My House Was Divided

As all of you are aware, I attended and graduated from the University of Florida. As some of you may not know, the entire rest of my family consists of Florida State supporters. Both of my older sisters graduated from FSU. Both of my brothers-in-law attended FSU. And my parents have been FSU season ticket holders since 1988 when my oldest sister enrolled at Florida State. As a result of this, I've attended many, many FSU games during my lifetime. Plenty of memorable ones too. The 'Choke at Doak', the 'Sean Taylor game'. Shit, I was even in attendance when Ty Willingham came into Tallahassee and gave the Noles a beatdown and had irish fans dreaming of National Titles. Plenty of the games I saw were during my early youth but a good number also happened during my time as a student at Florida. See, if Florida was on a bye or playing an away game that didn't conflict with the FSU game that day I'd often go up to Tallahassee for the weekend to visit my family (my oldest sister, her husband and kids live in Tallahassee) and attend the football game. Not because I enjoy hearing the racist FSU war chant 3500 times a night, but because I enjoy high profile college football games (and it's always fun to be in Doak Campbell Stadium when the Seminoles lose). Why am I bringing this up? Well, I'm tired of looking at a shirtless midget every time I log on to G:TB...and because I was in the stadium the last time that FSU took on Clemson in a high profile night game. It didn't start well for Clemson.

That was pretty much all she wrote for Clemson that night. Let's hope tonight's game is more exciting. It's a big (and long) day of college football kids. Hydrate, pace yourselves and meet me in the comments.

did i mention that my team saw a very attractive female runner change her clothes right in front of us at midnight last night? even the women on our team were impressed.

I was not initially a Jeff Driskel believer but I'm on board now. Possibly the most physically gifted starts QB the Gators have ever had.

Mark said...

Starting, not starts.

Mark said...

It's a lot of points to give up (-20) but I'm still taking LSU over Auburn. Because Auburn is god awful this year. Also, will continue to ride UCLA (-7) over the Beavers.

Mark said...

Big day here at G:TB.

Mark said...

Nice call by me on UCLA. Bruins getting smooooked.

rob said...

hi, mark!

T.J. said...

happy birthday, old man clarence

watched my first women's rugby match today. quite entertaining, but i need to figure out these rugby rules

T.J. said...

hi mark!

mayhugh said...

I had a CLE (Zman and Marls speak my language) all day, so just getting back to watch the football. What should I go with primarily? Missou-SC? Miami-Georgia Tech?

Clarence said...

Thanks for the birthday wishes, my friends. This weekend's an all-timer for sure. Springsteen last night was unreal (I think he has a 6th gear for New Jersey), Mets game today, 15 rows behind home plate, R.A. Dickey gets win #19, and now we head to well la-di-da the Hamptons. Marls and his babe are terrific hosts.

Oh, also, I got engaged this morning.

Mark said...

I'd stay away from Tech-Miami. Tech has scored 36 unanswered points. Mizzou-South Carolina and UCLA-Oregon State are on my two TVs.

Mark said...

Hi guys!!

Mark said...

Missouri is getting rolled by South Carolina. And I can't get enough of it.

mayhugh said...

It's hard to hide that SEC pomposity, eh, Mark? I don't blame you. Missou got a nice welcome.

I'm amped up for Michigan-ND.

zman said...

Congrats to Clarence and clarice. Dropping like flies around here.

zman said...

CLE is for suckers. Move to MA.

mayhugh said...

No CLE in MA? VA changed the requirements this year that mandates a certain amount of live CLE. That hurts - spending a Saturday with a bunch of lawyers is not optimal.

zman said...

No CLE in MA. And I'm licensed to ill in all 50 states so no CLE for me generally.

T.J. said...

look at Clarence, mixing a Mets home game with a birthday with an engagement

congrats sir

rob said...

back to my home couch in time for w&m/delaware, lsu/auburn, and notre dame/michigan. all is well.

Danimal said...

Clarence...congrats. And nice work on the engagement too! Someone might get luuuucky tonight!

Had a play date here all day long. Was able to watch almost all of ga tech game....wow. What an ending.

Danimal said...

And am absolutely whipped. I may not see the 2nd half of nd game.

Clarence...where did u hang in the Hamptons?

Danimal said...

Am 1-0 on the day so might as well fuck it up...taking vandy and fsu...and michigan.

T.J. said...

danimal, we both know Denard is gonna drop a massive deuce on ND...
/not a reverse jinx
//well...

mayhugh said...

Delaware is a lot more physical than W&M was prepared for. Tribe might get shut out.

mayhugh said...

Wide open fullback/TE drops the ball. That was a gift.

Danimal said...

My betting against nd has me 1-2 and them 3-0....of course that is why they are 3-0.

Danimal said...

Spond is going to cost nd no less than 2 Td's tonight. He is this year's Gary gray.

Danimal said...

The guy that cost them last years game and at least two others

rob said...

welp, 17-0. not very good.

rob said...

ugh.

on a much more interesting note, taylor heinicke threw for 730 yards and 5 touchdowns for odu today. in one game. 730 yards.

Danimal said...

I think it was "feet". That's a typo.

Danimal said...

Well that was kind of a big play but major concerns with this secondary.

rob said...

terrrrible play call for michigan. moving it at will, then go gimmicky. got what they deserved.

Danimal said...

Our baby just shat up her back. the bonus is she had just fallen asleep.

Danimal said...

Will take it. Brian Kelly is noticeably kinder and gentler on the sidelines these days.

T.J. said...

Denard, you chump

TR said...

Ridiculous slate of games. Can't believe Rutgers may win at Arkansas. And the Yanks-As game was unbelievable. As go up 9-5 in the 13th, but the Yanks tie it up in their last licks, and then win it in the 14th.

Yeah. I was too lazy for the apostrophes.

mayhugh said...

Geoff - you are a 90 yard carry.

T.J. said...

Suck it, Denard. I hope he Delhommes this game

rob said...

the noles are #4? in the nation? i declare that bogus.

Danimal said...

Tommy Touchdown Jesus!

TR said...

Rutgers up 11. Did nut plan on a whopping of the Hogs when this game first came out on the Ruthers schedule.

TR said...

Rutgers up 15!

T.J. said...

Denard, not your night chief

Shlara said...

Mazel Clarence!
And those gold ND helmets are redic

Danimal said...

Have the sinking feeling that Denard is going to pull this one out

T.J. said...

ND kicker, thank you for not shanking that one

Mark said...

I didn't see Rutgers beating Arkansas this summer but it's very easy to believe that could happen tonight based on the past few weeks for the Razorbacks. Not good times.

T.J. said...

Can LSU blow this? Oh my...

Mark said...

Also, good to see that FSU is still FSU.

And Mayhugh, I make very little attempt to hide my SEC pomposity. It's earned so we might as well display it. Also, Mizzou deserves every whipping they get for talking all the shitnthey talked before ever playing a conference game, I mean, you weren't elite in the Big 12. Who the hell do you think you are?

T.J. said...

Good job, good effort, Auburn

Mark said...

I went over to my sister's house for the first half of the FSU game (the rest of the family is at the game) and she was not really enjoying herself.

Mark said...

A reminder: Lane Kiffin pulled Tajh Boyd's scholarship offer even though he was a Vol committ because he didn't fit Kiffin's offense. Kiffin then signed Tyler Bray. Love you, Lane.

T.J. said...

FSU/Clemson about to go HAM again

T.J. said...

Danimal...I don't like this at all

Mark said...

This game is quite entertaining. And I have to agree with Rob. No way FSU is #4 in the country. Not with EJ Manuel at QB.

Mark said...

Between FSU-Clemson in the early parts of the Oregon-Arizona spread option fest, this should be a very fun late Saturday night of football.

Nice throw by Manuel for the TD.

T.J. said...

Nice work, Irish. Now I fully expect a shitty loss to Miami.

T.J. said...

Oh hai K State

Danimal said...

Wagering today = fail.
Wouldnt trade it though. And teej....a little more worried about miami now fer sher.

Mark said...

Not a fine wagering day for me either. Oh well. You can't nail three team parlays every week.

More Sammy Watkins please.

T.J. said...

Oregon is so god damn fun to watch. Of course, I'll be in bed before halftime, but I'll enjoy the Ducks for now.

Clarence said...

Thanks, friends. And Marls is one terrific host. Life is really, really good today. In no small part because I'm blessed with good friends far and near, large and very small. I love you guys, as Norman Dale said. Also, I'm drunk again.

Mark said...

Congrats, Clarence. I'm going to get drunk for you tonight.

Mark said...

Agreed, Teej. Not on the bedtime part (wtf?) but on Oregon. I love D'Anthony Thomas as much as any non Gator in years. So. Damn. Fast.

T.J. said...

Geesh. Clemson wants to lose this thing by 20 now.

Mark said...

I saw James Wilder Jr. play in high school and didn't think he could be a tailback in college. I wasn't alone either. Many thought he'd be made into a LB or DE. It appears I was very wrong.

Mark said...

As I said on Twitter, this is the same Clemson team that gave up 70 to WVU in the Orange Bowl. Not exactly the Steel Curtain.

T.J. said...

The Aluminum Foil Mini-blind?

T.J. said...

Bill Snyder would like Bob Stoops to get the fuck off his lawn

Mark said...

Bill Snyder: Most underrated CFB coach ever?

T.J. said...

We need more Mayhem ads starring Dennis Duffy

T.J. said...

Clemson, way to capitalize on the turnover. That was an awwwwful throw, Mr. Boyd.

Mark said...

Clemson is still Clemson. But, FSU looks better than its looked in close to a decade. They are deep, fast and somewhat well organized and schemed on both sides of the ball. I am in no way pleased with this.

Mark said...

Now that FSU is good again I'm going to start carrying their cotton soft ACC schedule around in my pocket.

Mark said...

Good night. G:TB.

Clarence said...

Good night, Mark. I'm staying up drinking so as to keep this good day going.

Hello, Gheorghies!!

rob said...

fell asleep at 9:15 last night. sort of the bizarro clarence. though that might be redundant.

My cable provider has finally saw fit to provide me with the NFL Network and the Red Zone Channel. Big Sunday at Hughes Manor.

Mark said...

Well hello there, Bengals.

T.J. said...

nice secondary work by Skins on that

Sanchise looking to set a record for most consecutive sub-five yard completions.

rob said...

at my daughter's soccer game. excellent timing.

mayhugh said...

Well hello, Skins. Planning to lay a giant turd today, eh?

rob said...

did vincent jackson get hurt?

mayhugh said...

Bad call by the refs. No Bengal touched Wilson on the fumble recovery.

Dave said...

congrats clarence! i found out the news from my wife, who is in cape may for the weekend . . . meanwhile, you're thirty miles from me getting engaged.

mayhugh said...

Th Washington Redskins: Finding new ways to lose since 1999.

Danimal said...

Jags may beat Indy thx to a 36 yard missed fg by vinatieri....awful wkd of outcome predictions

T.J. said...

points allowed by Washington defense in the first three games of the season: 32, 31, 38 (so far)

mayhugh said...

THIRD AND FORTY FIVE

mayhugh said...

At least I'll be cheered up by the comedic gift that is Kevin Kolb.

Clarence said...

The ending to the last two games equals Strikes 1 and 2 against Mike Shanahan being employed beyond this year. A younger Daniel Snyder would fire him tonight.

mayhugh said...

Let's look on the bright side for a just a second - it's nice to go over 20 points without breaking a sweat.

Saints-KC got exciting...

Danimal said...

Wait til ya see the jags ending. Helllz yeahz.

rob said...

my saints suck worse than the skins. and jamaal charles is on my bench.

Shlara said...

Rob--you know how to pick teams. Please stay far away from my Nationals. Thank you!!

Mark said...

Rob- Vincent Jackson didn't get hurt. He just sucks.

T.J. said...

mayhugh, kevin kolb finds you quite amusing

mayhugh said...

Oh, come on. The Cards are scoring in spite of Kolb, not because of him.

Mark said...

The Red Zone Channel has made my Sunday approximately 3000% more enjoyable.

zman said...

CJ Spiller better be ok. And I have no idea how the 1:00 games panned out so crazily.

zman said...

TJ Yates is in the house omigod danger.

T.J. said...

kevin kolb, 16 of 22 for 215 yards and 2 touchdowns, with zero picks

T.J. said...

this was a damn good sunday for you to finally get the red zone channel on your cable provider

Dave said...

ok, i'm 100 comments late on this, but rob -- you don't post comment #1 without a picture.

rob said...

we were so transfixed as to be immobilized

Mark said...

Indeed, TJ. It was quite an exciting NFL Sunday.

Shlara said...

I'm bitter about the end of that Steelers game.
And now I need the Reds to lose
