Biggie, Lemmy, Whitney, & the Doobies

It's that special time of year again, and it seems to come earlier each year. Not Halloween. Not Thanksgiving. Not even Christmas, even as there are holidays-themed ads popping up here and there already. It's Rock Hall time!

I could offer something purportedly pithy, but I won't. The quick and dirty:
  • Pat Benatar
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Depeche Mode
  • The Doobie Brothers
  • Whitney Houston
  • Judas Priest
  • Kraftwerk
  • MC5
  • Motörhead
  • Nine Inch Nails
  • The Notorious B.I.G.
  • Rufus featuring Chaka Khan
  • Todd Rundgren
  • Soundgarden
  • T. Rex
  • Thin Lizzy
Some familiar faces in the crowd of 16 nominees, and a handful of new entries. Christopher Wallace and Patricia Andrzejewski, aka Biggie Smalls and Pat Benatar, both get their first nods together, which is fitting in some way I haven't come up with yet. (Something about "best shot" seemed inappropriate.)

DM and NIN are back on the ballot, while Devo and Rage fell off.

LL gets the Gas Face. Again.

Kraftwerk is like Jack Morris... in no way whatsoever, except appearing on the Hall of Fame ballot for a long time without entry. Maybe they will follow his lead.

Personally, I would go with Whitney (natch), Depeche Mode, the Doobies, Priest, Biggie, Soundgarden, and maybe even DMB. But I don't get a vote... beyond the Fan Vote, which I encourage you to exercise. Once again, here's the snubbees.

As always, I have made my predictions. Last year I was mostly on, so here we go.

In the meantime, tune into the Les Coole 2020 Nominee Sampler:

Doesn't Pat Benatar seem like exactly the type of act that would get in?

Happy 82nd Birthday to Linda Lavin, W&M '59. You loved her as Alice in the sitcom version.

It's also the 66th birthday of "Pass the Tissues" Tito Jackson.

Z, you might be right after all. I thought her discography would be a fair bit slight for the Hall. Upon further review, there are the hits we all know:

Heartbreaker
I Need a Lover (Cougar cover)
You Better Run
Hit Me with Your Best Shot
Hell Is for Children
Love Is a Battlefield
We Belong

Plus ones most should know:

We Live for Love
Treat Me Right
Fire and Ice
Shadows of the Night
Little Too Late
Sex as a Weapon

Now that we have moved from the era of Elvis and the Beatles through the Eltons and Springsteens and then the U2s and Madonnas and then the Beasties and GnR's and now even the Zombies and Hall & Oates and Joan Jett... yeah, I can see it.

Plus, she is nominated with her husband Neil Giraldo. That brings in his work on her music plus the fact that he played guitar, wrote and produced for Rick Springfield. He played with Rick Derrringer (but not Rick Derris). He also played guitar on the Kenny Loggins/Steve Perry song Don’t Fight It as used in Yacht Rock episode 4 in phase 3 of Steve Porcaro’s plan to align his root chakra with That of Rosanna Arquette.

They should be in.

I don't know if that's how it works, but if they count "Don't Fight It" they're very in.

Similarly, I don't think Vince Clarke's work with Yaz (Yazoo) or Erasure count towards Depeche Mode's eligibility.

I watch very little baseball and even less AL baseball. folding laundry and watching baseball. So the Encarnacion parrot pose on a HR trot is a thing?

He’s not Jeffrey Leonard. One. Flap. Down.
God, I hated that guy.

TR said...

It’s a real thing, Mark. I wish I saw that trot a bit more this year. Most of his HRs were with Seattle.

I know Mark is a Cards guy, but it’s a lot of fun to watch DC go nuts for the Nats and revel in this success.

It’s even more fun to know this shit makes Daniel Snyder soil himself with insane, baffled jealousy.

buenos dias, jhorghes! on a bus from seville to granada, traveling through andalusia. yes, i *do* have the clash song in my head. i’ve eaten more pulpo and jamon than is probably healthy for me.

Whitney said...

hola, robert. Too much pulpo and jamon creates Spanish Bombs in Andalusia.

David Byrne playing in NYC the day after the Cult-fest in Montclair. Tempted to pull an all-time double-dipper.

Just happened to see an ad for the countdown clock (xmasclock.com) and waited 10 mins to post this:

69 days 6 hours 69 mins 69 seconds until Christmas!

Spread some joy

Also, technical delays thwarted that from being seamless. #$%&!

Penn Station sushi seems like a horrendous idea

All the cool kids party at Kabooz’s Bar & Grill at Penn.

The underground raw bar at Penn (Tracks) recently closed. Twas a shame. One of the best bum-viewing spots in all of Manhattan.

TR likes it raw.

hola, jhorghes! granada is far more hilly than seville. no pulpo today, but lots of vermouth, cerveza, and flamenco. i was quite surprised at how much i enjoyed the latter. my technique is pretty good, they say.
