Surprise Filler

I realize you're eagerly awaiting Day 12, whether you should be or not.  You could be basking in the glow of your team's national championship, or wallowing in the depths of despair after your school . . . bungled a 4th quarter drive to miss out on the FCS playoffs entirely. (Or lost last night after being utterly stymied on offense.)

You could be watching film and television, but these days the current trend is to take every lead character you've been excitedly following for years, if not decades, and either murder them off or ruin their lives beyond recognition. (Happened again this week.) What gives?

Eh. I guess that's life as well.

Anywho, one pleasant surprise was that neither my favorite weekly TV host nor his show was cancelled, and he even awoke from his annual January slumber to record an 8-minute piece in front of a life audience that could only be classified as pure dipshittery. So let's have a look.

For the record, I never read this book. I didn't see the movies. But I still found this silly and amusing.

Enjoy, and see you on Day 12.

john oliver is gold. relatedly, he appears annually around the holidays on the ‘men in blazers’ show to talk about his beloved liverpool. it’s reliably hilarious. here’s this year’s episode: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qAyIStLPxPM

Something else to watch: Wilco being inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame, alongside Lucinda Williams and Alejandro Escovedo.

Rosanne Cash speechifies splendidly on behalf of Wilco, and there's plenty of music performed. The finale is "California Stars" with all of the above on-stage plus Jason Isbell (dueling with Nels Cline, awesome), Margo Price, pedal steel legend Lloyd Maines, and Japanese Breakfast frontwoman Michelle Zauner (who nails the Wilco tune "Jesus, Etc." earlier). Fun all the way through. PBS rules.

Just learned that there's and Indiana pol with my name who has some misgivings about impugning nazis or slavery. That guy can fuck all the way off with that name.

Thanks for the birthday wishes you guys!
I appreciate all of you, even thought I'm not very vocal on the blog these days

Top 10 local ad of all time.

rootsminer said...

I didn't realize that was a local ad. They showed it to the bumpkins of western VA as well.

What else is on that list?

Phil Rizzuto for the Money Store?
Tom Carvel and his gurgling voice?
Anything involving Crazy Eddie?
The Jordan’s Furniture guys?
Call Paul’s Boutique and ask for Janice?

zman said...

And Tommy’s Tunes.

Easterns Motors

Whitney said...

Alas, Paul's Boutique was fictional. Eastern Motors is a good one for DC.

Dave once had a music video for a great song of his that used Crazy Eddie footage. Lost in the ether, I fear...

Neil Young is married to Daryl Hannah?? That's who Crosby talked shit about? Where the hell have I been?? Sheesh.

i remember getting to the end of the da vinci code and being like-- apple? that's the puzzle? brilliant bit. i thought he might link it to today's conspiratorial thinking.

zman said...

We showed Splash to our kids and they liked it. Peak Daryl Hannah. They also liked The Princess Bride, which we watched over Gheorghemas break. Robin Wright and Daryl Hannah look alike. I told zson that before he marries a woman he should make sure she likes The Princess Bride and if she doesn't he should walk away.

Zman, that's some top level parental advice.

Re: The Princess Bride - it's an excellent choice to play for a van load of middle schoolers. The narration plays much like an audio book, so you don't have to be grumpy about being left out of the fun.

Wow, Dan Shaughnessy only voted for one player on his HoF ballot. It was neither Bonds nor Clemens. It certainly wasn't David Ortiz, one of the brightest stars on his local beat in '04 and beyond. Saw that one coming, since his most famous quote about Ortiz was labeling him a "sack of you-know-what."

Not Manny, either. And not Helton or Andruw Jones or Rolen.

Nope. Jeff Kent. Huh. Interesting, I guess. Pop a wheelie, boys.

Hey Mark, savvy hoops head that you are, curious about your thoughts on Ja Morant. Obviously, kid is terrific, but did you think he'd be this impactful this quickly? We're you on him immediately? I'll hang up and listen.

Wish I knew how to embed this, but a link will have to do.

Bob Saget grew up in my town! I had no idea. Here he is extolling our area's virtues!

Bless you, buddy. Gone too soon.

Happy belated, Shlara.
Hope y’all are doing well and staying well with the crazy covid numbers.
“Princess Bride” is a household fav around here—still gets viewed on roadtrip travels often. I think we can all recite it.
I’ve had the hardest 5 days of my life in the work I do, and it’s not over (an infant of one of our family’s has died). Hug your loved ones/be grateful for all that’s good in your lives, and thanks for being a place I can try to be distracted at least a couple minutes - truly, I mean it!

Dave- I was in on Ja quickly in college. A unique combination of athleticism and feel for the game. He understands pace. It shows up most in his passing (especially his lobs in traffic) and his hesitations in the lane where he freezes defenders and finishes in a variety of ways. That said, I didn’t see him developing into this kind of finisher this quickly or developing his 3 point shot as a weapon so soon. I definitely thought he’d be an All-Star. Not sure I saw best player on a championship team as a possibility. We’re not too far from that being a real conversation.

Also, that’s not just because of him. The Grizzlies are absolutely loaded with young talent.

Mark - After watching SGA last night closely for the first time, I believe your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th sentence apply to him. Dude is a BALLER

Donna, so sorry to hear it. That would be my ultimate kryptonite and destroy my everything. Hugs your way, and we’re here for you. Now back to our regularly scheduled dipshittery.

Danimal said...

I am sorry to hear that Donna - cannot imagine. We'll be offering our virtual support from here for what that is worth.

Shlara - happy belated!

Princess Bride was a holiday movie for our fam as well. We did Splash this past summer - it was probably a bit too soon for my then 8 and 10 year old girls to view.

No, but he's trending and quickly. He's def stronger than me tho but that is no big feat. I have not made him aware of that fact.

You dudes need to get make some gainz. My boys are the same height and weight now (5'10", 125 lbs), but with pretty different body types. The older one is all legs, while his little brother has the broad shouldered, inverse triangle shape. Younger one is on a quest to beef up his calves, and I had to admit to him the other day that it was working. He was pretty stoked.
