Postcards from Abroad

Rob and I are headed to Wales!

By the time you read this, we will be will on our way to Cardiff... if all has gone well. You never know with air travel. We will be draped in these:

I mean, as national flags go, there are way worse, right?

Here's what else you need to know about Wales:
  • a country that is part of the United Kingdom
  • bordered by the Irish Sea to the north and west
  • bordered by England to the east
  • population: 3.16 million
  • size: 8,000 square miles (roughly the size of New Jersey)
  • Languages: Welsh and English
  • Food: Welsh rarebit, lots of lamb dishes
Famous people from Wales:
  • Richard Burton
  • Dylan Thomas
  • T. E. Lawrence
  • Anthony Hopkins
  • Terry Jones
  • Catherine Zeta-Jones
  • Henry Morton Stanley
  • Christian Bale
  • Laura Ashley
  • Henry (Captain) Morgan
  • Rob Brydon
  • Timothy Dalton
  • Desmond Llewelyn
  • Jonathan Pryce
  • Matthew Rhys
  • Charles Rolls
  • Ian Woosnam
  • Gareth Bale
And, relevantly...
Sir Gareth Owen Edwards CBE (born 12 July 1947) is a Welsh former rugby union player who played scrum-half and has been described by the BBC as "arguably the greatest player ever to don a Welsh jersey". Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen, Swansea, Wales.

Generally speaking: Wales is a poor, coal-mining country, the Welsh loathe the English, and they didn't quite understand why Yanks would bother to come see their rugby team when I was there (2000).

How about music?

  2. I'm mostly Irish but there's a little bit of Welch in there. Would love to visit one day. Likely after I'm done attending volleyball and softball games.

  5. I might add JPR Williams and Phil Bennett. Both of which were involved in the greatest international try of all time. Barbarians v All Blacks (google it’s insane). Scored by your man on list Gareth Edwards. Enjoy lads, doesn’t get any better than Welsh anthem in the Millennium. Will be watching.

  6. I’m not saying todays SEC semifinals are the greatest pair of conference semifinals ever but it’s got to be in the discussion.

  9. The blokes on the commentary suggest that the Welsh have not come on, unless you're deploying some sort of wanking metaphor.

  12. After cursory college hoops research, here goes: I think SEC tournament is first in which all four semifinal teams ranked in top 10; so yeah, maybe best ever in terms of matchups, though No. 4 Gators dusted No. 5 Bama.

1985 Big East tournament: Three ranked in semis. No. 1 Georgetown beat No. 13 Syracuse in one semi. No. 2 St. John's beat unranked Villanova in other semi. No. 1 Hoyas beat No. 2 Johnnies in final. Georgetown, St. John's, Nova all went to Final Four, and Nova beat Hoyas in title game.

1986 Big East tournament: Three ranked in semis. No. 5 St. John's beat unranked Nova, No. 8 Syracuse beat No. 14 Georgetown. Johnnies beat 'Cuse in final.

1974 ACC tournament: Three ranked in semis. No. 1 NC State beat unranked Virginia, No. 4 Maryland beat No. 6 Carolina. No. 1 State beat Maryland 103-100 in OT in what many regard as greatest ACC game ever and some say best college game ever. Pre-expanded NCAA Tournament era, so only NC State went to NCAAs. That game pushed NCAA to expand field to include multiple teams from same conference. State went on to beat seven-time defending champ UCLA in overtime in national semis, then won title against Marquette.

  13. I dare say that some of those teams in older conferences semis might have been better ranked in this day and age. The amount of subjectivity in the old polls was crazy. SEC rankings this year are deserved, but are definitely supported by analytics vs coaches voting for names just because.
