Ghosts in the Machine

Because The Police were my favorite band as a kid - kinda my gateway into alternative rock - and because Ken brought them up last night, and because some of us (meaning all of you with the exception of TR) really need to work on posting content to this paragon of internetting, here's my top 5, in no particular order (note that this is a damn near impossible mission for me, as I love so very many of their songs):

I'll do this again this afternoon. I'm sure you'll see five different songs.

How good were the Police?

5 proper albums, all of them worthy, a la The Smiths, VU, and of course The Clash. Amazingly, I can name a 5er I love even excluding the ones mentioned by Rob and TR's gem-laden selection.

Bring On the Night
Invisible Sun
Does Everyone Stare/No Time This Time
Hole In My Life
De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da

The second sides of Police albums were sneaky great. I could listen to the latter halves of the first 4 records all afternoon. They finally just went ahead put all the hits on Side 2 of Synchronicity.

I put Darkness on a Spotify playlist I've been queueing a lot. Throwaway tune and yet I dig it.

Good stuff.

The phrase “gem laden” is not used enough with references to me.

The Samples had a little bit of Police in them. And a whole lot of heroin.

Whitney said...

You hear "scrotazzled" more with you than "gem-laden," TR, but that sampling you offered was gem-laden. Canary in a Coalmine and Man in a Suitcase were nice ones.

The B-side Canary in a Suitcase is oft-overlooked.

coleen rooney is a fucking legend.

tribe picked to finish 7th in the caa in the preseason media poll. that's two spots too high. nathan knight picked first team preseason all-caa. that's more accurate.

flying to spain in two days time. one of you needs to pick up the rugby world cup beat. and/or the filler beat. or perhaps the tiger beat.

Whitney said...

We got the beat, Rob, and the beat goes on. Beat it.

Pretty clutch performance on the mound by Braves pitcher Mike Foltynewicz: 1/3 IP, 3 H, 3 BB.

Brutal for an Atlanta fan to arrive in the middle of the 1st and see their team already down 10-0.

oooh--I like this game Rob!
I owned every Police album and played them all the time in the 80s.

Is anyone going to put Mother on their top 5?
Not me.

Here's mine: So Lonely, King of Pain, Canary in a Coal Mine, Invisible Sun, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic

Basically, the Vampire Weekend inspiration set

I went to bed at 930 last night. Missed all the late night baseball fun, but got eight hours of sleep on a Wed night. It was pretty glorious.

so matt lauer is a garbage human

Mark said...

Thanks, Whit!

The Maradona doc on HBO is fantastic. The amount of footage they have of him in action is awesome. His ballhandling was otherworldly.

Correcting Rob’s comment:

“so matt lauer, andrew lack and noah oppenheim are garbage humans.”

They squashed Farrow’s Weinstein article, they knew Lauer was a predator, and they tried to whitewash the situation when they fired Lauer. They need to go too.

FYI - Farrow is only 31. His ability to get this story sourced is unbelievable. Weinstein was such a powerful asshole. I pre-ordered the book for my wife, who will devour it in a day.

And there’s a 0% chance that Woody is his biological father.

true that, tr. i was reacting to the letter lauer released smearing the young woman he very likely raped. what an egregiously appalling predatory fuckface.

Headed to the NYC for work tomorrow - Wednesday. It's been ages since I've been up there, and who knows how much free time I'll have, but I know this crew has city recommendations for me...

TR knows some Times Square booths you gotta check out.

This is cool. That it undoubtedly gives Dan Snyder constipation makes it cooler.
