All the Trimmings

One of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions actually takes place on the Friday that follows it every year. I load up a couple of pieces of sturdy rustic bread with leftover turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, creamed onions and smash it all together for a killer sandwich. That mishmash of flavors is a decent metaphor for a blend of entertainment fun on offer this Friday.

Bzermilkitokolok and the Knowheremen
Starting on November 25, Disney+ will begin streaming The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which features Bzermilkitokolok and the Knowheremen. GotG is a guilty pleasure of mine, as is most of the Marvel cinematic universe. The fact that director James Gunn got to do a holiday special with Quill, Groot, Drax, Mantis, Rocket, and Nebula is weird enough; that he decided to add Old 97s to the mix reaches fever dream territory.

As 97s guitarist Ken Bethea explains in this terrific first-person retelling in D Magazine (the D is for Dallas), Gunn is a huge and long-time fan of the band. It was his idea to bring them to the party (and to name their alter-egos the aforementioned Bzermilkitokolok and the Knowheremen). The band plays two songs in the special, one of which sees them fronted by Kevin Bacon, who I assume plays himself. It's a zany universe.

Here's the trailer:

As a warmup for the GotG special, the USMNT take on a formidable England side at 2:00 ET. I encourage you to head to your local to watch with a likeminded crowd of patriots. Soccer in a bar is much fun. Even Whitney, who's mostly ambivalent about the game, enjoyed watching the 2022 Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid in a crowded pub.

England smoked Iran, 6-2, in their opener, while Team USA outplayed Wales but walked away with a 1-1 draw. A loss to the Three Lions doesn't doom our guys, but it makes their third match against Iran even more of a crucible than the World Cup already is, especially if Wales beats Team Melli as expected. Our fate with a loss and a Wales win would be out of our hands - we'd need to beat Iran and hope England beat Wales and pray that our goal differential was better than that of the Welsh. It'd be excellent, if probably unlikely, if we could at least nick a draw against the English.

And finally, while we're letting all of those entertainment flavors marinate, here's Andrew Zimmern's favorite way to use leftover turkey.

Florida also plays FSU in Tallahassee on Friday night. More than a little bit nervous about that one.

I have few food prep responsibilities this year, so will unfortunately not have all of the leftovers. Fairly good chance that I'm doing a Thanksgiving meal again for our household soon.

I've been working out my ways to follow the futbol when I'm at work or doing stuff. Radio simulcast of the Fox feed is suboptimal. Peacock spanish language broadcast is fantastic, even without the pictures.

I am not generally a big turkey fan. I do enjoy a turkey sandwich or two post Thanksgiving. That won't happen this year. Most of my family is in Tallahassee so they'll only 6-7 of us celebrating at my in-laws. With that in mind, we opted out of turkey. Going with King Crab, stuffed clams, meatballs and the usual Thanksgiving sides. I am NOT mad at this.

Mark’s feast sounds awesome.

Dave - what color people’s food is your favorite?

This is related to the previous post. First, I greatly enjoyed Dave's podcast. Informative, entertaining, heartfelt, well delivered. It's almost as if he speaks publicly for a living.

Second, I'm glad you liked the Cosby books. I hate recommending anything -- food, music, movies, books -- that draws a 'meh.'

I eagerly await your podcast episode with Marls as guest, and the verbal piefight that ensues when you debate politics, teachers' unions and pizza.

Speaking of pizza, we just bought a pizza oven for our pool patio area. Having that and the green egg and Blackstone griddle all built into an outdoor kitchen as our Xmas present to ourselves. I may never leave the house at this point.

So does Wales soiling themselves against Iran make our chances to advance better or worse?

I know less than zero about this stuff, but Wales sucking at soccer reminds me of talking to a couple of Welshmen in a dingy Cardiff pub called the Green Parrot many years ago. When football was mentioned, they scoffed and said, “Feck football, it’s an English sport. Real Welsh play rugby.” Well then. Not surprising in that light.

wales’ loss means we have more control over our destiny. even if we lose to england, a win over iran should be enough to see us through. two big caveats there: that assumes a) we don’t get smashed by england and b) wales don’t beat an england side that would have nothing to play for having clinched advancement.

whew. we just got three TVs streaming the game . . . having a bunch of people over, children and adults. i made chili. hopefully, it won't get out of hand too quickly (and I love an excuse to start drinking at noon, and then kick everyone out of my house at four-- brilliant timing).

I’ll take that result. A little more stressful than I would’ve preferred towards the end. Especially considering it’s my sports stress appetizer for the day.

my british friend adrian brought some very good neutral scotch, which eased a lot of the tension-- the five brits mixed in among all the Americans really changed the whole feel of things, I think it's a good metaphor for the whole democrat/republican polarization madness . . .

Let’s go Gators

got to watch that game in a bar with my family. that was cool. we went toe to toe with one of the world’s best teams and held our own. england were poor, and it’s inexplicable that phil foden never got in for them, but our guys were really solid. some worries about how we’re gonna score goals against an iran team that just needs a tie, if i’m being honest.

a moment of amusement: as we sat at the bar, a male employee was loudly explaining footy to a couple of young female colleagues. as my 18 year-old rolled her eyes hard enough to sprain them, he said, ‘i’m from the east coast, where soccer is bigger than here.’ when asked where he was from, he replied ‘ohio’, at which point my kid audibly guffawed.

Tough night for UNC sports. Rob weeps for them.

To be fair to that guy, Ohio is kinda the home office of US soccer. On the other hand, Ohio is not the east coast. Maybe the east coast of flyover country.

zman said...

If Notre Dame and Pitt can be in the ACC, Ohio can be on the east coast. Maybe that was his logic.

seeing some online smoke about colorado offering the head football job to deion. not sure if there’s any fire there, nor why he’d contemplate taking that job, but it’d offer some spice to my kid’s last three years in boulder.

didn’t see that coming, nor did i foresee a michigan beatdown of the bucks in the shoe.

Gamecocks have had a hell of a season. Couple of big wins. And I’ve been ringside for one and at a fun loving bar for the other.

me, i’m “enjoying” the worst power 5 team in america, who trail utah, 42-0, at halftime.

Fun weekend of rivalry games. I had to watch Florida lose a very winnable game all by my lonesome last night which was suboptimal. Hated losing but I’m encouraged by the future of the program. Dabo and Ohio State taking Ls today raised my spirits. Fuck him and that fanbase.

Got to watch South Carolina top Clemson against stiff odds whilst sipping suds among friends and daughters in my favorite watering hole. Then went and saw hometown band Waxing Poetics in a Va Beach bar. It was a good day. Cheers, gheorghies.

bama beats carolina in four overtimes. tough sports weekend for the heels. you hate to see it.
