Mr. Astley... the Other One

So, everybody, even the younger generation, knows about Rick Astley. I do not care for his music.

But what about Jon Astley?? Here's betting that less than 1% of Gen Z knows about him.

To any of you 80's music simpletons, here's a reminder. A one-hitter classic from 1987.

A ridiculous video for sure, but Jon Astley was also a producer and a master of mastering and remastering. He worked with The Who (even producing a couple of their albums), the Stones, and hundreds of others. He was a whole lot better at that stuff than the whole being a pop star thing. But he had his one moment in the MTV sun.

And I do like the song. More than I should.

And you where you might have also heard "Jane's Getting Serious"? This commercial from the same year the tune came out.

A ridiculous ad for sure, but it does make me want to grab a frank for lunch. And that particular actor, who's now reportedly worth $85 million, was in some other fine fare...

Nice to see Aguado from Ace Ventura getting some work.

And here's another 80's ad... with another friend.

But does it compare to this?

Alrighty. Your time has been sufficiently wasted in the very vein that this blog was built on, Teej-style. Now back to something with some actual merit. Who's up? Maybe something a little more serious.

I could get serious, too. I could get so serious. And I cannot believe that I would ever admit that I could take Jane seriously. Come around eleven, we're still on our way home, all dressed up and nowhere to go, but all along I should have really known that Jane's getting serious (Jane). Jane's getting serious. Jane's getting serious (Jane). And I could get serious, too.

True story. Today I sent a meeting request out to one dude in another organization. I simply put our names in the title of the meeting request. I erroneously left out the “n” in my first name. He’s African-American. He declined the invite. Said he wasn’t sure what happened. I wish I knew him better so he would have instead ragged on my dumb ass like Johnny G would’ve.

GTFOH, Whitey!

There's a little unincorporated speed trap town just south of Roanoke called Boone's Mill. A local huckster/ race car guy there named Whitey Taylor has turned an old church into the Tr*mp Store, with a 20 foot cutout of the former guy on the side of the building to look over the garish red and white wares. I can understand a brother's trepidation.

Just walked out of Tortugas’ lie. Life is still pretty good.

Is Boone’s Mill close to Boone’s farm?

gheorghies, hello! i love that song, though it’s a bit sobering. jon, like most of us in our twenties, had a girl he loved and wasn’t mature enough to admit it. jane’s the one that got away.

Rob was up kinda late. I guess the empty nest gets wild on Tuesdays.

Boone's Mill is more of a corn liquor and rebel flag type of town.

I’ve driven through Boones Mill on the way to the Harvester Performance Center in Rocky Mount!

If you're ever traveling that way again, it's a good idea to heed David Via's word of warning about Boones Mill.

This Saturday is the New York Mets' Old Timers Day, and they have lots of "old timers" showing up... including multiple former Mets who are 15 years younger than I am.

Sigh...

At least you’re amongst the youngest people on earth named Whitey!

True fact

I'd like to issue a sincere apology to the people of Boones Mill for putting an apostrophe in their town name. Their town champions bad grammar and avoids using punctuation of any kind.

Marls said...

Rootsy - while the denizens of Boones Mill may be in favor of insurrection, the lack of an apostrophe is for legal reasons. Thanks to the US Board of Geographic Names, only 5 places in the US are permitted the use of the apostrophe.

Per Wikipedia:

Since 1890, only five exceptions have been granted to the no-apostrophe rule:

— Martha’s Vineyard in 1933, after an extensive local campaign;

— Ike’s Point in New Jersey in 1944 because the name “would be unrecognizable otherwise”;

— John E’s Pond in Rhode Island in 1963 to prevent it from being mispronounced as John “Ess” Pond;

— Carlos Elmer’s Joshua View in Arizona in 1995 to keep the reference to a Joshua tree forest in Mohave County from sounding like three first names in a row;

— and Clark’s Mountain in Oregon in 2002 to accentuate the tribute to William Clark of Lewis and Clark fame.

It’s why Marl’s doesn’t apostrophesize his name

rootsminer said...

I don't think the denizens of that town will make the effort to be the sixth exception.

My bass player rehearses with another group at a member's house in Boones Mill. They have some Latin and Black guys in the band. About a year ago, one of the latino members got turned around and briefly turned into the wrong driveway, then reversed out and turned into the correct drive. Turns out, the aggrieved neighbor is a Roanoke City cop, and was beginning to mete out some BoonesMillJustice(TM) before the band mates heard a commotion and intervened.

This apostrophe conversation was veering dangerously far into typical W&M territory until rootsy reversed it with that Buford T. Justice story.

Ummm… Dave Grohl is immensely popular and needs no detailed explanation of who he is, I get that. But Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Rush need descriptors “Canadian rock band”?
