City of Champions

First the Capitals (well, really, first the Kastles, who've won six World Tennis Tour titles since 2008) captivated the National Capital region, and now the Washington Mystics have brought a title to the DMV. G:TB fave Elena Delle Donne scored 21 despite three injured discs in her back, and WNBA Finals series MVP Emma Meesseman scored 22 as the Mystics defeated the Connecticut Sun, 89-78, to win the fifth and deciding game of the series.

The Washington Nationals kick off their very first NLCS this evening. DC United travels to Toronto to play a first-round MLS playoff match next week. The Washington NFL franchise...well, they will likely still exist for a while.

F the Washington NFL franchise. Last night a dyed in the wool fan revealed to me his plan to defect and become a Buffalo Bills fan. I laughed but listen to his beer-soaked logic, and it was undeniable. Plus, Zman.

Greetings from an Amtrak train on the way to NYC, where I will arrive and immediately get a New York slice at my favorite New York pizza joint... Sbarro

Teejus, enjoy the big city. My two favorite dive haunts are the White Horse in Greenwich Village and Doc Holliday’s in the East Village.

waiiiit a minute. i, too, am on an amtrak train bound for nyc, though i will be disembarking in at the newark airport. what train are you on, teejus?

Speaking of DC, I looked up the schedule for the NLCS earlier today because I was toying with the idea of surprising my Dad and flying up for a game. Alas, all the games in DC are during the week. Bummer. Would’ve been cool to see the Cardinals play a playoff game with my old man.

what’s the optimal amount of drunk to achieve before boarding a flight to europe? asking for a friend and his wife.

this is it. my blogging magnum opus. it's not pretty, i'm afraid . . .

i laugher, i sorta cried. dave is a good man, loved by a good woman. he’s kind of a dope, too.

i hope the optimal amount of drunk is three beers.

Double-edged sword, Rob. Helps you sleep, but accentuates the dehydration. Drink your water, take your Advil and get your sleep.

Stiff liquor drink + an edible is a great combination for my long sleepy flights.

We hit the Massachusetts dispensary pretty hard last week. Shatter, pre rolls, edibles. Too hard in fact. Ended throwing out a couple pre rolls and a little shatter before we came back from Vermont. Knocked back a fair share of edibles in the parking garage at Logan. Still had to discard more than I would’ve cared to. That flight back to Orlando was easy though.

Who’s the old cat in the MLB network studio with the man-bun Mohawk?

I’m not quite sure how CBS didn’t pick up Florida-LSU as the primary SEC game this weekend. I’m a little salty about it. Playing LSU on the road the week after Auburn is tough enough. 8 pm in Death Valley is the highest of bars.

I don’t expect Florida to win. We make it a game and I’ll be proud and confident enough that a loss in Baton Rouge may not ultimately matter.

Mark said...

I think it’s Eric Byrnes, Whit. Premature balding has probably saved me from being a man bun guy.

Hi Gheorghies. Wife and I thoroughly enjoyed El Camino tonight. A very fun way to return to that world.

Mark said...

I’m saving El Camino for Sunday night. Can’t wait! Enthusiasm adjusted accordingly for a short, white, middle class Bart Scott.

Dave said...

el camino is good. the whole family enjoyed it. just the right amount of cameos . . .

My younger guy has been growing his hair out for a year to have it look like John Wick’s hair. It looked bad-ass. He’s been begging to get it cut in a big way for a month. We are doing it now and it’s killing me.

preparing to drink wine, eat jamon, and watch the spanish national team play norway. may or may not pass out from exhaustion.

TR said...

Jamon iberico is one of the Spaniards’ great culinary offerings. Eat up, Rob, and wash it down with some Rioja.

Mark said...

Down goes Georgia! Holy shit that was fun.

zman said...

I would not overlook the joys of mahon and manchego cheese.

Mark said...

Having to wait all day for Florida games always kills me. Even more so for big games. Tonight’s game being at 8 instead of 7 makes it that much worse.

Mark said...

I have the nerves. ALL the nerves.

Mark said...

I’m not sure I can take another couple hours of this game...

Mark said...

Fuck. That pick in the end zone tipped the scales. Florida played admirably without a couple of their best players. Still...fuck.

usa fall to tonga, 31-19, to finish their world cup with no wins and no points. suboptimal.

My 95 lb 6th grader is starting his football game soon. The team he is playing didn’t have enough kids for separate 6th and 7th grade teams. They got a waiver to have seven 7th graders play down w/ the 6th grade. They are forfeiting the season, but playing out the schedule. That’s all well and good except they have a 217 lb kid and a 213 lb kid. No bueno, especially given youth football’s alleged commitment to safety.

japan beat scotland to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time ever. they play south africa, and the japanese ascent means that ireland/new zealand, which might've been one hell of a final, will be played in the quarters. fun!

mr kq said...

The Japan game was incredible. They’ve beaten Ire and Scot, two tier one teams. They have arrived. Not many years ago the USA used to drub them. The difference? Huge corporations are behind each team in their professional league. A true success story.

zman said...

What town are you playing? Who weighs 200 lbs in seventh grade? Other than Derrick Henry and Andy Reid.

Dave said...

my 96 lb freshman son is in a sling with a fractured elbow from getting killed in a jv soccer game. the moral here is you gotta hit the weight room. but 95 pounds in sixth grade is pretty big.

Mark said...

My thoughts when I read TR’s comment was “why is there no weight limit imposed on the waiver for 7th graders”? As well as “who the hell weighs two bills in middle school?”.

As for the need to hit the weight room as a young athlete...absolutely true. But you can’t beat genetics as a teen. I lifted from a pretty early age and was relatively strong. I was still 155 lbs soaking wet as a high school senior.

Mark said...

Also, the Bucs should just cut Jameis during the transatlantic flight. Fuck that guy on every level.

TR said...

95 lbs is small for a 6th grade football. We have 4 kids over 140 lbs.

My kid’s team won 21-6. Other team had beef, but no depth.

rob said...

i have depth, but no beef

Jets are showing flickers of competence. I am flummoxed.

Mark said...

I don’t think the Cowboys are good but I did assume they’d handle the Jets with relative ease. The late afternoon NFL games are consistently boring/shitty.

zman said...

Darnold’s spleen will pop soon and they’ll be the Same Old Jets again.

TR said...

No catheter for my surgery. Bummer.

rootsminer said...

That's bad, TR?

I was at the gym a little bit ago, this time with my shitty "square pods", but listening to podcasts so the house music was still audible. Pretty fucking funny to see a hardcore gym bro, his beats on, air drumming and INTO IT while Wilson Phillips 'Hold On' is softly playing above.

my boys and i love the wu tang, of course-- we're a wu tang household-- but it's an undertaking to watch the new hulu show "wu tang: an american saga" and keep all 9 members of the clan straight, and the actors that play the 9 members, and the young versions and the versions we know now (the wu tang are all my age or older!) . . . it's like 36 chambers of wu tang iterations . . . all that considered, we're three episodes in and enjoying the show and think we've figured out who is wu, for the most part.
