Fingers
The Music Never Stopped

rob said...

my boss is at tonight's show. neither he nor jozy altidore will be the top us striker in 2018.

zman said...

Are Dead shows still a thing?

zman said...

I'm all out of whiskey. Tough way to start the 4th.

rob said...

dead shows cease to be a thing after sunday, z. big weekend for 50/60-somethings.

TR said...

You kidding me, Zman!? Trey's on lead, dude.

Mark said...

TR is a Phishhead?? I find that surprising. I'm dismayed by Zman's lack of planning. And I can't get down with these Dead shows. Money grab. I'm sure they're fine if you're super high, and I support that, but otherwise they feel false.

zman said...

Puck phish. I've registered my disgust for them previously.

Yes Mark, poor planning. But only because I've drank way more than I expected in the past two days.

zman said...

Puck = phuck.

Clarence said...

Show was good tonight, I missed Box of Rain which is a top 5er but I caught Playing in the Band and Franklin's. And the most devout of the unwashed may balk at Bob-sung Ripple to close, but I think that's a nice crowd-pleaser.

But the extended set break is a killer.

Murray/Seppi in the fifth set. 1-1, both games won via break. These guys are quite tense.

zman said...

Actually it's only the fourth set. Math.

rob said...

seppi went on a tear after a controversial 'injury' timeout. then murray took one, and hasn't lost a game since.

mr kq said...

No doubt you have X - 4th of July already.

Squeaky said...

Rob, throw some Telekinesis or Men at Work on the play list.

Mr. Truck checkout out Soundtrap.

Did the annual fight of the hoses on Nantucket this morning. Get your head out of the gutter. They park three firetrucks on main street and have huge water fight and then douse people with the fire hoses.

Stay thristy me friends.

rob said...

no doubt, mr kq. i love that tune, too.

Squeaky said...

I'm 4 Tank 7 farmhouse ale's in. Going to be fun day for the wifer.

rob said...

men at work are fucking australian, squeak. try to pay attention here.

rob said...

if you follow me on spotify, you can see the playlist building. just added southernplayalistic... because i needed some rap and some south.

Mark said...

Rob- you should've included 'Presidential' by Youngbloodz. It fits your American theme. Kinda.

Marls said...

America by Neil Diamond. Most people don't know that that song was based on his deep rooted hatred of immigrants.

mr kq said...

Fems - American Music.

rootsminer said...

Just checked your playlist Rob (ironic because I just pissed my wife off a couple of hours ago with an anti-spotify diatribe). I think you still need a bit more southern dirt in there, but I'm spinning it anyhow. The songwriters will be stoked to get that extra $.0000069 they get from it.

mayhugh said...

I might be late to the party but how about Presidents of the United States of America? Kitty? Peaches?

How about some Waylon Jennings "America". Too straightforward?

rob said...

agreed, rootsy. it's a work in progress.

started to add some presidents and couldn't decide which song so i punted.

zman said...

Anything by Bush would cover two presidents. Possibly three depending on Jeb's deal.

mr kq said...

Bush. Get some.

rootsminer said...

City of New Orleans would be a good choice. 'Good Morning America, how are ya?'

rob said...

that's inspired. and a great tune.

rootsminer said...

Indeed. RIP Steve Goodman. Not southern but that song sure is.

Marls said...

Well a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song and told me it was the perfect country and western song.

Marls said...

Hi gheorghies. Half cocked in western Michigan. Murica.

zman said...

Is that a reference to your slender phallus or what happens to you on Felch Street?

Marls said...

C. all of the above.

rob said...

gheorgies, hello. fully cocked in suburbia.

Whitney said...

Better show last night. Opened with Shakedown Street to much approval. Friend of the Devil, Deal, Golden Road, West LA Fadeaway, and the predicted One More Saturday Night and closer U.S. Blues.

Folks coming here again tonight, make it if you can. Still waiting on Estimated Prophet, Sugaree, Samson & Delilah, Throwing Stones.

Whitney said...

And Bruce Hornsby is like a kid in a candy store up there. Seems to be having the time of his life, all smiles. He's either giddy to be closing out the Grateful Dead's 50 years or he's laughing that his dad ordered pizza 7 times in the summer of 1990, each time a $19.70 total, and every time I delivered them to his big fancy Williamsburg house, he handed me a twenty and told me to keep the tip. Hilarious, Bruce. Your dad's a cheap jerk. I had 40's to pay for.

TR said...

Whit - am I wrong or are both Terrapin and Dark Star waiting to be played? Those seem like no brainers.

And I have a Hornsby story I think I've already told. When washing dishes while working at College Delly, Dean would send me in the lot when it was slow to keep folks from using his lot and walking into Paul's. I busted Bruce trying to do that once and he mocked me as he begrudgingly moved his car. I was half-stoned and smoking a ciggie in a tie-dye shirt at the time. Probably didn't impress him too much at that moment.

rob said...

doing a spartan race in a month or so with another dad my age and two of my daughter's gymnastics coaches. the latter two are about 25. worked out with them this morning at the gymnastics gym. those fuckers are comically strong and athletic. me and the other dad nearly puked, while the two young guys jumped over, lifted up, or climbed everything in the fucking place. i'm just going to let them carry me the entire race.

Dave said...

i love that bruce hornsby story and told it to some dead fans the other night.

Whitney said...

TR- I think they are not repeating any songs they played at the Santa Clara shows last weekend. Which annoys me, since I saw the sleepy Saturday show but not the livelier Sunday show which featured a few of my faves. They played Dark Star in SC Saturday. But to my knowledge Terrapin has not been played.

In addition to the endless set breaks, my only other knock is Phil's voice. Worse than ever. They need to let Trey sing any non-Bob songs. Hornsby has been decent as well. Let Phil Not Sing.

rootsminer said...

At the end of one spring semester I went to a wild party in Surrey, and we saw Bruce with his family on the ferry across the James. Some real heady bro went up and asked him if he was going the bash (its name escapes me - Freak Out, perhaps? Anyone remember?). Bruce was annoyed at the interruption and responded with a derisive 'NO'.

Phil's voice was shot 40 years ago. I'm not a fan of Trey's singing either, so I've checked a few clips and some of the chatter, I'm not all that interested in these shows. I've been spinning some vintage GD (with Jerry AND Pigpen), and I read David Browne's "So Many Roads" this weekend. An interesting look into the dead world on and around 10 different dates of importance.

TR said...

I didn't see Bruce at any of the "ounce split" parties either.

rootsminer said...

That's just the way it is. Some things will never change.

TR- I came across a 5/9/77 Buffalo bootleg with your handwriting on the label. I'll let you know how crispy it is when I spin it. Pretty sure Marv Levy sat in on congas and crushed.

Dave said...

my stupid white cousins are going to watch the chatham A's tonight instead of the world cup final. we are about to head over there for dinner and it's going to be tough for me to refrain from judging them, especially because i'm a few beers in. minor league baseball instead of a once in every four year event? they actually watch and play baseball and softball . . . bizarre.

rootsminer said...

stupid white cousins. you should ditch them and get some smart brown cousins who will watch futbol.

Mark said...

As much as I'm not in on these Dead shows I do think its cool that Whitney is there. Especially since my only enemy in the world has suddenly become a "huge Dead fan" in the last couple of years (I suspect he likes the drugs more than the music) and tried like hell to get tickets but couldn't. I feel like Whitney played a part in that. Thanks, pal.

rob said...

we need more information about this enemy. i feel like there's a story in there somewhere.

mayhugh said...

I heard that some fisherman caught a 6 1/2 foot shark yesterday in Kill Devil Hills. And then threw it back because it wasn't big enough to remove under NC regs. Glad my place has a pool.

mayhugh said...

Oh, he was surffishing. Feel like that's an important part of the story.

Mark said...

Surf fishing is so dumb. Fun, but dumb. I did it many times when I was in junior high and high school. Because I was really dumb.

mayhugh said...

This World Cup Final started with a bang, huh?

zman said...

Anyone who lands a 6.5 foot shark whilst casting from the beach deserves respect, no matter how dumb such an endeavor may seem. The real question is how do you throw said creature back from the shoreline? I'm sure "carefully" is part of the answer but there has to be more to it than that.

zman said...

And surf casting is not dumber than blowing your hands apart with firecrackers a la Jason Pierre Paul.

zman said...

Is women's soccer always this high scoring?

mayhugh said...

I saw pictures, basically the guy dragged it by the tail back into the water. Of course, I'm guessing that would have required him to go in the water with the shark. No thank you.
