A Painful Read

The SportGuy has produced one of the whiniest columns in recent memory, even for him. It's not enough to have your favorite team win, the rest of us have to really get excited with you to validate it? The world doesn't hate the Patriots, as he attests, they're just tired of them winning. It's not exciting. Get over it. Unbelievably annoying piece.

Okay, here's the game: what column will we get out of him on Monday?

- Pats lose, and we are assured to get an "it's about time" article that mentions a whole lot about how many times New England thumped Indy before.

- Pats win, and IF the Saints win we get an article about how the world wants the Saints, including the NFL and the refs, and based on that, the Patriots are the real underdogs despite what we know about the NFC.

- Pats win, Bears win, revenge for 1986, blah blah blah.

Hell, he might as well just write the articles now.

Prediction: (With a tip of the cap to the formerly funny Guy himself, does anyone else say "My prediction?...Pain." any time some asks for a prediction? I did this at work and nobody got it, naturally -- you gotta be prepared to dig yourself out with a digression really quickly. Speaking of digressions...)

Prediction: Indy 24, Pats 20
Prediction: Saints 16, Bears 9 (on a defensive touchdown)
Prediction: My prediction?...Pain.

Try it, it's fun.

Am I crazy in thinking that you could feel the Colts were gonna make it a game inthe 2nd Half? Also, say what you will but I changed my NFC pick based on the same near unaminous opinions you cited. Of course, I didn't expect anything close to what we saw. Oh yeah, I'm drunk.

I still like Simmons' NBA writings... but his football and baseball columns have become almost unbearable.

Get ready for the classiest and most dignified coaching matchup in the history of the Super Bowl.

Golic said the world "class" four times in two sentences discussing Dungy and Lovie this morning.

1-1 in NFL picks sure beats 0-4, but seriously, 3-5 for the college hoops? Nice to see Gary's boys fall to 1-4 in the ACC though...

The Fox pregame show had a piece on Dungy and Lovie, and in the pre-taped intro it opened with "They're two of the classiest guys in pro football..."

I guess that makes the Church's on North Capitol Street the classiest restaurant in DC.

The shine had really come off Gary Williams in the past few years, huh? Its starting to look like that NCAA title was due more to the combined talents of Dixon-Blake-Baxter than any of Williams' nonsensical ranting (and profuse sweating) from here.

I am way more down on Gary and his staff's recruiting skills than his coaching. They won the National Championship and seemed to get zero marquee players out of it. His in-game decisions have usually been sound, his sweaty rants usually have the proper proportional balance between targeting the refs/opponents/others and his players, and he seems to drink like a sailor.

Gary gets a G:TB vote of confidence, but if he can't start recruiting some better talent (this young backcourt appears to be a step in the right direction), that won't be enough.

Good point about the recruiting. A title should've allowed Gary further access to more high profile recruits and less under the radar types like he seemingly had to go with earlier in his Maryland tenure. Surprisingly, the level of recruits may have even gone down in the time since winning it all. Also, is there a reason why he can't seem to get any of the big time Baltimore talent? Syracuse in particular always seems to nab kids from that area.

Long story short: Most of the guys who used to go to College Park are now going to G'town. When we went to see the DeMatha-St. John's game there were four players that clearly stood out from the rest--3 were going to G'Town and the other was going to George Mason. Laranega and Thompson 3 were both at the game...no Gary Williams. He was probably at Dave & Busters doing Chuck Yeager bombs.
